Mark Millar Shares His Thoughts On The Avengers And "Saturation" Of CBM's!

In a recent interview, the acclaimed comic book writer brings up some interesting points about how The Avengers might result in the failure of future comic book movies...

On Why He Think That Studios Will Continue Making Comic Book Movies:

"The movies are making more and more money. Dark Knight made more than twice what Batman Begins made, and Dark Knight Rises is on track to make over a billion dollars as well, I’d imagine. So they’ll keep making them as long as they keep making money."

On When And Why He Thinks The Comic Book Movie Trend Will Start To Fade:

"I’ve always said 2015 is when it’ll start to fizzle out, because the biggest ones are yet to come. Next year you have all the Marvel franchises coming together in one movie, called The Avengers, and it’s directed by a great guy, Joss Whedon. You’re going to have Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, all in one film."

On Why The Avengers Might Effect Future Movie Adaptations:

"Where I think it’s going to be difficult is once you’ve done that thing of putting all those characters in one film...you know, it’s like having Harry Potter, James Bond and Spider-Man all in one movie. I think what’ll be difficult then is to try and top that because people want to see it get bigger."

"So I anticipate things starting to slow down round about 2014 and 2015. I think that’s when it will really start to flat line a bit and we’re going to see our first failures."

What do you guys think about Millar's comments? While I can't imagine The Avengers being anything other than a huge success, he might have a point about regular moviegoers losing interest when we start seeing films based on characters like Iron Fist and Doctor Strange. Although us comic book fans will be glad to see them, how can they hope to compete with something as epic as The Avengers? Be sure to share your thoughts on this in the usual place!

The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012. Adaptations of Mark Millar's Nemesis, Superior and Kick-Ass 2 are expected to be released within the next few years.

You're saying Millar should be killed because he speaks the truth? Sorry but he's right. The market will become oversaturated, and people will get sick of it. The comic film craze's days are limited.

I agree that CBM's are a trend much like westerns or Kung Fu flicks. Avengers is looking to be the apex of this trend. I just hope we get a Justice League movie before too late.
sylon
sylon - 2/24/2011, 8:15 PM
You will still be seeing CBM's @TheWitness. The genre will lose momentum though. It will never die completely. But the chances of seeing minor characters get screen time will diminish. The chances of seeing team up movies will probably drop to zero.

I agree with him about the Avengers though. I think it's a bit early to be putting out a group film of that scale. We have nothing to worry about with Iron Man or The Hulk, and from what I've seen Thor will be amazing, but we have no idea how audiences are going to take Captain America. Even with the strength of the other three films it's going to be tricky to pull off an ensemble film and have it meet up to such massive expectations. If Captain America flops, it could be the albatross around this movies proverbial neck. Going by what I've seen, and YES, this is my opinion and I know I'm probably in a minority here, I don't see how "Movie Cap" is going to fit in with a team full of such "heavy hitters". At the least I'm hoping he gets a MAJOR overhaul, either by the end of First Avenger or by the time Avengers starts shooting. I don't think Avengers could be the beginning of the end for CBM's as Miller almost puts it, but it could definitely set them back a little if it's not handled properly.

He is right, people like seeing a trend grow, and if one movie reaches one point, its put on a pedestal that many after it try hard to reach and ultimately fail. I'm sure we will see a slow down of comic book movies and a new genre take the spot light...maybe Sci Fi get its true glory

Marvel created a studio just to make comic book movies and tv shows. They eill be around way longer then 2015 , just might not be as often

If he's concerned about it then he can stop the production of the Nemesis and Superior CBM's. Do we really need these movies, because I won't be seeing them.

As for all the big ones being gone by 2015, what about The Flash, or the Justice League movies? I don't see them happening before 2015.

Here's a clue Mr. Miller. I've already seen enough failures-
DareDevil
Batman & Robin
Elektra
Nick Fury: Agent of Shield
Captain America (1991)

The list goes on. There will always be great stories to be told, and as long as they are told well, then comic book movies, westerns, romantic comedies, mysteries, or any other genre will continue. In short, Mr. Miller, you can BITE ME!!!

HE'S NOT [frick]ING SAYING CBM's WILL DIED ENTIRELY! Look at Westerns. Look how popular a genre that once was. No longer. Sure, they still make em. But how often? Not often. They don't make as much money as they once did.

My thoughts exactly. I can see it possibly slowing down a bit, but the wat Feige talks, the Avengers is the starting point, not the ending point. Plus, DC is just getting started in a way. We still have yet to see the Flash, Wonder Woman, or Aquaman.

vtopa - 2/24/2011, 8:33 PM
I still don't see how Avengers will work given that you are packing all these characters into one movie. Is 2 hours enough screen time? If they were smart they would make it a two part or a trilogy.
sylon
sylon - 2/24/2011, 8:38 PM
What the studio has planned and what the market will allow for are two different things. Is that not getting into your thick skulls? The general public isn't in love with comics like we are. The market will not sustain comic films as the top genre indefinitely. Eventually it will make way for a new fad.
superotherside
superotherside - 2/24/2011, 8:41 PM
sorry we've already had enough failures i think most have learned their lesson (except fox and sony of course) comic book movies will be another genre thing, what he is sort of saying like there isn't going to be any spy films any more after this... nahhh... they just keep getting bigger and hopefully better...
sylon
sylon - 2/24/2011, 8:45 PM
I never [frick]ing said it would fizzle out exactly when he said. Who knows how long cbm's will remain as popular as they are. But if you really think CBM's popularity will grow indefinitely, then you sir are the stupid one. It's common [frick]ing sense. It has nothing to do with wisdom.
Bryanferryfan
Bryanferryfan - 2/24/2011, 8:49 PM
Silver Surfer, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, Deathlok, Moon Knight haven't been adapted yet. On the DC side, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Preacher, Green Arrow, Flash, Sandman(golden age and Gaiman's version), Justice League, Teen Titans and others so yeah, this will go on for another 10 years. As long as there is material to be mined the studios will make films.

I bet if his Superman scripts woulda got picked up he'd be whistling a different tune....
superpooper
superpooper - 2/24/2011, 8:51 PM
Here's where I think he's wrong though... First, the Harry Potter....analogy is a poor comparison. The characters in Avengers belong together and have appeared together as long as they've existed. Secondly, comic book movies will defy your typical trend cycle. The main reason is that the technology is finally coming of age and will only continue to improve. There exists an endless amount of material to explore and even more we have yet to see. The episodic nature of comic book characters alone puts each and every one of them in the same class as James Bond as far as films go, and I think we're up to what, 25 or 26 Bond films by now? We haven't seen the zenith yet, not even by a longshot.

These guys make predictions all the time about things. They thought they had seen the zenith of the Superhero films after the Burton version of Batman Returns. They'll just have to evolve with the audience. As long as they don't stagnate, and listen to what the fans want, they'll be fine. Comics have been rolling along for over 70 years. There is always fresh life to be infused into the genre with the right talent. My .02
superpooper
superpooper - 2/24/2011, 8:56 PM
CBMs definitely aren't just a trend. I think they are just what the film industry needs in a time where we keep seeing one re-boot after the next. Comic book writers are your future screen writers.

@Intruder Slither my way out? When the hell did I say specifically how many years the craze would continue? All I'm communicating, is that he is correct on the fact that the popularity of the genre will eventually fade. One thing I can't communicate however, is how sick I am of the belligerence of some fanboys.

I think it all depends on the marketing campaign, like they did with Avatar, Inception, Tron etc. If you have good advertising, you can attract the public to the movies. It's all about how good the marketing can get for these movies in the next years.

@Dane, no people hate on Avatar because the only good thing about the movie were the special effects.

People hate on Millar because he's a douchebag. I'll still read just about anything with his name on it though, I think he's a good writer. Certainly better than some of the other "BIG NAME" hacks that are still writing at the top of the comic industry.

CBMs will die out just like HORROR movies, WAR, movies, and COMEDY movies will die out. NEVER! CBMs are just a new genre that will be around for a VERY LONG TIME.
marvelguy
marvelguy - 2/24/2011, 10:23 PM
I think he's right. Not about the failures, but fifteen years of these things will grow the general audience weary. They won't go away, but it will force the medium to become smarter and more creative.
