Mark Rufallo Talks About Getting Into Bruce Banner's Mind For The Avengers!

The actor talks a little about working on a big summer blockbuster like The Avengers and reveals the process he's going through in order to bring Bruce Banner to life on the big screen...

"I’m grateful that I get to do something like The Avengers," the actor said in a recent interview while talking about the differences between appearing in a big summer blockbuster like that and a lower budget piece such as his latest movie, Sympathy for Delicious.

"I’m a lot happier when I’m more grateful than when I’m like ‘what the f**k man? I can make ten movies with their lunch budget, okay!’ There is not a lot of grace in that, and it just makes me miserable."

Ruffulo went on to say that he's approaching the role of Bruce Banner as organically as possible: "I don’t know how else to do it. I have to find those places where it intersects with real life, I think," he added. "So working on Bruce Banner walking around and thinking ‘I could tear the roof off of this like that.’ That does something to you. I’m trying to bring those elements to whatever I do."

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

I think he'll be a great Banner... He was good in Shutter Island, especially when you watch it multiple times and notice how well into character he is and how well he 'plays his part' on the island

He's a good actor yes, but I'm still doubting he has the face of Banner...

But let's hope he turns out great!

Should've kept Norton tho.

Btw...

had the extreme pleasure of meeting this dude recently. one of the classiest guys ever. so nice and so humble. i was disappointed when norton didn't sign on for avengers but now im behind ruffalo 100% and would rather see a nice guy like him get the chance over norton.

I think he will do fine. I'm just upset because Edward Norton was fantastic and by Marvel first replacing Terrence Howard and then Edward Norton regardless of the reasons, to me destroys the continuity quite a bit. Doesn't mean I won't watch just that it takes me out of the universe that little bit because I will automatically compare them and that isn't right for any actor.

I think Ruffalo will do a great job. I wan't a big fan of Norton's Banner and his ego wouldn't work well with an ensemble cast.

NeoBaggins - 4/12/2011, 6:50 PM

They got this douchebag instead of Norton, but he might do okay since he looks like a creep. But if Banner has the ability to control his transformation, that would call for a little more confident Banner- maybe even a little arrogant. That definitely would have worked better with Norton, but, were stuck with this dude so we'll see.

Nothing against Ruffalo, but why couldn't they bring Eric Bana back if Norton wouldn't do it? It seems nausiating that they're recasting Bruce Banner for a THIRD time.

NeoBaggins - 4/12/2011, 7:00 PM

I could stomach the musical actor routine on two conditions; One, it stops here, or at least keeps the same Banner for whatever HULK may come in the future. Two, they don't try to put this dudes face on the HULK. It's bad enough that banners face keeps changing, but trying to make HULK look like Ruffalo seems like fail food.

YOU ALL KNOW THAT I'VE BEEN ATTACKED ON THIS SITE FOR DEFENDING MARK RUFFALO. HE'S DAMN FINE ACTOR. LOOK, IT'S A COMIC BOOK MOVIE WITH CHARACTERS THAT ARE LARGER THAN LIFE. IT'S NOT HAMLET OR OTHELLO... BUT DAMMIT THE NORTON ISSUE IS DEAD...STOP BEATING YOUR DICKS FOR ED... YOU BUNCH OF ASSHOLES... THE MOVIE IS ROLLING AS WE SPEAK AND SOME OF YOU COCKSUCKERS ARE STILL TALKIN' ABOUT NORTON...GET OUT OF YOUR MAMA'S BASEMENTS AND STOP JERKING OFF IN YOUR TRENCHCOATS AND GET JOBS AND GIRLFRIENDS... Well I think Rufallo is signed for like 5 movies (3 Avengers and some cameos). Hopefully the CGI Hulk isn't too different looking.

I think Norton's Hulk film is one of the best CBM's ever, but this may be a good change due to the interactions with Downey Jr, Hemsworth and Evans. I don't see Norton as Bruce Banner looking good next to Thor and Cap in costume.

GreenieGobbie - 4/12/2011, 7:12 PM
@soberchimera61 Because The Incredible Hulk isn't a sequel to the 2003 Hulk movie. Bringing Eric Bana back wouldn't make sense, especially since the 2008 Hulk movie is a reboot to the franchise. A franchise that Marvel is sticking to, not the 2003 film. Besides, Eric said he never wanted to return anyways.

Bryanferryfan Your all caps post is hilarious. You start off by saying "YOU ALL KNOW THAT I'VE BEEN ATTACKED ON THIS SITE FOR DEFENDING MARK RUFFALO.", then you go on to say;

"STOP BEATING YOUR DICKS FOR ED... YOU BUNCH OF ASSHOLES...

"YOU COCKSUCKERS ARE STILL TALKIN' ABOUT NORTON...GET OUT OF YOUR MAMA'S BASEMENTS AND STOP JERKING OFF IN YOUR TRENCHCOATS AND GET JOBS AND GIRLFRIENDS... YOU ALL KNOW THAT YOU BASTARDS WILL CAMP OUT FOR TICKETS..."

Personally, I think there's a chance that Mark Ruffalo could even outdo Edward Norton's portrayal.

Mark Ruffalo is a very talented actor and it sounds like he is taking this role very seriously, so I really don't think any of us have anything to worry about.

The way I see it, different artists render their characters differently. Thus, I don`t have a continuity issue with Howard/Cheadle & Norton/Ruffalo. I'm not saying I'm 100% supportive of the casting change; I'm saying that my mind is at ease because this happens in comics all the time.

Prefer Ruffalo to Norton. Ed always came across as smug to me.

AND I HATED the look of the Louis Letterier Hulk. Just looked like a swanky cartoon so I hope they change that competely.

I have spoken...these are my opinions...

Bryanferry, Lmao... masturbating in trenchcoats, [frick]in' hilarious... dude should copyright that shit... but seriously, what's with all that latent homosexual aggression and predilection towards masturbation? If your gonna insult people at least use new material, a bit of wit, and some proper grammar and spelling (for presentation of course). Your shit sounded like it was still under construction... maybe I should put on a hard-hat, throw down some flares...

And for the record, Bryan Ferry sucks ass.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 4/13/2011, 1:51 AM
Orphix And your opinion is respected. Far as Ed seeming smug though, it's weird when people say stuff lke that. An actor portrays a character and Ed Norton is a good actor. If he's a dick and he's smug, it wouldn't show in his performance, you would have to read about it- and what would that have to do with his acting?

There was this Kanye West song that I liked and it was on one day. I was like oh, I like this song. And the person I was with went crazy and started telling me all this stuff about him and his attitude and how he's a jerk. None of it had anything to do with his music. Ed Norton is good. If he was that difficult he wouldn't have made it this far. So, listening to what people have to say about his personality is moot. Especially a douchebag like Kevin Fiege who tried to defame Norton and imply he couldn't act. Just saying.
Orphix
Orphix - 4/13/2011, 2:51 AM
Ah - I should have made myself a bit clearer. I found Nortons portrayal of Banner a bit smug. And certainly not world weary enough.

For someone living in the rough end of brazil working for cash in hand he seemed to have it all sown up pretty sweetly. He even had a hottie after him and his boss loved him. They should have really emotionally beaten him up at that point and put him through hell.

Admittedly the story didn't do him, as an actor, any favours. That whole first act with him on his PC trying to discover the cure to his condition wasn't very exciting. Hard to build up a high sense of drama and raising the stakes whilst just watching a guy tap away on his laptop.

I just feel that Ruffalo (especially after seeing a load of his stuff) could really nail it so much better. The guy doesn't even need to say anything and you get the sense that his life has been one long ball-ache. That he feels crushed and weighed down by his personal struggles as well as an unjust system.

Just saying... ;o)
