There's been no word on what Marvel Studios has planned for The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Endgame's record-breaking release in 2019, but a Secret Wars adaptation seems inevitable. That could be similar to the original storyline or one that takes inspiration from Jonathan Hickman's reality-bending follow-up; however, a combination of both makes sense.
Original Secret Wars writer Jim Shooter recently made an appearance at the Megacon convention, and was asked whether he thinks a version of the event could be heading to the big screen.
He started by saying that someone from Marvel recently offered him $10,000 to write a novelization of Secret Wars before making sure they'd secured the rights to the storyline. "This one clown called me from Marvel. He wasn't an editor, but some executive of property management which was a little odd," Shooter explained. "He asked me if I wanted to write a novelization of Secret Wars."
The writer added that he was also sent a retroactive work-for-hire contract that he turned down before David Bogart, SVP of Operations & Procurement, Publishing at Marvel Entertainment, contacted him to apologise. He then offered him $10,000, despite the fact that Shooter was well aware his previous contract with the company was work-for-hire (meaning he has no rights to the characters he created on behalf of the company in the pages of Secret Wars).
While Marvel didn't have to retroactively pay him, Bogart insisted he take the money offered because...why not? "This means you're making a movie, right?" Shooter recalls asking. "I'm not allowed to tell you that," Bogart reportedly replied. Shooter revealed that he then said, "Well, I think you just did."
Interestingly, Marvel didn't actually have a piece of paper that definitively states they own The Beyonder, Titania, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man's black alien costume and other elements of the story, hence why this call was necessary. That's not to say any of those characters or concepts will be part of the movie version, but it certainly feels like something is brewing based on these remarks.
Here's hoping the Russo Brothers are given the chance to make this thing, eh?
