Samuel L. Jackson, promoting his recent film, Mother and Child, has spoken with IESB, MTV, and MovieWeb.

When Movie Web asked if Nick Fury gets to see any action, he replied "No, I get to talk really harshly with Robert Downey Jr., but that is about it," answered Jackson. "So far that's all I'm doing". When asked if he was happy that Whedon would be directing the The Avengers, "Yes I am," replied Jackson. "I'm looking forward to that."

UPDATE 1: IESB's Interview With Samuel L. Jackson

Q: You’ve talked about doing nine films as Nick Fury and that it would be a gradual road before you get a Nick Fury film. How has that journey been?

Sam: I got started on it when I did the end of Iron Man 1. My foot was on the path. Now, my foot is a little deeper on the path 'cause we've got Iron Man 2. I'm not in Thor. I’m supposed to do Captain America this summer in London.

Q: Why aren’t you in Thor?

Sam: I have no idea. I'm not in charge of making those decisions. I thought I was. They said I was in the trades, and I was like, "Oh, I've got a job!" And then, I called my agent and she said, "Nah, you're not in it. They misprinted." I was like, “Well shit, they need to pay me just 'cause they put my name in it."

Q: Did you get to read The Avengers script for Joss Whedon is going to rewrite it?

Sam: No.

Q: Do you have any desire to campaign for your own Nick Fury film?

Sam: The Avengers is my own starring vehicle for that character, pretty much.

Q: But, that’s so far away.

Sam: That's not that far away. It's just February. I've got time to get in shape and everything

UPDATE 2: MTV has posted their interview with Jackson too

"Nick does boss people around," said Jackson. "But every now and then, he does kill somebody."

While he didn't offer up any timetable for when we'll see Nick Fury getting down to business, Jackson assured fans that his character won't be content with simply dropping by Tony Stark's house or going out for donuts with the armored hero.

"[He will] shoot somebody," he said. "I'd like for him to do something eventually."

"I'm totally looking forward to finally getting Nick Fury into action," he added.

Jackson indicated that he'll probably be needed on set "next February" for his part in "Avengers," and offered up some thoughts on how he'll manage with Fury's signature eye-patch.

"[Nick Fury's eye patch] is easier than the cloudy contact lenses that I wear in the 'xXx' [films]," he said. "You can actually open your eye under the patch and kind of see things.

With The First Avenger: Captain America being set in WW2, Samuel L. Jackson is obviously referring to the film's present day bookends, which were confirmed by the film's director, Joe Johnston. And this mean Marvel will be filming The Avengers, while we wait for Thor(May 6th) and Captain America's(July 22nd) films to release.

Well, anyone who knows the character knows he was around in the 40's.Seeing as how he's had little screen time in the films, we don't know if that's carried over.It would make sense, as it would give Cap a link to the present. One of the most interesting things about Fury is that he's been around for a long time.It would be a shame to leave that out.

@kenny38606 The guy is 66 years old. He would have had to be 4 years old during Captain America's times.

Yeah, unless they show Furt when he's like 5 in the 40's, I think well see him in the present day bookends.

I hate to get on this again but Nick Fury was a ranked Military officer in the 40s and now he's black... With this version of fury they won't have him leading the howling commandos. Not racism... just recalling history.

i think they'll have someone young playing Fury, like in the Ultimates he looked younger in the flashbacks.

Nick will probably appear at the beginning of teh Cap film in modern times as they did him up or search for him, and then again at the end when they thaw him out.

Yeah, I'm going to go with the majority opinion here that Fury will be in the present day parts of the Cap movie! Although they might delve into the characters WWII background in a future solo movie, I dont think they'd complicate The First Avenger with that!

@Anil Rickly how about yes to a SHIELD movie. It's a must that they make one. There are so many SHIELD members that we have to see, that might not make in The Avengers.

Or better yet, in Captain America's sequel, have Cap based on SHIELD base of operation, with SHIELD having a major role. This would be even better, because it could bring in SHIELD's villain, HYDRA, which is also a villain of Captain America's.

He doesn't have to be the leader of the Howling Commandos. He could just be a black soldier who was given the serum before or after Cap.Maybe it wasn't a completed serum. That way, he could have the aging retardation part, but not the enhanced strength.

It could be based on the "Truth" storyline or Ultimate Nick Fury. The government wanted to test it on black soldiers before giving it to a white soldier.Maybe Nick was one.Or, maybe they tried to recreate it after Erskine was killed. They had an incomplete formula, so Nick didn't get the full Super Soldier treatment.

yes, Fury took the Infinity Formula and it makes him live longer. Yes, he was leading the Howling Commandos in WWII.

Lesser known fact...Black Widow also took the Infinity Formula and is nearly as old as Fury.

Somethings Samuel Jackson should have said in the star wars prequels:
You don't need to see my goddamn identification, 'cause these ain't the motherfuggin' droids you're looking for.
Womp rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'll never know, 'cause even if it did I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfugger.
This is your father's lightsaber. When you absolutely, positively, have to kill every motherfuggin stormtrooper in the room...accept no substitutes.
If Obi-wan ain't home then I don't know what the fug we're gonna do. I ain't got no other connections on Tattooine.
Feel the Force, motherfugga.
What ain't no planet I've ever heard of! Do they speak Bocce on What?
You sendin' the Fett? Sh!t, Hutt, that's all you had to say!
Yeah Chewie Rocky Horror's got a hair problem. What the brother gonna do? He's a wookie.
Does Jabba the Hutt look like a bitch?
Hand me my lightsaber... it's the one that says, "Bad Mother Fugga"
Lol

Well, for all the 616 Purists out there, I'm sorry, but in today's media, the feel of the Ultimate Marvel universe works better with the average, non-comic reading moviegoer. Sure, WE are the ones who pump money into Marvel, so WE are partly to thank for these movies even seeing the light of day, sadly, WE don't justify them making a true 616 universe movie simply because there aren't enough of us to make it into a ticket sales success.

So I'm sad to say it, we'll never see a "PURE" Marvel film. Nothing traditional. We'll see something resembling it, but Ultimate Marvel is more theater friendly.

As for Jackson, I like him as Fury. I happen to like Ultimate Fury, and after that HORRIBLE Hasslehoff Fury movie, I'm up for the race change, haha.
DCMarvelFreshman
DCMarvelFreshman - 4/19/2010, 10:21 PM
I'm not really a huge fan of the comics, but you got to admit that if these films were done simply with the 616 universe, they wouldn't be as successful as they've been so far. What we call the Ultimate Universe, is actually the 616 brought to realty.

And I think that Nolan & Favreau bring a much more realistic world into the comic character. Even though I know were' talking about Marvel here, I consider the Bat-Man film with poison Ivy in it, like the 616 universe. And the Dark Knight the ultimate universe. Again I know we're talking about Marvel. Just thought I'd throw my two cents out there.

JEE-ZUSSSSSSSSS!!!! I accept race change with characters. As long as it's done right and of course with none of the main characters. Would any of you guys go nuts if the changed the Black Panther to a white guy or bruce banner turned into a big black Hulk?? Doubt it. I'm Spanish ,French, Greek and Native American.... race is not an issue for me. I used to read Nick Fury when I was younger and yes he was a cool looking dude.... but Sam Jackson is a great actor and will do the character justice. Oh well, I used to draw him like this.... I'll have to start drawing him like this....

@ shazam

you wouldn't care if Black Panther was white??? The king of the African nation of Wakanda...white??? interesting.

the race change isn't a big deal for Fury because there's an actual comic version of him that was designed after Sam Jackson. so its acceptable.

but start changing the race of characters like Black Panther, Luke Cage, Captain America, and any other big names, and watch people fly off the handle. it has nothing to do with racism, but with everything that usually has to get changed in the conversion to the movie medium, the one thing you can ALWAYS get right is the race of the character, lol. so why change it if there's no reason?
