Why I Think THE AVENGERS 2 Will Be The Beginning Of A Shared Universe

Since last year's The Avengers , people (like myself) have been wondering if we will one day see a massive shared universe on the big screen, hit the jump to see how I feel about the topic.

*NOTE* - This article may contain potential spoilers for upcoming Marvel films (i.e. Iron Man 3, Avengers 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Amazing Spider-Man 2)

“Nothing’s been the same since New York” These are the words in which Tony Stark describes his life at the moment, but as fans do we really feel any different? Nothing has been the same since The Avengers, the film broke all types of records and is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Now since The Avengers there have been hundreds of rumors relating to the whole “shared universe” topic. Sometimes we get another piece of the puzzle, other times we are hopelessly let down. For a very long time, sites like ComicBookMovie, SuperheroHype! and ComicBook.Com have been reporting rumors that relate to the whole shared universe, some of the rumors were very convincing, some were a bit ridiculous. But now in this article I will explain why I think The Avengers 2 will be the beginning of a shared cinematic universe.

So for people who don’t know this I’ll break it down for you, Marvel don’t own all the characters film rights, Marvel own the following: Ant-Man, The Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor. While Fox owns: Fantastic Four and The X-Men. Sony on the other hand own: Spider-Man and Ghost Rider. Now why am I explaining this? Well some of us on this site don’t know all that, any way let’s begin. Last year at the premiere of The Avengers, the god himself, Kevin Feige came out and said “Quicksilver & The Scarlet Witch are a little complicated, if them [Fox] wanted to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we [Marvel Studios] wanted to use them in an Avengers movie we could”. Now why bring this up? Well I bring this up for a simple reason, if this can happen for characters like Quicksilver & The Scarlet Witch, what’s stopping Marvel from asking Fox to use Wolverine or asking Sony to use Spider-Man. Joss Whedon (Director of The Avengers) hinted at a brother & sister duo appearing in The Avengers 2, most likely Quicksilver & The Scarlet Witch. But you also must ask yourself, what was Fox’s big announcement? A couple of months ago Fox said they had a “big announcement” regarding the characters they own, allow me to explain.

As for Fox’s big announcement, I think Fox have established that X-Men: Days Of Future Past will be the beginning of the shared universe over at Fox consisting of Fantastic Four & obviously The X-Men. Back to the topic of X-Men, if you have seen one of Brian Singer’s Twitter posts, he posted a clipboard showcasing all the actors/actresses who would be appearing in the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past, it’s down below. When you look at this, you can easily see the clipboard is nowhere near full. There are at least five missing actors/actresses in the roles of The X-Men. Hopefully one of the missing roles is that of Cyclops, the original leader of the X-Men, who was completely wasted in the X-Men films.

Last year when The Avengers was in post production, The Amazing Spider-Man’s Oscorp Tower was scheduled to appear in the skyline of The Avengers. While a lot of you can say things like “It’s just a building” when in truth it’s more than just a building, if Sony & Disney can agree that they want a building, actually a main building to appear in Marvel’s biggest film of all time. That’s just a little more than “just a building”. Another instance regarding Oscorp & Avengers, was when Gameloft released the Iron Man 3 mobile game, in one level you fly around New York as Iron Man and you come across a billboard, the billboard shows the Oscorp logo seen in The Amazing Spider-Man. Some people could say it’s only there because Gameloft own both The Amazing Spider-Man Mobile Game & Iron Man 3 The Mobile Game, they may have just reused certain things from the Spider-Man game, or it could be something else.

So in conclusion, I believe very strongly that The Avengers 2 will spawn the Ultimate Marvel Cinematic Universe, consisting of The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, The X-Men and The Fantastic Four. Just a little something to take on the noggin, now that the Oscorp Tower has been established, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the tower pop up in The Avengers 2. Do you want to see a shared Marvel Universe? Comment below and let me know! Until next time, I’m MrSpock, Live long and Prosper.

Nope sorry. I still want Marvel to own all the characters and get them right.

Keep the Fox-men, Foxy-Four, Sony-man, and Sony-Ghost away from the MCU!

You know, that Oscorp building thing really irks me, because I don't remember it ever been anything more than a rumor, but people keep talking like it almost happened even though I've never seen it confirmed.

If it was confirmed and I missed, I apologize.

Really nice Editorial, by the way.

Id love to see it all lead up to a Civil War arc or somthing. I hope that DOFP and Wolverine can succeed. Along with Fantasic Four and TASM 2. Im kinda worried about TASM 2 the most, but maybe after a trailer and some more plot details my opinion will change.

Nice article!

P.S. Moon Knight please. I love his story involving the Civil War.

@TheManFromMars I do believe that Avi Arad and Kevin Feige already confirmed that they wanted Oscorp Tower in Avengers and the only reason it wasn't was because of time issues.

I think the Marvel is very willing to do this, but only with Sony. And I think the reason is because Spider-man was so recently rebooted. If it was Spider-man 4 like it was supposed to be, I really don't think Marvel would bother. It would be too much of a hassle to connect the dots, and explain how these characters have been in the same universe this whole time.

With that logic in mind, I don't think they'll ever do this with Fox, because those movies have been around for awhile, they have their own world and their own continuity, which they've already messed up. And that's Marvel's main selling point. Continuity.

They may do something similar to Sony with Fantastic Four, but I doubt it if the rumors to connect it to the X-men universe are true.

Nice article! I dream of the day we see Spider man and Wolverine join the MCU! My dream team would be Iron man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Spider man, Wolverine, Ms Marvel and Luke Cage! It probably won't happen but it would be amazing!

Good write up but I can think of quite a few problems that would cause it to fail. Who bankrolls the project? How would you divide the profits? Who distributes the film? How much screen time can you afford to give to each hero/actor? Do you take the original actors from the other companies and how do you modify their contracts?

I love the idea and I can dream about it all day but it seems implausible.

Even though Feige said that both Fox and Marvel could use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, i believe he also said that if Marvel used them, they could not refer to them as "mutants", because Fox has the rights to mutants.

Also, Marvel being able to use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch doesn't have anything to do with Marvel using Wolverine or the F4. The big difference is that Marvel legally cannot use them, but they CAN use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and hey don't have to ask permission to do it. So Fox would have to sign off on Marvel using the F4 or Wolvie, while there is nothing they can do to prevent them from using Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

As for the building rumor. I thought it was just that, a rumor. I don't think there has ever been any confirmation of that rumor. Like someone up top said, its possible i just missed it, but I don't remember anyone ever saying it was true.

Last, the Oscorp tower appearing in a Marvel movie would be a huge deal. The Oscorp tower appearing in a video game is not. Video games do not work under the same rules as the movies, and you kind of explained it already on the article.

has not been regarded as one of the greatest films of all times. that would be reallllllly stupid. and show how dumb this world has become.

still love the avengers, but really guys? greatest movie of all time?

would absolutley hate for a shared universe with all these films. tooooo many characters tooo many stories, not nearly enough creative heads in the studio industry that can aactually tackle all of this. its too ambitious it would be cool, but at what point is it cool to just see your favorite characters on screen with out a real purpose and without any real character development. there isnt enough money in the studios to produce that many films based on some comic books.

so basically youre asking these studios to stop making any other type of film but marvel franchise films....

I don't get the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver thing. Both companies can use them? Cause they were Avengers in the comics? So was Beast and now Wolverine. How do these rights to these characters work out? Yes, I get that Marvel can't refer to them as Mutants, but what makes these two different from the rest of the Mutants? What about Namor? He's a Mutant. He was introduced before the Fantastic Four in the comics. So he shouldn't really be affiliated with their rights to the character. Yet both the FF and X men are owned by Fox. So does that mean they have the rights to Namor cause he's a Mutant? My head hurts.
