Which Version of The Joker is Best?

Which Version of The Joker is Best?

Joker is the ultimate agent of chaos in almost every iteration, but which version is best?

In the superhero world, everybody spends so much time worshiping their favorite heroes. We all love Batman, Superman, and whomever else you may like on the side (I say this, because we all love some really weird character that few others know, no?) However, how many villains have earned such fanfare as the original arch nemesis, The Joker? The Batman has had such trouble dealing with the Joker, and his story has changed several times over depending on the comic book age and the writer involved. Was he one of the Red Hoods? Was he Joe Shill? Was he some poor lab technician who got in over his head and had a run in with Batman? I believe the Joker put it best at one point, 'If I have a history, I prefer it to be multiple choice!'

So, the real question is which is your favorite version of the Joker? Do you like Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, or does the best Joker only exist in paper and ink? The first aspect of the Joker should be believability. There's just something about a man who is absolutely out of his mind – to the point of sharp terror and a wicked uncertainty - like playing around with a friendly, rabid pit-bull. Even if you manage to entertain, sooner or later, you'll get chomped. The Joker is not one to remain truly loyal to his 'friends' Even the one person who stays with him all the time, Harley Quinn, tends to get thrown to the proverbial wolves regularly. So who does it better, the movies or the comics?

I suppose the next facet of the Joker would be style. From that off-purple and green motif to just that twisted grin, the Joker literally bleeds his own fashion. His 'face/makeup' is also an important chunk of the puzzle. His face is always scarred, but the nature of the scars can change somewhat. Is it from a chemical burn or a Glasgow smile? What completes the character more effectively is really the idea. His love/hate relationship always remains the same with the Batman though. Perhaps the Joker is just envious of all of those 'wonderful toys.'

Attitude is probably what sets the Joker apart from the entire rogues gallery of the superhero world. Sometimes, he's 'jovial' and doesn't really end up hurting all that many people. Comparatively, other times he is literally a stark raving psychopath willing to kill anybody. I tend to think the movies try to portray the character in a split light, but that might just be me. The comics lay down his foundation as a fairly rigid plot device. What are the Joker's primary motivations? What makes him the person he is? Can anybody make any sense of the Joker from either the comic or the movies?

What makes the Joker such an icon? Why are we so enthralled by someone who appears to be so lost to the rest of us? Did the movies make him a part of us, or did the comic books seal the deal? These are the questions I pose to you, my good internet denizens. People should be willing to defend their opinions, and somewhere along the line, you may find yourself at our webpage trying to find your favorite version of the Joker! After all, the only sensible way to live is without rules! You can see our entire selection at Joker Tshirts

Heath Ledger's performance was inspirational and scary at best, but I think Mark Hamill has left an Iconic mark that cannot be forgotten. Mark Hamill is the best Joker, I think.

Mark will forever be the greatest Joker of all time. Heath would be the greatest acting wise though.

Either Jack or Heath's....it's hard to compare all of them because the Joker in ever incaraation, is such a widly different character...I mean Hamill as wlel and Cesear Romero...they were all excellent for what they were supposed to do.

Mark Hamill's Joker is one of the corniest most unrealistic villains. The idea that a hero as skilled as Batman wouldn't be able to take him down is just way too ridiculous. It actually makes Batman look a little bad. I think it's more or less the fact that half of us grew up with the voice and are kind of attached to it.

Nothing can top what Ledger did for the character. It's a shame the comics haven't taken more to it yet. I don't think giant mallets and laughing gas cut it anymore.

u cant compare them, its two different type of movies/ (TV series).

The same as the Burton joker and Nolans, just completly different characters

They are all perfect for what they were meant to do. I can't picture a different cartoon joker from Mark's, and Jack and Heath hit the characters they were supposed to. It's like comparing Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, and Wayne Gretzky. They were all perfect for their sport, but you can't really say one was better than the other.

ledger was great at playing some random killer but to say he was the perfect joker is stupid

Ledger was definitely better than Nicholson. He did a brilliant version of what the Joker would be like in the real world. Mark Hamill is pretty much pure comic book Joker. His voice, to me, is the true voice of the Joker.

Andrew Koenig in "Batman: Dead End." He succinctly combined a real-life Joker while maintaining comic book flare without being cheesy or ridiculous.

I hate Caesar Romero's Joker... I LOVE the Adam West Batman show but he was a bad Joker in my opinion; Frank Gorshin would've been a fanatstic Joker though, too bad he was Riddler instead. Mark Hamill in Animation and I like Ledger and Nicholson equally in their own unique ways they portrayed him.

P.S. Its all about Red Hood to me now!

@SHS If you do get any Red Hood merchandise LET US KNOW!

Mark Hammill's Joker is the definitive take on the character outside of comics. He combines the sadistic glee, the humor, and sheer evil of the character. Everything's there. Ledger's take was one more suited for Chris Nolan's movies, and took away some of the jokes and humor and pumped up the chaos element.

So Hammill is the definitive Joker, but that doesn't mean hes the best. Nolan and Co. took liberties with the character, and you can argue that those changes are for the best.

Mark Hammil; is the Joker end of story.

Anyone that says Ledger was the greatest joker doesn't know balls about the character, and needs to just not comment. End of story.

*Note i think Ledger was great in TDK, but he wasn't the Joker.*

As much as I enjoy watching Batman's other half on TV or in Film. For me, nothing can come close to the Joker as he is portrayed in the comics.

He just seems to have a different level of scary in them. Maybe that's because your imagination gives him that extra edge.

To me, the Joker is used best when he's a secondary (albeit important one) plot element - an extra hurdle for Batman to have to deal with in addition to the primary problem in the story.

WRITTEN - Judd Winick's Joker [BATMAN:UNDER THE HOOD]
DRAWN - Tim Sale's Joker [BATMAN: LONG HALLOWEEN]
VOICE - Mark Hamil's Joker [BTAS & BEYOND]
ACTED - Andrew Koenig's Joker [BATMAN:DEAD END]

People need to remember that Mark Hamill was never the Joker! He voiced the Joker's character several times, but that certainly doesn't put him in the same category as Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson or even Caesar Romero for that matter! If anything, it makes more sense that the writers or directors for any Mark Hamill\Joker project get the recognition for portraying "The best Joker". People constantly saying Hamill was the best Joker is about a pointless argument as people saying Kevin Conroy was a better Batman than Christian Bale because they didn't like his voice...
Heath Ledger, without a doubt, best Joker ever.

Outside of the comics, Mark Hamill NAILED the character perfectly. Jack Nicholson would be a close second. Heath Ledger just WASN'T the Joker. Just some random psycho wearing makeup. Not impressive.
