BlackJack's Thoughts and Theories On Batman vs Superman's Latest Announcement

After hearing the news of Batman vs. Superman getting delayed by almost a whole year, there is a lot to be upset about and even more to be angry about. But it's not all bad news.

These past few months have been crazy. Right now, things don't look good. It looks like a mess to be honest. There are a lot of questions right now, but little to no answers. And it'll be like that for a couple of weeks. Warner Brothers moving the release date of Batman vs. Superman, or Man of Steel 2, back almost a whole year is very disappointing to say the least. Very disappointing. I've thought about that film every day since its announcement, and will continue to do so until its release. Knowing that I have another ten months to add on to that is depressing. If my math is right, yesterday we had about 546 days until it's release, now we have 839-840 days (if it stays at that date). It's pretty hard to not be disappointed at Warner Brothers right now. Although, I don't know about anybody else, but I don't like being sad, disjointed, or anything less than great. I'm not letting myself get too down about this. I've got bigger issues in life. While I am very disappointed with this news, I have not given up any hope. Not by a long run.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out where things went wrong. Obviously something did. Looking back at things, it's hard to tell when. Snyder, Goyer, and some other producers on the film have said that the outline was done before the release of Man of Steel. Affleck was cast shortly after that. Snyder knew what they were doing at Comic Con. They had a script finished by September. Rumors of Wonder Woman joining stated hitting heavy in November, and she joined in December. Later that month Chris Terrio came in to touch up the script. A week ago, Amy Adams said she read the script and shooting was about to commence. And most recently, we have heard rumors that Justice League will be shot immediately after Batman vs. Superman. That was all we heard about this film until Warner Brothers pushed the date back almost a full year. So where did it go wrong? My guess is sometime in December. I think WB was trying to accomplish too much in too little of time. The thing was not being rushed, but I mean they were trying to plan too much (a JL film) too late. They could have put Wonder Woman and Flash in there if they wanted to, no big deal. But I think they were trying to put a Justice League film into play at the same time as this without fully planning each step out. It doesn't really matter what the issue is, overall it's just bad. Now it's a good thing they pushed it back if it's not fully ready, that's undeniable. But the real issue is, why that issue wasn't fixed months ago, or weeks ago. Why was it there in the first place? No matter how you look at it, Warner Brothers encountered an inevitable [frick] up.

It's hard to try and be optimistic right now, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are some reassuring bits of information. So first off, we all want a good movie right? Well, if Snyder needs more time, I for one am glad he is getting more time. Second of all, Warner Brothers stated in the press release that production would start in the second quarter this year. Most people are assuming that's sometime between June/July-August. But the second quarter of a business year is actually January through March. With production already started and filming set to begin in February, nothing has really changed. Nothing has said that production or shooting will be stopped. They already where going to shoot in the second quarter of the year. So, anybody who thought that the delaying the date was going to slow production for sure needs to relax. That doesn't mean that they won't delay production. They very well could push it back a month. Besides having to wait another ten months to see the film, I think this was every body’s biggest issue. Well rest assured, for now at least. Plus, I'll give Warner Brothers some credit for getting the release date out as soon as possible. I don't think delaying it until August of 2015 will do much, and they can't move it to December of 2015 since that's Star Wars' territory. They chose the beginning of the summer movie season, and I'm glad. They could have put it in June or July, but they chose to give it to us as soon as possible (well, if it had to be rescheduled, that's the earliest date). It's also interesting to note that this will open up on the same day of an unannounced Marvel Studios film (Doctor Strange?), three weeks before X-Men: Apocalypse. At least one of those films will move dates.

So, what do I think will or has happened? I think Snyder and Affleck took a step back and told Warner Brothers that they weren't ready to progress with the film. I also think Warner Brothers agreed with that. I apologize ahead of time if I say "think" one too many times. I have a feeling that the rumors of shooting Batman vs. Superman and Justice League back to back are true. Now this is all speculation, but I think Chris Terrio was brought on to patch up the Batman vs. Superman script, but also write, or at least help write, a Justice League script. It sounds crazy, and two days ago I would have agreed that it was crazy, but with this new date, it makes sense. To me at least. As I said above, they are still scheduled to shoot within the same time frame as before the date move, so really all the did was just give them more time to shoot. I think filming will begin in March, and the next month and a half will be used to finish the Justice League script, finish casting for both Batman vs. Superman and Justice League, and further plan out what they are going to do (to some extent). They now have ten extra months. They have tons, and I mean tons of time to shoot two films and finish them. With this extra time, they can shoot both films this year, spend the first half of 2015 working on Batman vs Superman, and then spend the later half working on Justice League. All the Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman rumors would make much more sense. Plus, lets not forget that The Rock said he is teaming up with Warner Brothers in 2014. Now, this could be out there, but wouldn't it make sense if they shot Justice League in 2014, and he played Green Lantern or a villain? I mean, Justice League could be considered a 2014 project, meaning he wasn't lying in his tweet. I don't know, that's just some more speculation. Shooting the two back to back gives them two guarantee hits, saves them tons of money and time, it can solve any creative differences, and if any of that is true, that makes up for the fact that they pushed the date back. But, that's all my speculation and thoughts.

So while it sucks that it's going to be almost a whole year longer before we see the film, it's not all bad. Disappointing? Sure. But it's not all bad. It gives Zack and company more time to give the film they want, while also leaving the door open for a possible Justice League film to be shot. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, maybe I'm crazy. Guess we will have to wait to find out more information soon.

Well written MrBlackJack

I think the only thing that would calm fans down NOW.......would be to see a pic of Affleck in the Bat suit, Cavil in his new suit and Gadot in the WW armored suit....

all in an action shot.....

I pretty much agree. I will say that I think that one other major issue may be casting, especially if they really are gonna shoot Justice League right after it. They'll need the other heroes, they need the villains for both movies, etc.

I also think this increases the chances that Arrow and Flash will be connected to the movie universe. They need something to help maintain and build anticipation for the movies, since it will now be a little over 2 years until one comes out. An announcement that people will be able to watch the same Flash that will be in the Justice League would help do that, as well as help the show's ratings.

I've seen dozens upon dozens of comments about WB/DC being doomed now, about Marvel winning the next 2 years. (Just to be clear, I love Marvel and DC both, and I think this rivalry between fanboys is stupid.) And yes, Marvel probably has the next 2 years pretty much won, although I don't see a Marvel Studios movie winning this year's box office. As much as I hate to say it, that will probably go to TASM 2 or Transformers. But, think about this. If they do shoot them back to back, then you'll have the Superman/Batman film in 2016, and then Justice League in 2017. Unless Marvel puts out the third Avengers film, or a 4th Iron Man film in one of those years, WB/DC will own those years easily, at least as far as cbms go.

@Chefjason10, I think it would make more sense, especially when you consider all the visual effects work, CGI, etc. that goes into these movies, for Justice League to come out one year later. And if you remember, they shot the LotR movies back to back to back, and those movies came out a year apart.

@lhornbk ya that makes sense too bad they cant or aren't gonna at least do another jl member solo movie to come out in that aug-nov slot 2016

which i guess noone has said they can't or aren't going to do that. That could very well be the role the rock signed on for whoever he's gonna be

Great article!

I think that if they need time to really make it excellent, then by all means take it. I'd rather see a well-made film than a half-baked one.

Who knows though? Maybe they pushed it on May so that they can release the rumored shot-back-to-back JL movie on the last half of the year? Then maybe they'd be on par with Marvel releasing 2 movies a year after 2016. :P

Hmm...I wouldn't describe WB as such. If they were, they wouldn't have nabbed six times from 2000 to 2013 the top spot of gross studio market shares (Sony/Columbia follows closely behind with 4 times, then Paramount and Buena Vista with 2 times).

51 minutes? *whistles* I'll try to check that later. But in regards to handling DC properties, though I think you have a point, I'd like to be optimistic and think that they're finding a solution to releasing DC movies that could make them on par with Marvel releasing 2 to 4 superhero movies a year from 3 different studios.

Fast forward to 13 minutes into the show. His discussion ends at around 24 minutes. For me this delay was a huge wake up call, it made me realise Wb have no idea what they're doing right now. This delay better be worth it because if the film ends up being anything like MOS, then it's going to be a problem for me. We'll see in 2016.

Yeah im pretty sure they just needed more time to cast and work out how to film BvS and Jl back-to-back. The filming for BvS was only pushed back a month or 2, therefore the problem isn't with BvS but rather figuring out JL.

You know Marvel is going to bring their big guns for that May 6th date. Before this news, Thor 3 (Ragnarok) looked like a definite to have that date. It still could if Marvel decides to add other Avengers or other Marvel characters to the movie.

WB just gave Disney 2 free years without any competition. Smh, then we wonder why Marvel has more fans than DC, and we wonder why there is a bunch of disney trolls always trolling DC. This just tells me what I have known for a long time, DC needs their own studio or they need to lease their properties to other studios because this is just getting ridiculous. I mean, Marvel takes out at least 2 films a year and WB can't take out not even one? Smh, hopefully things change in 2016 and WB starts taking out a film every year from then on out.

While I am clearly in the minority, this movie should be cancelled and I hope this is the first step. WB should have incorporated the Dark Knight Trilogy into their DC Universe. Trying to recast and reintroduce Batman is a comepletely insane idea. I am 100% opposed to Affleck taking over the part of Bruce Wayne. If he needs to be in the film they should cast him in ANOTHER role. In fact they should make a straight Superman film and simply lay the ground work for a team up with the already established Batman and introduce Wonder Woman in her own movie.

@Mc

Actually, wasn't there hearsay around ComicCon time that WB was going to make a JL movie by 2016? They never really confirmed it, but I remember a lot of people talking about it. I'm going to go ahead and say that WB do have a plan but choose not to disclose it to the public. News of the script being done was reported as early as last year. This is why I'm of the opinion that the BvS movie is more of a strategy than of problems. After all, if it really was about production problems (polishing the script, financial problems, set, casting, etc.), why head to head with a Marvel film releasing that same date? I think it's more on leaving a message that they're gearing up for full studio wars.

How phucking hard can it be?

This right here just shows of your ignorance on how it is to be dealing with the business. If you think that it's all sunshine and rainbows, then guess again, cupcake. This is the reason why you're there and not doing those movies. I mean, if it's that easy as you make it to be, let's see you do it then. Just copy Marvel's blueprint.

Your naive views reveal someone behind that computer who is just another spoiled person wanting instant gratification.

Now THAT is embarrassing.

I understand most are really passionate about their heroes and CBMs in general, and some are just stating their opinions to improve it. Kinda like tough love. But yeah...I still say people should find that balance and learn when to stop and when to talk. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom to act like an douchebag.

Maybe in time, the raging ones will be pacified. And I'm really hoping that the next movie will be the one to do it. I just wish though that patience isn't such an alien concept to them.

@Fangz - Its not Ben I´m worried about. As I said before, I think you guys are in for a lot more disappointment along the way. DC and WB have a habit of making grand gestures and plans only to fail. Look at the history of high profile projects scrapped by WBs that had comic fans excited. Wonder Woman scrapped, Shazam scrapped, Justice League scrapped, a few Supermans scrapped. I really think Ben Affleck isn´t the greatest choice, but I´m all up for him doing it now. The video I did basically, I said from the beginning I didn´t believe the injury thing and this was because DC Warner Brothers just doesn´t know what they´re doing. It really isn´t that hard either, they have an animated department right now and nearly every movie they bring out is brilliant. Any one of those could have a made an amazing blockbuster movie with a few adjustments here and there. Added to that Marvel is also showing them how to do it. People keep giving WB the benefit of the doubt, I´m not sure why they believe in them so much. Its strange to me. As for Ben, as soon as I saw the news of his injury, and the push to 2016, I said I don´t believe that rumor a second and then hours later DC basically came out and admitted their script is the problem, something many were saying from the get go, especially adding Batman and Wonder Woman to the film, and the hot mess that Man Of Steel was. As a superman fan who has read awesome origin stories of his, there was no excuse for that. I suppose we´ll wait and see, however if I was them I´d be focusing on getting a Flash movie out for that date instead, give the fans something at least, but who knows.
