How Did They Make BIRDMAN Look Like One Seamless Shot?

Variety has produced a new behind-the-scenes video which explores the digital technology and the filming techniques employed by director Alejandro González Iñárritu to make it appear as though Birdman was one endless single shot.

PLOT - Birdman is a dark comedy that follows a former actor, who once played an iconic superhero, as he mounts a Broadway play based on a Raymond Carver short story in a bid to reclaim past glory. However, the play’s egotistical leading man threatens to throw everything down the tubes.

BIRDMAN is being directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu ("21 Grams"). He also wrote the script with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo. The cast includes: Emma Stone ("The Amazing Spider-Man 2"), Zach Galifianakis ("The Hangover"), Edward Norton ("The Incredible Hulk"), Naomi Watts ("King Kong") and Michael Keaton ("Batman Returns").

As a Mexican, I'm proud of Alejandro Inarritu and Cuaron, both are masters of the one-shot. Look at Children of Men's behind the scenes. Those guys are crazy with details nobody notice!

This was the best film I've seen in a long time. All year for sure. If you're sitting there boycotting it because for some reason you believe it's trying to end superhero films you're a jackass. Grow up, you're missing out

It was a really intriguing movie that I want to see again, but the problem with doing it as one continuous shot is that the kind of people who'll NOTICE that it's one shot are also the kind of people who'll notice the cuts.

I've studied film; I knew that the cuts were hidden in the pans even when I couldn't always see them. It's actually an old trick. And there are a ton of digital manipulations that I could spot (a ton more that I couldn't), and in some cases a simple dissolve into darkness when a character moves through something where there are no lights.

Your average viewer doesn't notice that a movie has, or doesn't have, cuts in it. The viewer who does will see the manipulations.

I recommend the film tho'. Especially if you've an interest in theater/acting.

@meimnioch: Welcome.

NEVER accept a drink from @Gusto.

Watch your wallet around @blackandyellow.

Watch your girlfriend around @Cipher.

Watch your refrigerator around @SuperCat.

Watch your grandmother around @batz11.

And watch your pleasure at anything Marvel Studios around @MantiniumBorn.

And watch completely normal adults totally melt down and admit to fapping over film trailers and film spoilers.

And then there's me.

Just watch from a distance, those who stand too close get bad reps and second-hand chronic halitosis.

;- )

Have fun!

'Cause there is nothing worse than waking up next to a blow-up doll with the face of Miley Cyrus drawn on with a crayon, broke, KNOWING you've been cheated on, your hiney throbbing, hungry with no food in the fridge, a VERY disturbing voice mail from your grandmother and a flood of nasty text messages calling you Disney Princess" and the unexplainable aftertaste of camel jizz on your fur-covered tongue.

And even worse, having ZERO clue how this all happened.

I saw the film for several reasons. The premise sounded fun. I love the cast. And the idea it would look like one continuous shot was interesting. The only other films I can remember that have done that are Alfred Hitchcock's Rope, a great film, done in 10 minute reels and made to look very much like one continuous shot. And a few years ago there was a Russian movie called Russian Ark that WAS one single 96 minute unedited shot.

Back to Birdman. I was disappointed on several levels. The single shot concept wasn't even close to being done well. The beginning of the film clearly is not a single shot and doesn't even try to be. So that was a small letdown. But overall the camera work was very interesting.

The film itself I thought was not good. I won't post any spoilers, don't want to ruin it for anyone.

The performances were very good, from Keaton to Watts to Norton and even Galifianakis. Emma Stone was excellent. But I thought the writing was the biggest let down, it was just missing something.

@bobofett2: Thank you for the heads up. I'd say I was thinking of going to see it, but my little Podunk shit town does not get movies on this scale of distribution.

To date, one of my favorite movies is Cuaron's "Children of Men".

If any of you have not seen it, do yourself a favor and do so.

It is PHENOMENAL.
