"Film Music Reporter" is reporting that composer Alan Silvestri has signed on to create the score for Marvel Studios' "Captain America: The First Avenger." Below is an excerpt from the article:

Film Music Reporter has learned that Alan Silvestri has signed on to score the upcoming comic book movie Captain America: The Fist Avenger. The film marks the first collaboration between Silvestri and director Joe Johnston, who previously has worked with such composers as James Horner, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard and Mark Isham. The film also marks Silvestri’s first scoring assignment since last year’s summer action film The A-Team and his first comic book adaptation since 1995′s Judge Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone. A number of composers, including Michael Giacchino and John Powell have been rumored to take the scoring assignment, but ultimately Silvestri was hired to score the film.

Since the Back to the Future score is memorable, so will the Captain America score.

WTFFFF I never knew he did Back To The Future! I thought it was another guy, crazy.
He did Predator too.
Excellent choice for a composer.

Anyone ever notice how similar Predator and Back to the Future scores are at times? But they still have a different atmosphere

Damn. They shoulda hired Craig Armstrong. He's the best next to Zimmer, IMO.

Hopefully his score for CA isn't nearly as generic as the one he did for G.I. Joe.

...wait...what...? Where did HE come from? What happened to Giacchino and Powell? Hell, even Horner?

Sure, Silvestri has done some magnificent scores in the PAST (notice my stressing of PAST), but he hasn't done a memorable score in nearly a decade (last one was Van Helsing). His scores with Zemeckis have been particularly bland (his recent ones, not Back to the Future).

I really hope he brings his A-Game (not A-Team) to this.

I want Cap's theme to sound something like this, only a little more cheerful and WWII propaganda-ish:

but not overboard with the patriotic crap. I don't want this:

are you out of your mind the patriot video you just posted with that music was epic, don't ever hate on John williams. That song was so American and patriotic.

@luffycapri, I guess I've just never been a big fan of Williams. But that was utter crap. There was only one good track on that album. The rest were bland, or just plain obnoxious.

Personally, I think Williams is better at themes than he is at situational music. All of his action scores cues sound the exact same.

Now, my favorite composers are:

Jerry Goldsmith
Thomas Newman
Howard Shore
John Murphy
Hans Zimmer
Philip Glass
Elliot Goldenthal
Clint Mansell
Ennio Morricone
James Horner
John Powell
Nicholas Hooper
Patrick Doyle
Alexandre Desplat
Vangelis

I think that about does it. I just prefer themes and recognizable (and distinct) cues over chaotic brass.

I will say, though, that I think William's score for Nixon was probably his best work. Totally unlike his usual stuff (which is why it was so good).

The guy who did Back to the Future? I'm sold.

@Elayis, I love John Williams because of his ability to make iconic music. Superman, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, they're all just so fitting. Maybe it's the significance of the movies themselves to an extent, but his music just really feels very significant. However, I do agree that he's better at themes then situational stuff. I guess it's a matter of preference. I think a lot of movies now lend themeselves to more subtle situation music (for example the Batman Begins score had less of a theme feel to its songs than Elfman's Batman score). Whatever the case, I think John Williams always brings something good to the projects he works on.

Much better than the Iron Man 2 composer who gave us no memorable tunes.

I have to agree that Silvestri hasn't done much outstanding stuff recently. I liked A-team as a movie but I cannot remember any memorable music from it.

Let's hope he does a great job on CA;TFA.

Cap really needs his own distinctive epic memorable theme music!

So far I'm not impressed with this guy. None of his scores reach out and grab me. I really wanna hear something like this for Captain America:

Back to the Future's score is a top 3 of all time! Hopefully he can channel that for this movie.

I would've preferred Michael Giacchino as his work on Star Trek was incredible. Any one know who is doing Thor? Thor and Cap need to have very memorable scores ala Indy Jones and Superman.

I would have liked John Williams given the themes he's made for patriotic films and the Olympics, not to mention stuff like Raiders and Empire.

Sylvestri's scores for Back to the Future, Predator and The Mummy Returns were good but they're pretty high key action themes and not brooding at all. I don't see him coming up with a cool theme for the Nazi's/Hydra like Williams did with the Empire in SW or the Nazi's in Raiders or Last Crusade.

He hasn't done anything great in a while though and I thought his score for G.I. Joe was lackluster. Let's hope he can get some of his 80's magic back.

As long Silvestri delivers something close to his Van Helsing score, I'll be extremely happy.

I'm actually glad, though, that Giacchino and Powell didn't get the job. No matter what anyone says, Giacchino is a Williams clone. I can't stand his action music, and most of his soundtracks, there's only a handful of tracks that I genuinely enjoy.

And Powell, in my mind, has only done one truly great score: X-Men The Last Stand. Everything else he's done has been pretty bland (his score for How To Train Your Dragon was good, but definitely not great, much less Oscar-worthy).

For awhile I thought it's going to be Michael Giacchino & Bruce Broughton whose gonna be doing the score to Cap, anyway I think with Alan Silvestri on board will be a good choice. Can't wait to listen and watch this movie...
