Captain America Screenwriters Hint at Future Tension Between Iron Man and Captain America

Speaking on Cap's relationship with Howard Stark, the screenwriters go on to say that Tony and Steve will definitely have tension in The Avengers.

In an exclusive interview with io9, the screenwriters of Captain America:The First Avenger, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed the following details about Captain America's relationship with the Starks:

One of the big references you have to the other Marvel movies is bringing in Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark. How much of a temptation was there to just make Howard a 1940s version of Tony?

McFeely: We did not know how to do it exactly. Do you make him the opposite of Tony, a straight-laced guy so that Tony is reacting to an oppressive household or something? He's a little closer to Tony…

Markus: I mean, he's Howard Hughes, and we all know where Howard Hughes went. We don't know if Howard [Stark] went quite that far, but when he becomes John Slattery [in Iron Man 2], he's clearly lost some of his sense of humor. So I like considering the evolution of that character. What really fascinated me in the back of my head as we were writing it is that, OK, Steve is fighting alongside this guy, next year he's going to be fighting alongside his son, who is going to appear to actually be older than his father and older than Steve. None of that is in the movie [explicitly], but it's all extra gravy.

And, of course, looking at the comics, the conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark has been a huge driving force over the last few years. Is that something you wanted to allude to or build into Captain America?

McFeely: We definitely wanted Steve to have a relationship with Howard so that, if Joss [Whedon] chooses to use it, Steve can turn to Tony and say, "I knew your father, and I have this opinion about you, I have this opinion about him." So if they have a conflict later that there's a resonance there.

Markus: I have no idea – literally - whether we're headed for Civil War or anything like that. They're just a great contrast. Tony Stark is never going to wave a flag.

McFeely: It's safe to say that in The Avengers they certainly have friction.

While it's still very, very early, its interesting that the screenwriter immediately picks up on the fact that the interviewer is referring to Civil War in his questions. It's probably safe to say that we wouldn't see a Civil War storyline until a third movie at least. Still, if that's the direction Marvel is heading, they'd need to start laying the groundwork in the very first movie. Would you guys be interested in seeing the Civil War storyline on the big screen or would you like to see a different story?

Civil War is a 2006-2007 Marvel Comics crossover storyline built around a self-titled seven-issue limited series written by Mark Millar and penciled by Steve McNiven, which ran through various other titles published by Marvel at the time. The storyline builds upon the events that developed in previous Marvel crossovers, particularly Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Decimation, and Secret War. The tagline for the series is "Whose Side Are You On?" The premise of Civil War involves the introduction of a Superhuman Registration Act in the United States. Similar acts have been used as literary devices in Watchmen, Uncanny X-Men, DC: The New Frontier, Powers, and Astro City, though never on a scale such as permanently altering an entire pantheon of established pop culture icons.

A Civil War movie would be nearly impossible without Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Wolverine, etc. You can't ignore those characters unless you're completely unfaithful to the source material.
That's not to say that I won't see one in that manner, however.

Theres always been tension in the Avengers Civil War didn't exactly do anything ground breaking, Tony and Cap have always been opposites of each other, civil war just took there tension and conflict to the max. So this idea that if Cap and Tony Stark have some conflict between them in the movie that its going to lead to Civil war in a sequel is stupid

They're meeting for the first time, of course there's some tension. To go from that to Civil War build-up is a tad premature.

I'd like a Civil War movie, but Marvel would have to get a ton of characters back under their wing.

As close as these two have been over the years (and you can add Thor into that last statement) they have almost never seen eye to eye on things. Since the very start of The Avengers Cap and Tony have clashed many, many times. They are the best of friends (until Civil War) but they have rarely agreed on much of anything. As different as they are at the core of theirindividual personas they have a deep respect and trust for each other.

they would have to do a lot to do a Civil War movie... I think that might be too much for them to do... idk it just depends... I think Civil War might be too long of a story to do in one movie, of course unless you do it LOTR style... like a 4 hour movie maybe... lol idk

it would be great if they could do it though!

w/o those characters {X-Men, F4} I don't really care to see a Civil War film.

A Civil War movie would be awesome to see but hard to do, it would require multiple movies or a really long single movie. More importantly Marvel would have to get FF, X-Men and Spidey back from the idiots that are Sony and Fox.

Civil War anyone?
Ah,but alas, twill be anti-climactic without the Spidey and FF properties back home safe and sound at Marvel- being key characters in the story-line.

if the Avengers puts that horse down(DC) a Civil War film would be like beating it with a a nuclear weapon.

I'm not sure what kind of a budget it would take to hire enough actors to be able to fill the spots to have enough heroes. There's only six Avengers right now (Hulk, Cpt. America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Blackwidow, Thor) and a 3 vs. 3 battle really doesn't make for an interesting "war".

they just need to get the license and do the damn movies, this could be the star wars of our generation and happy replacement harry potter, yes talking about saga movies that last for many many years. civil war here we go!!(iron man red white and blue armor)

@PaulRom is right. Civil War would be impossible without the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. They are really key roles in the story line and I'll be really pissed if they do a Civil War movie without them. I probably wouldn't care to see it. But then again Civil War isn't the answer for a The Avengers to have tension. In Ultimate Avengers they had tension and it wasn't Civil War so I don't understand why Civil War would be necessary as a film to be honest.

While Marvel probably won't be getting SpiderMan, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc, back anytime soon but there's a tiny glimmer of hope way down the line.

It can be argued that the current trend of 8,000 CBM's a year is a trend, and that while the genre will never disappear, it will inevitably cool down. There are only so many reboots/retelling of the same origins before the general public get tired of it. One of the best things studios can do to increase interest in a film will be crossing over franchises and having characters interact in each others world(I'm looking at you DC!)Who wouln't love to see Andrew Garfield's Spiderman teaming up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to take down Mark Ruffalo's Hulk?! Eventually the studios will eventually to need to rely on stunts/gimmicks like that to stay 'fresh and interesting' to the general public.

Eventually, if the CBM trend does indeed begin to cool off, and Marvel, Fox, and Sony are having a harder and harder time making money off of less and less profitable characters, the time may come when they see the potential of coming to an agreement, thereby allowing their characters to cross paths in a movie like Civil War. Probably won't happen, because Hollywood sucks and studios care more about $ than giving fans what they want but it is possible.

This is the kind of inner-team tension as a DC-fanboy I would have seriously loved to see between Clark and Bruce. But since we'll probably never see that, I'll settle with Marvel's red/blue hero and billionaire duking it out. Doesn't sound too bad at all! ;D

JohnTom88 - 7/21/2011, 1:33 AM
I don't think Bruce and Clark have the same conflicting mindset. Bruce is always the thinker, Clark is the action man. While both Marvel guys are both thinkers with differing priorities. Tony Stark thinks wide and long, Steve Rogers thinks focused and short. One is strategic, the other is tactical.

@SuspenseSmith- Dude a film like that would be GREAT!!!

@JohnTom88- Not really true actually. Take the animated Worlds Finest movie for example. Batman was interrogating a criminal and was about to seriously harm him. So Superman tried to stop him- he wanted Batman to show more "compassion" thus leading to them having a minor scuffle. It's happened a few times in the comics too- Clark just doesn't agree with Bruce's interrogation methods, there's even been times in the comics when he has shown disdain for Batman's hole...hanging criminals over the roof interrogation method. They don't agree...at least...in the BEST written stories they are at odds with each other. Never was a huge fan of their big buddy/buddy relationship. I always preferred them being more at-odds with each other. Makes for better stories IMHO. ;D

Cool beans.

Just save it for like the 2nd or 3rd movie. The 1st should be all about the bromance.

Too add to the Batman vs. Superman discussion: That reminds me, I've been watching the Justice League animated series and in Twilight pt.2 after Batman interrupts the fight between Darkseid and pulls Supes through the portal, Bruce tries to assure him that there's no way anyone could survive that blast and Clark is like "You know what, Bruce? You're not always right." It's not a groundbreaking moment by any means but that scene really stuck with me and got me thinking that it'd be really cool to see that type of tension between them in a JL movie. It doesn't have to evolve into this all out brawl but subtle butting of heads stemming from their different handling of situations and Bruce being a bit of a control freak. Stuff like that to make for some interesting on screen moments.
JohnTom88
JohnTom88 - 7/21/2011, 3:31 AM
Well that's just about moral/ethics discussion. The clash between Steve and Tony is much more than that such as mission execution (Steve go for the safe but longer route, Tony goes for the most efficient route) or Avengers grand plan (Steve for the human factor, Tony is for infrastructure where memberships are replaceable).

for me, i don't really matter if Marvel could get all the characters currently owned by other studios or not for a Civil War storyline, as long as Cap and Tony are still the main focus, it's fine.

what i DO NOT want is a robot clone of Thor. they already got the real Thor..for the movie, i WANT em to use him. the robotic clone thing belongs in the comic books.

last, but not least, for a civil war movie, i wonder if they would SWITCH the roles, where the flag waving Cap is the pro-registration champ and the movie Tony would be the rebel. i mean, it's RDJ. i just can't imagine HIS Tony would be pro government in controling his buddies, fellow super heroes. i mean, just look at the scene in the beginning of Iron Man 2, where he embarrassed the senator, played by Garry Shandling. i dunno..unles, throughout the whole movie universe, Tony'd go thru some life changing event, but, we already got and seen Cap's the rebel vs. Tony the authority, in the comics. for the movie version, i really wanna see they switch things around. that'll be MUCH MUCH MORE interesting.

Civil War was my favorite Marvel storyline. It'd take so much for them to establish that story. I'd love to see it, though.
