The first plot synopsis for The Marvels has been released, and it sheds a little more light on what fans can expect from Captain Marvel, Spectrum, and Ms. Marvel's universe-saving team-up. Check it out!

Captain Marvel was released to positive reviews and a massive $1.128 billion at the worldwide box office back in 2019. By the time The Marvels arrives in theaters, it will have been nearly half a decade since Carol Danvers last starred in her own solo outing, though she'll have some company in the sequel.

The Avenger will be joined by Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau/Spectrum and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and we now have more details about what to expect thanks to a newly released plot synopsis!

"Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe," reads a translated version of the synopsis sent out in a recent press release.

"When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as 'The Marvels.'"

The Supreme Intelligence's defeat clearly did little to bring peace to Hala, and it appears Carol will now have to deal with the fallout from her actions decades after she broke free from her oppressors.

Getting some backup from Monica and Kamala will certainly help, though we do wonder how Marvel Studios will address what Captain Marvel was up to in the late 90s, 2000s, and 2010s! It's also currently unclear how the events of Secret Invasion are set to factor into this sequel. Hopefully, a first look at the movie isn't going to be too far behind these latest plot details.

The Marvels is set to be released in theaters on July 28, 2023.

Estranged niece? Huh?

@TheVandalore - In Captain Marvel, Monica refered to her as auntie Carol. Just cause she grew up with her and such.

With what universe though, I wonder.

For my money I'm waiting to see the first interaction between Carol and Monica after so much time. That has every indication it will be very tense and dramatic. The first film didn't bother me as much as others, even though it did have a few flaws no doubt, but still I'm looking forward to this one. Hopefully it delivers on all counts.

@Mugens - Absolutely. It's likely not true, but it just feels like we got more emotion out of Carol in the Ms Marvel for a few seconds than we've gotten from her in total thus far. Probably by design, and yes I know the character can be...abrasive, but I'd also like to see things fleshed out a bit between them. I'm sure Kamala will facilitate that though.

Another marvel movie with main character that’s team up which could make main character of movie named after them feel like sidekick again

Cool…another stunning and inspiring movie from Disney. I’m sure it’ll be super amazing and not suck in any way.

''this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert''

Oh yeah, I am definitely taking this as confirmation that part of the movie will be a musical now.

I'm pretty sure a big focus and emotional core of the movie will be between Carol and Monica who I'm sure especially feels betrayed and ticked off at Carol for NEVER returning to earth after all those years and I feel Carol becoming too preoccupied with the bigger picture and not the connectiosn she made is something she's going to have to work through as part of her arc this time around.

I protest this movie on behalf of the 26 races/ethnicities & 57 genders that apparently won't be represented in this movie.

Because it only takes 3 women to save the universe but everyone in the MCU to defeat Thanos and his army.

Sounds alright to me. If it sounds underwhelming, synopses don't always do the movies justice.
