Captain Marvel was released to positive reviews and a massive $1.128 billion at the worldwide box office back in 2019. By the time The Marvels arrives in theaters, it will have been nearly half a decade since Carol Danvers last starred in her own solo outing, though she'll have some company in the sequel.
The Avenger will be joined by Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau/Spectrum and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and we now have more details about what to expect thanks to a newly released plot synopsis!
"Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe," reads a translated version of the synopsis sent out in a recent press release.
"When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as 'The Marvels.'"
The Supreme Intelligence's defeat clearly did little to bring peace to Hala, and it appears Carol will now have to deal with the fallout from her actions decades after she broke free from her oppressors.
Getting some backup from Monica and Kamala will certainly help, though we do wonder how Marvel Studios will address what Captain Marvel was up to in the late 90s, 2000s, and 2010s! It's also currently unclear how the events of Secret Invasion are set to factor into this sequel. Hopefully, a first look at the movie isn't going to be too far behind these latest plot details.
The Marvels is set to be released in theaters on July 28, 2023.
