Which CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 Rumors Were Fact & Which Were Fiction?

A look back at some of the juicy rumors that were reported for Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Let's see which scoops were factual and which were fictitious.

Features Opinion

Vulture: 3/30/2012
Insiders tell us that a field of ten directors has been whittled to just three for the follow-up to last summer's hit: George Nolfi, the writer-director of The Adjustment Bureau; F. Gary Gray, best known for directing The Italian Job; and, naturally … Community's Anthony and Joseph Russo?

Verdict: FACT!
has some good sources. The Russo brothers ended up directing the Captain America sequel (confirmed 6/6/2012). What I find most interesting is that Claude's source made a point of saying Kevin Feige is a "vibe guy." Meaning: if he is going to spend several years working with a director(s) on a film he had better make sure he gets along with that person(s). Clearly, he dug what the Russo boys were serving.

The Playlist: 6/25/2012
The website posted a podcast in which Erik McClanahan, Gabe Toro and Rodrigo Perez discussed rumors that they had heard regarding various comic book movies. There were a lot of rumors, so let's go one at a time. The transcriptions below are via Screen Rant.
Black Widow and Hawkeye may also be involved in Captain America 2 and there will be some romance between them.

Verdict: FACT & FICTION!
Black Widow was involved but there was no Hawkeye, thus no romance between the two. Though, Black Widow was seen wearing an arrow-shaped piece of jewelry around her neck.

Bucky could be back as Winter Soldier, a Russian Spy.

Verdict: FACT!
Sebastian Stan was brought back to play the Winter Soldier.

Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in Captain America and who has a multi-picture contract, may return to play her own character’s niece, Sharon Carter.

Verdict: FICTION!
Hayley did appear in the film but she played a senile version of Peggy Carter, not her niece Sharon Carter. That role went to Emily VanCamp.

The villainous Dr. Arnim Zola (Toby Jones), who served as the scientist responsible for harnessing the power of the Tesseract/Cosmic Cube for the Red Skull, may return in a new form.

Verdict: FACT!
Toby Jones was back for the sequel and made his return in a new form - consciousness inside of a computer. Hail Hydra!

Nick Fury may get some of his origin story fleshed out as well.

Verdict: FACT!
There is a scene in the film with Secretary Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in which they discuss their past.

Hollywood Reporter: 7/16/2012
Anthony Mackie is in negotiations to star alongside Chris Evans in the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger that is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

While Marvel would not comment nor divulge character details, it is believed that Mackie will portray the Falcon, one of mainstream comics' first black superheroes and perhaps its first American one.

Verdict: FACT!
Anthony Mackie did play Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon.

NY Daily News: 8/19/2012
Sources say the studio’s now focusing on casting the film’s female lead. Hollywood insiders tell us that current front-runners for the coveted role include “The Twilight Saga” star Anna Kendrick, as well as Felicity Jones, who reportedly lost out to Keira Knightley for the lead in Paramount’s untitled Jack Ryan reboot. Imogen Poots, who’s filming Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups,” is also in the running, we’re told.

Verdict: NOT SURE! MAYBE!
Anna Kendrick gave cryptic responses when asked about it. 3 days after this report Anthony Russo praised Kendrick and mentioned wanting to work with her in the "near future." Felicity Jones denied it. Imogen was included in other lists of contenders for the part.

Deadline: 10/2/2012
I’m not sure of the character, but evidently it’s a love interest for Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). I’m told that Game Of ThronesEmelia Clarke, Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay, Warm Bodies‘ Teresa Palmer, Knight Of CupsImogen Poots and The Five Year Engagement‘s Alison Brie are testing for it. I’m also hearing that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will be in the mix on this film.

Verdict: PROBABLY ALL FACT!
Even though none of these actresses got the part I'm gonna give Mike Fleming Jr. the benefit of the doubt because he has a great reputation with his scoops. And yes, Scarlett Johansson did appear in the film.

Matthew Aaron Show: 10/20/2012
Once again, just wanted to tell you and I'll be talking about it all week... Frank Grillo has tested for Crossbone in the new Marvel movies

@BRIANMBENDIS Have it on reliable authority that Frank Grillo is THIS CLOSE to getting the role of Crossbones in the Marvel movies

Verdict: FACT!
Frank Grillo did test and win the role of Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones (confirmed 10/29/2012).

Matthew Aaron Show: 10/27/2012
Matthew Aaron said that, according to the same ‘Marvel rat’ that informed him of Frank Grillo's involvement, one of the future films that Crossbones will appear in post-The Winter Soldier is Joss Whedon's Marvel's The Avengers sequel. Aaron added that Grillo will apparently portray Crossbones in three films total, with the inevitable third Captain America movie presumably being his final one.

Verdict: FICTION & A MAYBE!
Like all Marvel actors, Frank Grillo has a multi-picture deal with the studio. His character survived the final film and should return in the future, but as far as I know he will NOT be in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Roger Wardell: 11/1/2012
You guys demanded it, so let's take a look at the infamous Roger Wardell. Is he an internet troll or a Marvel insider? Below, are a collection of tweets Roger made that a CBM user catalogued.

The main antagonist of the movie is a certain Baron (this was only a tease and we are not sure if it is Baron Zemo) - THIS TWEET WAS LATER DELETED BY ROGER!!!

Verdict: FICTION!
I don't remember a Baron Bucky/The Winter Soldier or a  Baron Alexander Pierce. Do you?

Crossbones will have a rivalry with the Winter Soldier, which results in a really epic fight scene.- THIS TWEET WAS LATER DELETED BY ROGER!!!

Verdict: FICTION!
I don't recall any rivalry between the two, nor was there an "epic fight" between them.

Captain America will lead a small team that includes Falcon and Black widow.

Verdict: FACT! BUT...
Before you jump on this and say, there he got one right, let's think about this for a moment. That tweet was made on October 19, 2012. Why's that important? As you can see above, Falcon was confirmed in July and Black Widow was basically confirmed by Deadline at the beginning of October. To say Falcon would team up with Cap is a no brainer and it would seem logical Black Widow, a fellow Avenger, would also be teaming up with Cap as well. To be fair, that was the small team assembled for the film. Did Roger have inside info? Perhaps, but it seems more likely he made a logical guess based on information that was available at the time.

Black Widow's past will be revealed in flashbacks and will have ties with the winter soldier..- THIS TWEET WAS LATER DELETED BY ROGER!!!

Verdict: FICTION!
Yes, Black Widow knew of The Winter Soldier but there were no flashbacks showing ties to him.

Final Thoughts: If you claim to have insider info, you have to take the good with the bad. The fact that Roger Wardell deleted his own tweets that painted him in an unfavorable light should be enough to convince most people he is probably full of poo.

Wardell supporters, want a glimmer of hope? On July 15th, Roger tweeted, "Inside news: Marvel is keen on using a certain winged hero in Captain AmericaThe Winter Soldier, potentially joining the team in Avengers 2." A day later, Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Mackie was playing Sam Wilson/Falcon in the film. I'm in the non-believer group, but even I have to admit this is intriguing. So, did Roger have inside info or was that just a spooky coincidence? See, if Roger had the scoop on this why not say positively Falcon is in the film. Saying Marvel is "keen on" using him implies that Marvel hadn't even decided 100% that the character should be in the film, yet that can't be the case since Mackie was hired for the part a day later. The character was in the script already. Marvel wasn't mulling it over. If Roger wanted to prove he was for real he simply could have said a casting announcement for the part could happen any day, or such and such actor(s) are up for the role, but he didn't.

Keep in mind, a few weeks after that tweet he alluded to Hugo Weaving returning as Red Skull for Captain America 2. That didn't happen.

Deadline: 2/1/2013
I’m told that Marvel Studios has found its female lead for the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They are in talks with Emily VanCamp.

Verdict: FACT!
Emily VanCamp got the coveted role of the female lead. Though, it turned out to be a smaller role than most fans had expected or had hoped for.

Deadline: 3/22/2013
Here is a fun Marvel scoop. I’m hearing that Robert Redford is in discussions to join the cast of Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Redford is in talks to play a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D., the superhero collective run by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character.

Verdict: FACT!
Robert Redford joined the cast of Captain America 2, and played a senior member of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Latino Review: 3/25/2013
Latino Review’s most recent scoop, “just got off the phone with my Marvel source who gave me an Exclusive,” Canadian mixed martial artist Georges St-Pierre (GSP) has officially signed on for the 2014 sequel as the mercenary villain known as (surprise) Georges Batroc, aliased Batroc the Leaper.

Also, with Academy Award-winning actor Robert Redford joining The Winter Soldier cast recently, sources of Latino Review report that his senior S.H.I.E.L.D. character’s name is Pierce.

Verdict: FACT!
See all of that above? It is all true.

JoBlo: 6/19/2013
First up, is some news on Disney and Marvel’s slate, starting with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, which our source says is pretty much a sequel to THE AVENGERS and plays the biggest role in leading into THE AVENGERS 2. In addition, the sequel will go more in-depth on Black Widow’s back story and gadgetry (which she barely used in THE AVENGERS or IRON MAN 2). Sounds like the red in her ledger will finally be exposed.

Verdict: FACT & FICTION!
Yes, Cap 2 played the biggest role in leading into Avengers: Age of Ultron. Though, it really didn't go in-depth on Black Widow's past. We did see more of her gadgets.

Lainey Gossip: 2/3/2014
But the thing that’s probably going to leave people talking the most is the post-credits stinger. They’re calling them “The Twins”, the brother-sister team of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, and they don’t look like any Marvel heroes we’ve met to date. Having seen them, I am really sad for Fox and the X-Men.

Verdict: FACT!
Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson)  were featured in the film's post credits scene, along with Baron von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann).
After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier. Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941, Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is produced by Kevin Feige, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp and Hayley Atwell, with Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
