CAPTAIN MARVEL: Here's Why Chewie Was Renamed "Goose" In The Marvel Studios Movie

Comic book fans have been wondering why Chewie is called Goose in Captain Marvel, and the movie's directors have now shed some light on why the decision was made to rename the fan-favourite feline...

In the comics, Carol Danvers' faithful feline companion (who is secretly a Flerken) is called Chewie. That's obviously a reference to Star Wars character Chewbacca, so why has Captain Marvel renamed him Goose - especially when we know that Kevin Feige is a huge fan of the sci-fi franchise?

Well, during a recent interview, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck shed some light on that decision and the latter explained that they wanted to do something a little different for this movie.

"It wasn’t a big thing. It just felt like Star Wars was so part of the culture that, it just felt like we wanted to remove it a little bit, you know, the nostalgia for the Star Wars movies which there are so many of around us. You know, when we were kids, Star Wars felt like it was something from the 70s and 80s, and I think that was the spirit of Chewie from the comics but we felt like we wanted to sort of just slide away from that slightly."

In other words, Captain Marvel's 90s setting made a reference to Top Gun more fitting than Star Wars. Boden went on to explain why they thought that was the best move here.

"Yeah, and just the idea of having a reference that would have been so specific to Carol Danvers’ past, as her past in the movie itself being a pilot in the 1980s when Top Gun was out and having a reference that felt a little bit more specific to her. Whereas Chewie, when the comics were being written was a very specific reference in time but now with all the movies out it feels more contemporary and not so specific to her past."

Ultimately, a name is just a name and it really doesn't make any difference in the grand scheme of things. It still hasn't been confirmed whether or not Goose is actually a Flerken in the movie, but it would be very surprising for the cat not to show off his alien powers, especially with many critics claiming that he steals the show.

On a related note, Marvel released this video last night and, well, you need to see it to believe it...

Not really satisfied by that explanation tbh. The damn cat's name is Chewie, call him Chewie!

In other news, I found myself watching that video is a hypnotic trance and needed to stop.

@RorMachine - Eh. I dunno, I felt the explanation they gave made sense narratively. I mean, Danvers being an airforce pilot in the 80s would be more a fan of Top Gun than Star Wars I would think.

@Murdock857859 - Maybe so, but that doesn't mean they should change the name. Chewie is a character just like the rest of them. Imagine they were like, "well, we feel that Carol's mother would have been a big fan of Cheers around the time she was born, so we decided to call her Diane Danvers... and we also get the alliteration!" I know that's a bit different as Goose is just a cat, but it's the same principal. I dunno, I always just liked that the cat was named after Chewbacca and I bloody hate Top Gun do maybe that's why it bothers me!

@TyrantBossMedia -

I think you are right about that pet website, Disney/Marvel are business companies and they know what they are doing.

I'm in the minority that would give 2 fúcks about star wars movies, my first one was the phantom menace and that was HORRIBLE !
then saw the attack of the clones and I kept wondering why so much love for that franchise so I tried again with revenge of the shít and I lost it, DONE with that franchise, never again and I don't think I will ever watch another one.

about Goose the cat, imagine if he was Grey color !

@Ror

I'd watch Top Gun over star wars any day
(I haven't yet)
but I would.

@richal13 - Joking of course (mostly) 😜, but I agree. I can't stand Tom Cruise.

@RorMachine - You hate Top Gun?
Well then, that explains everything lol. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the film given my affinity for all things fighter jets and the music is awesome as well.

Also, I'm glad you said it's a bit different because I am yet to meet someone who'd name their child after a TV show character but I sure as hell know people who'd name their pets after them. So it just doesn't bother me as much I guess.

@ChangAlang
Dexter? You mean like:

Dexter or should i say Dex-Starr, the Red Lantern Cat!

Please tell me you named your cat after him and that this is not a coincidence, but a DC reference! :P

You'd gain extra points, man!

I like the name change. It's funny and not only is it a nod to Top Gun, it makes sense with Carol's pilot history in the comics.

@L0RDbuckethead -
Carol's pilot history is such a small part of who she is that will become increasingly less relevant - meanwhile a reference to a cosmic adventure would remain relevant considering she is going to be a primarily cosmic hero in future films returning to Earth only to be the leader of the Avengers.

@Scarilian - I'm talking about Goose in relation to Carol. The name change makes sense. Especially because Chewbacca is alive and a current character in the Sequel Trilogy.

I'm sorry you don't like it.

@L0RDbuckethead - I agree... and the explanation makes a lot of sense... though some people are clearly having trouble comprehending it...

@L0RDbuckethead -
It speaks more of a director wanting to cram in Top Gun references because they are unwilling to develop a Top Gun style dynamic and hope that shoving in references would fill the void.

@L0RDbuckethead - I agree. I think it's easy to hate change and to think the comics are the gold standard, but really -- the Top Gun ref makes more sense for this movie. Especially since there has been a flood of Star Wars movies, which blurs the possibility of the name being used as a throwback. This not only ties into her history as a pilot but helps establish the time period. It's hilarious that people bummed out about this.

Let's see how well that argument holds up in a week from now when you try using the same defense against those who dislike what they did with Mar-Vell.

@Scarilian - Doesn't matter. You know why? Because it's the MCU, not the comics. Separate universe with just enough influence so that the characters retain an identity. People need to get that through their heads.

Makes sense. Star wars was something else in the 90s. Now it's too present again.

I was unhappy about the change at first on principle, but never having read the comics I have adjusted to the new name.

The Top Gun reference works well in the context of the time and the airforce pilot origin, and seeing how original Chewie is probably the only OT character to make it out of the Star Wars sequels alive it's probably best to avoid confusions in the future.

Because I guess someone knew/suspected that after this movie "[____] the cat" would be a star in its own right.
