COMICS: DC May Still Be Moving Ahead With Watchmen Prequels; JMS And More Attached!

There have been rumblings in the past about DC further exploring the Watchmen universe without creator Alan Moore, and it's now believe that the likes of JMS, Andy Kubert, Brian Azzarello and more are involved in a prequel...

Bleeding Cool have come across some very interesting information about the status of the much talked about Watchmen prequels. Before now, all we knew was that original artist Dave Gibbons (who will soon be working with Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn on The Secret Service) would be somehow involved in the sure to be controversial comics, despite writer Alan Moore having no interest in working on the project with DC. Well, here's an excerpt from a report the site have run, and you can find more by clicking on the link below.

I was told before New York Comic Con that it might be back on and that DC were drawing up a wishlist of creators for a series of Watchmen prequel comics.. Well, I’ve now heard a lot more. Darwyn Cooke’s name is at the very top, linked to drawing two mini-series and writing another, followed by the likes of JMS, JG Jones, Andy Kubert and Brian Azzarello. Whether or not they have been approached, I don’t know, and no one’s talking, but it gives you an idea of the scale. I would also expect Dave Gibbons and John Higgins to be involved in some way.

While I thought Zack Snyder's movie adaptation was fantastic, I've never been all that impressed by the original (and in my opinion, highly overrated) comic book series by Alan Moore. Now, I'm sure that's not something many of you will agree with, but it's for that reason I have absolutely no problem with new creators tackling the characters. After all, there's nothing stopping fans enjoying the original Watchmen and ignoring these prequels altogether!

I don't think this project will see the light of day anytime soon. Darwyn Cooke did say his next project with DC was his biggest one yet and he did new Frontier so it will be big. I always thought Brian Azzarello would work well with Comedian though.

@CaptainAmerica: I think they should be integrated. We have characters like Voodoo, Grifter, and the team Stormwatch from the Wildstorm universe, plus John Constantine, and Shade the Chnging Man from Vertigo now part of the DCU proper. If done, well the Watchmen would make make for an interesting addition to the DCU, and I could care less about what Alan Moore thinks.

I dont know whether they should pursue this... I mean on the one hand, if it's done well, and it certainly has the potential to be great, then it could be a masterpiece. On the other hand, if they [frick] it up, not only have they made a bad film, but they tarnish the reputation of the Watchmen movie (which was great) and even the comic.

@CaptainAmerica hell no! If they want to integrate the Watchmen into the DCnU, make them in-universe fictional characters. Just little nods to them. Maybe have one of the Teen Titans/Young Justice members reading the Watchmen comic. That's as far as it should go.

DC just keeps making one bad decision after another. When will they learn?

This is totally market driven. The original deal was that the rights to Watchmen would revert to Moore and Gibbons after DC was done publishing the mini series.DC ha got around that by keeping Watchmen in publication for 25 years.Theres only so long you can keep rereleasing the original story so DC is going to cook up more stories, both to hold on to the publishing rights and to have fodder for more films.

The Watchmen Ultimate Cut is one of the best films ever. Leave the story alone

@ironpool007 except the majority of heroes from the watchmen universe are dead, old, or on another planet. Remember, the comic is set in the 70s on an alternate Earth, while the DCnU presumably is set "in the present", meaning a rolling timeline. It couldn't work, unless you retcon out most of the Watchmen story, which means you lose the integrity of a classic comic, and the whole reason people loved the comic is pretty much ruined. At least the characters you listed fit into the DCU without [frick]ing up too much continuity. But the Watchmen comic would not make sense in the DCnU.

integrating them into the DC universe is a terrible idea b/c it goes against the whole point of the comic

that being said, why wold anywone rule out a prequel out of hand. anything in the right hands can be good and there's a lot of backstory there to explore. hell, hire moore to right the screenplay! (he'll do it for enuff cash)

the original watchmen would be good, vintage sort of thing

As long as they don't integrate them into the normal DC universe I'm ok with it. I'm not going to bash something before I see it. That's just a silly fanboy way of looking at it. If it turns out bad, then I'll bash it.

Once again the idiots at DC are gonna squeeze money out of something that has no money in it and ruin the integrity of yet another masterpiece!

Just asking lol I think it'd be a cool idea, they wouldn't he nullified since they would be considered the first superheroes. Their books could just take part in the past and not contradict eachother. Dr Manhattan would prob be the only one left in the present timeline anyways. Tell me you would want to see a Superman vs Dr Manhattan fight. :)

they should really just leave it alone. I get that DC owns watchme and them and moore hate each other so whatever. i just wish they'd have a little more respect for moore's work. anyway not a fan of JMS these days. JG Jones perked my ears though.

@noregrets ... word yo. you might be too rational for this site, have you realized this? these people take this stuff personally. they would be against this even IF it meant they would be denied a good story. just the "concept" that the old watchmen exists on their shelf ruins even taking the chance that new, well-done piece of work could be produced. our society is doomed. the integration question is a different one, and the objection there is that the characters wouldn't be taken seriously b/c of their backstory unless you did a ridiculous retcon or something. that's different. but saying you could never make another watchmen property is just silly talk.

Well, the prequels didn't ruin the real star wars trilogy.

I thought the Hobbit was a bad idea and regardless of that, it was made anyway and I'm happy to go see it.

And if I don't want to read something, I don't have to.

So, yeah. If you liked WATCHMEN, it can't be changed. If you're just hating, please; carry on.
