COMICS: Relaunched Teen Titans To Feature New Gay Character "Bunker"

As comics continue to show as much diversity as possible word has hit that a member of the relaunched Teen Titans will be gay. His name is Bunker, and you would never think it to look at him..

Ok so you would. Bleeding Cool picked up on the following Twitter conversation between Gail Simone and Brett Booth..

Gail Simone: Tomorrow I am on a panel not listed on the schedule, WHERE ARE THE GAY SUPERHEROES, at 11:00 am, in Mezzanine 1. It’ll be great!

Brett Booth: We got at least one in Teen Titans:)

Gail Simone: Really? Who is the gay superhero in TT? Can you say?

Brett Booth: Bunker is gay (the purple guy, I know, not my first color choice!)

Brett Booth: We’re trying to make being gay a part of who he is, your gaydar should be pinged right off the bat:)

Gail Simone: Thanks, Brett! I don’t know the character, but I would love to hear about him so I can tell people to look out for him!

Brett Booth: First appearance other than the cover to 1.

According to Bleeding Cool "Bunker" is Mexican born Miguel Jose Barragan. Gay characters in comics are nothing new although you can still pretty much count em on one hand. From Booth's description should we assume that Bunker's sexuality will be very a much a part of his story as apposed to someone like The Authority's Midnighter who just happens to be gay? Guess we will find out.

I'm glad they made him fruity! Some gay guys are screamingly up front about it so that should be represented.

Oh shit, we got the fashion police up in here.

No but seriously, why isn't Beast Boy, Starfire, and Raven in the comics instead of this guy.

Gay people don't have a certain dress code, but if my mate showed up somewhere dressed like that I would say "Are you gay now"?:)

They took Bugs Bunny off the air becasue his crossdressing confuses kids. What does this do??? I'm so confused.

Having diverse characters is one thing, but having them be stereotypes is another. DC should take a look at Young Avengers if they want to know how to do a teen team right.

This is really insulting to all the transexuals, lesbians and bisexuals. I guess they don't deserve to be represented in the DC world. Evidently male homosexuals are more important than other sexual identities.

And why are the gay people always Mexicans in comics?

1) Miles Morales - half Mexican = gay
2) Bunker - Mexican = gay

Great examples of gay characters in comics are Hulkling, Wiccan and Northstar. Their sexuality is handled maturely and they're all very likeable, relatable characters. (even if you're not gay) This actually just puts me off buying the title...seeing some hyper effeminate fruity looking dude is both cliched and not a character I'm desperate to read. Sorry if that offends anyone, lol. :P

He is JUST a superhero, he happens to be a gay superhero. What difference does it make? "This is getting ridiculous". I completely agree, it's ridiculous that in this day and age anyone actually gives a shit.
MaddMonkk
MaddMonkk - 9/18/2011, 7:49 AM
I see people say they don't care and it's no big deal BUT If they turned a main title character gay, those same people would freak out. Batman or Superman being gay would kill the sales of the character and we all know it. Just make up a new gay character and kill them off when controversy or popularity drops.

I completely agree with Ror! Not all gay characters have to be closet. There are gay people who are obviously gay so why not do that in comics?

Also, if theres just one gay superhero he's gonna be awfully lonely. Also, the name "bunker" seriously? Like "I'll be in my bunk?"

his look is awesome... it's stupid that the media keeps giving us gay characters that "look like regular guys" because it's easier for the public to accept. i had a friend that came out in college, and in 24 hours he went from metallica tees & ripped jeans to pink polos & frosted hair. he looked at it as a hilarious slap in the face to all us straights that love to stereotype, and it was effin hilarious to see this 6'2" italian guy sashaying around the business department halls.

and @ MarkV - batwoman is gay and she's got her own title...

@Ror: don't they have enough already? he looks like the kind of gay character you'd see in a bad 90s comedy. the character you laugh at cause he's so fruity!

is it just me or does the whole lets diversify evrtything seem like wasted effort
they should focus on making the comics better, and then selling them
AND WHY ARE HIS SLEEVES ON EITHER SIDE DIFFERENT COLORS?
AC1
AC1 - 9/18/2011, 7:56 AM
Wow, fruity. Do gays even dress like that, or is that just a stereotype so readers can tell he's 'gay'?
And I like how he's Mexican and jumping onto a moving train without buying a ticket. That's negative stereotype number two right there... I mean they may as well have given him a pink sombrero covered in daisies with the words 'GAY AND PROUD' emblazoned on the rim of the hat.

@xenix i agree completely sadly i think that will be the point of the character ... which is why it ticks me off

fsucsu-If there were flashback stories about Dick Grayson hinting a gay lifestyle I would destroy the character (even though most people think he's gay anyway).Starman is graphically open and he won't be around for 50 years, then name but not this particlar character. I doesn't matter to me I still like Alpha Flight but it's a fad and it will cease soon enough.(making gay characters that is.)
