COMICS: Wonder Woman Losing Her Pants In The DC Relaunch After All?

COMICS: Wonder Woman Losing Her Pants In The DC Relaunch After All?

Following the controversial redesign of Wonder Woman's costume, it was believed that the iconic hero would be carrying many of the new features into the DCnU. Well, apparently not as DC have apparently given Diana her shorts back...

Earlier today, DC released the following image of a sampler comic which will hit stores next Wednesday. Among other things, "DC Comics - The New 52 #1" features cover art for every book, never-before-seen sketches, quotes from creative teams and a full 6-page preview of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's "Justice League #1."

Notice anything different? Well, the lads over at Bleeding Cool certainly did! Despite being pictured in pants on the cover to Justice League #1, Wonder Woman #1 and various other bits of promo art, it seems that DC have finally given into the fans and restored the Amazonian princess to a look far more similar to how she's previously been seen in the comics.

so does that mean Supermans going to get his underwear back too. Not like I care if he does or not. Wonder Woman looked odd with the pants. and WB need to get together and make Wonder Woman movie.

I think that's bloody stupid. The new Wonder Woman costume is cool and fresh. It's the best new costume, since they made Batman's costume more like the movie version, in the Troika crossover. They got rid of his underpants/overpants and no-one complained. They better not revert Superman back. That Justice League image with them all standing in a row is the coolest thing I've ever seen! I would have been dissapointed if they went back on these designs later on, but to go back on them before the relaunch even hits is just ridiculous. I thought they were talking about going in all guns blazing. About having balls, all or nothing. That was why they eventually decided to restart Action Comics and Detective Comics. What happened to the balls DC? They drop off?

@DukeAcureds: Agree 100%!

I prefer pants on her too, it is more contemporary. The star-sprankled pants are dated and it just looks stupid.
The new costume is a good redesign and DC should stick to it, with pants!

Seriously superman looks like his one mojito away from turning fully gay and rocking out to the village people.

I'm sick of artists trying to make WW look 'cool' and 'contemporary' It's NEVER worked and it's MISSING THE POINT. She's an ancient Greek Amazonian Goddess! They need to go BACKWARDS not FORWARDS! Give her some ancient badass mystical Amazonian Armor instead of trying (and failing) to justify her modern spandex getup which is entirely impractical for someone looking for heavy combat. STOP TRYING TO MAKER HER LOOK MODERN!!! SHE'S ANCIENT!!!

@ bobby123- "it seems to be protecting the suit more than Superman himself" What is he protecting the suit from? Its an alien suit from Krypton so it needs no protecting

I do think they will explain away Superman's suit early on that is why they are leaving it as is. Probably that it was gifted to him by Jor-El and its design was to protect him from the unknown elements or that it was the style of clothes on Krypton (maybe even for a warrior.)

And my guess is that they are going with that design because it resembles the design of the suit Snyder and company are using in the new movie.

SHORTS!!! Pants are not as durable as her skin. They will get shredded anyhow. Unless it is some unbreakable armor fabric, it doesn't make more sense. Toning down her sexiness is just taking away part of the reason everyone loves her. Why not an overcoat? Let's put Mary Marvel in a full length dress and Power Girl in a burka. Readers just can't handle sexy heroes. Right?

Oh, for the love of...

Pants. Clearly. Every other bloody member of the Justice League has managed to avoid looking like a stripper in this incarnation. Unless you're a fifteen-year-old boy who simply can't be any different, suck it up and let the woman look like something any crook would take halfway seriously.

Wonder Woman has had the most ridiculous, fetishized outfit of the first tier superheroes forever and a day. And it doesn't even suit her character. She's anything but a flirt, and comics are constantly knocking us over the head with how little she strives to attract men. So when this "strong, independent" feminist heroine makes Catwoman look sedately clad, it's a problem.

As for those actually debating what's more "practical" about superhero costumes...*raspberry*. Superman's cape gets ripped all the time. He should ditch it. Better yet, why get the costume dirty? It's his precious Kryptonian blanket...display that shit in the Fortress of Solitude instead. Supes should totally fly around saving the world in the buff...much more practical: he'd even soak up more sunrays that way. Also, Bats should ditch those stupid ears. In a fight, your helmet shouldn't have anything to catch a weapon on.

Look, these costumes are supposed to be symbols. Wonder Woman's just doesn't work for her. Gah...every time I think the genre is dragging its head out of its ass, something like this comes along...

Oopsss....this feels like deja vu with DC, where the editorial people seems NOT to be in sync with the creative guys...

seriously DC, what da heck's goin on up there??? the failure of GL the movie is a sign that u guys NEED to shape up and clean up your act. pronto!

I think the pants make more sense but either way DC should decide and stick to it. Also the choke collar on her looks lame.

While I'm at it, Superman's high collar and armor look is terrible and should be changed. I have always been in support of keeping the classic underwear look but the red belt is a happy medium that I could live with.
lanternstorm

Of course I think the bikini is hott what guy wouldn't, but the pants look like they'd be more for stealth and battle... I think maybe if they change the color of the pants to blue with white stars down the sides and the boots to red it would look even better, or incorporate the blue in there somehow... I'm not a fan of the silver. Since WW was created she's had gold in her costume such as her tiara, belt, lasso etc. Diana comes from royalty why demote her with silver.

ps. I would suggest making GL's uniform more like an energy constructed armored suit. Aquaman's suit should be more reminiscent of some one who spends time in the water... kinda like the smallville version of Aquaman. Make it sleeveless or short sleeve with no gloves but maybe emerald gauntlets. Superman def. shouldn't wear kryptonian armor. Perhaps maybe a solar suit so that he can absorb the sun's rays better.

Jesus Christ, make up your damn minds!

From a fashion standpoint, the pants honestly looked better. The shorts look ridiculous with that top. I haven't minded the pants at all nor the jacket from before as long it looks good and this doesn't. I like LanternStorm's idea of a bluer pants with the stars along the side with the red boots, that would be a more logical step up from the bikini shorts. Going from blue to black just seems strange and a lame attempt at being "cool". I'm not a fan of gold but she needs to go back to it. The silver clashes with the golden lasso in a very noticeably bad way.

I personally think that WW should have some form of shorts/underwear covered in a Greko-Roman skirt. Mostly because I think that, like capes, for a character rooted in older sensibilities something flowing on them seems to root them in older ideals.

Superman, the ulitmate boy scout
Batman, the avenging knight
Wonder Woman, the warrior princess Amazon
Captain Jack Harkness, time traveling 51st century cad

Now this is usually accomplished with a cape, but that doesn't fit her all that well unless she is armored...which I am fine with, but it is not typical of the now iconic look. It can be done with a long coat to create an older feeling character trying to fit in to modern ideals, but that look was widely panned as too militaristic or masculine. You can do really really long hair, which was done to the character in the past and worked to varying degrees, but got hard to illustrate convincingly every issue. Last is a skirt/kilt on a character and that has come with really mixed responses from fans. While a skirt+short-shorts is my favorite look for the character as it nods to her origin, it is insanely hard to make a skirt look good with pants.

My thoughts anyways. ^___^

SwingSetKnight@SugarYumYum@GoddamnSuperguy-
Totally agree with you guys. Although, even though there is a colour clash with the lasso, I think the "silver" might actually be white gold, which is pretty cool. I'm sure I've seen WW in a white gold armour, before now. Was that Stan Lee and Jim Lee's WW?
And what the Hell is with Sinestro being the Lantern of 2814? Don't you have to be a resident of the sector that you're defending?
