COMICS: Dan Slott And Stephen Wacker Discuss The End Of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700

Marvel themselves have spoiled the ending of the landmark Amazing Spider-Man #700 in an early interview with the press. After the jump, you'll find comments from Stephen Wacker and Dan Slott on the shocking events of the issue and what we should expect from The Superior Spider-Man.

It's been 50 years since we were first introduced to the Amazing Spider-Man, but in today's issue #700, Peter Parker's time as the wall-crawling superhero came to a heartbreaking end. Trapped in the dying body of his nemesis Doctor Octopus, Peter fails to reclaim his body and dies at the hands of "Spider-Man". However, before he passes away, he manages to make Otto Octavius realise that, "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" and the villain makes a vow to be both a hero and a "Superior" Spider-Man. "This is Moriarty in the head of Sherlock. This is Prince John inside of Robin Hood. This is the greatest villain inside the body of the greatest hero and trying to do good," writer Dan Slott told USA Today earlier this morning.

"We want to do Spider-Man by way of Batman — a little creepier and darker," adds editor Stephen Wacker. "It's also what the good part of our first year of Superior is about: Doc behaving in a manner he's not accustomed to. We see a more sympathetic side of Doctor Octopus. We couldn't have a Spider-Man who was running around murdering people. And I have no interest in seeing that sort of character win." So, it sounds as if this new status quo will be sticking around for at least a year; something which is sure to leave many fans of the beloved character more than a little upset.

However, despite being a fan of Peter Parker himself, Slott went on to reveal that he has been enjoying the opportunity to write Doctor Octopus as Spider-Man. ""Doc is kinda like me: He's short and schlubby. This is a guy who now gets to be in the body of Peter Parker. This opens up whole new things. He had to be a hero in his own eyes, and on some level Otto Octavius is facing that struggle not with Spider-Man's world but with the readership. How do you get more Peter Parker than that? Now the readers think he's a menace. That's exciting. On a meta level, that is Spider-Man." How do you guys feel about these changes? Do you want Peter Parker back or are you happy to give Otto a chance? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

I think it would have been better if peter did get his body back but now he had like a piece of doc ock still left in him making him more darker, this would have been cooler as we would have seen peter struggling with his new dark personality.

"It's also what the good part of our first year of Superior is about: Doc behaving in a manner he's not accustomed to."

The first year, huh?

The first year. Of presumably more-than-one years.

...

Way to render the only Marvel character I gave a shit about unreadable, Marvel. Consider this the first year you won't be getting a single red cent from me.

... Except for when I buy Scarlet Spider, because that book is the nuts and I won't deprive myself of it just to spite a bunch of talentless douchebags who won't even notice I stopped buying anyway.

But still... yeah, no more Spider-Man for me, thanks.

Hi, guys. I'm new to this site....This is insane, killing Peter Parker doesn't make a sense of what Dan Slott and Stephan Wacker are saying. What the hell they are doing!?

@0bstreperous I completely agree with you....it's better it get canceled.
SuperSomething616
SuperSomething616 - 12/26/2012, 4:36 AM
Oh and Marvel we all know Peter isn't really dead...just dormant in his own mind due to Doc Ock supplanting his personality over his...giving you a get up of jail free card...

So again I say this is all pointless!!! All you're doing is alienating your fans and possibly doing something so unforgivable that we'll never come back!!!!
SuperSomething616
SuperSomething616 - 12/26/2012, 4:39 AM
@ CaptainSpain - Totally agree Dan Slott better watch his back...cause he just painted a giant target in his back....

This will either:

A) last until amazing Spider-Man 2 comes out or

B) Don Slott leaves and the new writer undos all of this crap!!!

I think I'm the only one, but personally I like the idea of Dock Ock as Spider-man, and I definitely want to read Superior. Of course this isn't a permanent status change (what is in comics?), but I'm interested to see where Dan takes this.

people don't realize that this is TEMPORARY !!!!! know why? it's because most of you are kind of close minded, slott is trying to utilize ocks intelligence , so when peter will be back, he will be smarter, minus the "jerk" part.

Doc Ock is the greatest villain?

Someone is sure full of himself. Especially comparing himself to said bad guy.

Ock is Slotts Mary Sue all the way.

Wow. Not sure which is the bigger screwing of the fans. This monstrosity, or the horrific One More Day reboot.

All the more reason why I don't collect any Marvel comics anymore. For those of you with a little more room in your pullbox now and wanting some good storytelling to fill the void, try one of the new books from Valiant where character and story are king. Give one a shot and I doubt if you'll be disappointed. Try X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, Shadowman, or Archer & Armstrong and get in on the ground floor of a great interconnected comic universe.

@rebellion Spiderman #500 has always been one of my favourite issues, mainly because it's potentially a fantastic send off for the series. I'm glad someone else enjoys an issue I feel never gets enough praise.

The only way to tell/show Marvel that we don't want this kind of idiocy is simple... boycott the book and pirate the hell out of it. Do not pay to read this shit. If you absolutely must then borrow, pirate, or just spoil the utter piss out of it. Hurt them in the pocket book. It is the only way to exact change.

Creatively Marvel and DC are basically bankrupt at this point funneling all their resources into their film divisions, the comics don't matter anymore; they don't make the immediate return or amount of return that matters to their parent companies anymore. You want the lame-ass events, reboots, and hack-kneed writing to end then stop buying the Goddamn books.

Make them unprofitable and it will cause the biggies at Disney and WB take notice and force change. I miss the days of good writers and artists thriving and editors that had the [frick]ing brains to NOT allow bullshit storytelling like this to happen in the first place.

Marvel needs an overhaul creatively, and NOW is not looking much better to me than The New 52. Continuity is blown to hell across the board and I am [frick]ing tired of trying to keep up with nine books to follow one [frick]ing storyline. Its all just gotten to be insulting to our intelligence at this point. They know the content doesn't matter they can shovel shit inside, just so long as the fanboys keep eating it up with a spoon and buying every new event and reboot and #1 like its [frick]ing gold. Put the comic back on the shelf and walk away.

I understood that Peter Parker was still Spidey´s body in this story, but believing being himself Octopus in that body. Peter would be loaded with extra information to his brain. The Octobot only relocate the Octopus brain patterns in the body of Peter, as same as Vision used the brain patterns of Simon Williams. The real Octopus we saw in this story would die, but believing being Peter ...What a mess! In any case, also he would survive in a last attempt to transfer his consciousness to the golden octobot. Anytime, we would have a Peter Parker who is believed Octopus with his body and an Octopus believed Peter in the famous golden octobot. Sure that one day we will have to lifelong Peter ... a matter of time.

Everyone's fired up about a change to the status quo at Marvel? Really? Anyone who says Slott is a terrible writer is only saying so because he decided to do something different with a character that's been around for 50 years. He tries to mix it up and a bunch of babies scream "Not mah Spider-man!"

Clearly, he's got a plan so chill out. Go read Archie if you want a book that never changes.

Slott isn't a bad writer, he's just showing you the beginning of a story you don't like so far because you're scared of change. Slott has written some absolutely great comics and everyone pretends he hasn't because it's easier to join the media outcry.
