COMICS: Jean Grey Set To Finally Return To The Marvel Universe?

They've said that it won't be happening anytime soon again and again. However, it would appear as if Jean Grey is finally set to return to the Marvel Universe! Hit the jump for the details and a mysterious piece of artwork from Joe Quesada.

Well, it would appear as if the return of Jean Grey will be just one of the many changes set to occur in the Marvel Universe at the conclusion of Avengers Vs. X-Men. It has already been rumoured that the publisher will be doing some sort of relaunch (possibly called "Marvel Now") which won't effect continuity, but will take many titles back to #1 with new costumes and creative teams for many of their characters. However, the return of Jean Grey might be the most surprising change yet! Check out the image below (which also appears to feature the Hulk - could this have something to do with the rumoured Uncanny Avengers comic book?) and the text which accompanied it over at Entertainment Weekly.

To answer your questions: Yes, this is Jean Grey — as in, the Jean Grey who’s been absent from Marvel comics ever since dying for a second time back in the mid-00s. And yes, she is modeling her vintage blue-and-yellow X-Men outfit from her Marvel Girl days. Does this mean that the fan-favorite character is finally returning? We can only confirm that her presence in the Marvel universe will not be imaginary. This will not be part of the Ultimate line-up. She will not be a zombie hologram, like Shard on X-Factor. What could this all mean?

Well, despite it looking more like Hope Summers than Jean Grey in that image, the text above seems pretty definitive. She's coming back! The site describes this as, "an upcoming initiative by Marvel Comics that will build off the current Avengers vs. X-Men crossover and radically alter the Marvel universe as you know it." With more details promised for tomorrow, we'll be sure to keep you updated.

I agree with Marvel72.
Claremont all the way.

Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing was pretty spectacular, too.

John Byrne's Hidden Years was really fun..... but his recent stuff has been just terrible. He totally ruined the Next Men over the past several issues, and his new Trio? Sweet Jesus, what happened to the guy.

@cyked Joss Whedon ripped off Claremont word for word. Find the issues that correspond with Joss Whedon's X-Men and you'll see I am right. Claremont knows the X-Men the best.

They should hook Logan up with Jean. Oh the sparks that would fly between Scott/Emma/Logan/Jean.

Ha! You mean the least surprising. Its cool though, I like the character and it will be interesting seeing her and scott meet again. I have a feeling she will hook up with wolverine this time.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
She was supposed to be dead for [frick]ing real this time. I can't tell you how pleased I was when The Pheonix Force had nothing to do with the return of Jean Grey in AVX and instead crteated The Pheonix Five. She'll only come back to die all over again. This is beyond silly. The last death was so damned perfect. Grant's New X-Men and Pheonix - Endsong and what have you, all coinciding with the final X-Men movie? Perfect. Don't bring her back AGAIN you blasted graverobbers!!!
And the relaunch thing? Who could not have guessed that. After The New 52, it was entirely inevitable. But don't worry, Marvel's moronic legacy renumbering will put everything back to normal again.
The convolution of 616 continuity used to be it's great strength, but if they bring back Jean Grey again and kill her off again (or worse; just keep her alive indefinately) then it's no more respectable than a damned warners cartoon.

YAY.
I love Jean. But I hate when the Phoenix force possesses her. She's a character thats strong enough and she doesn't need some overpowered, boring force to make an impact.

Get rid of the Phoenix. I'm sick of seeing it.

[frick] it they should restart 616 entirely, before they rape it any further.

guys they're just relaunching at #1....no reboot. I love me some Jean, I hope that they make her look at what Scott has done and she goes to Logan...that would be tits. Oh and there is some dirty cat fight between her and Emma. :D

I didn't realize she was gone from the comics so long. I'm glad they're bringing her back.

That's another reason I disliked X-Men: TLS so much. They killed off her and Cyclops. I mean really?

Those were the original members of the first ever X-Men team... Anyways, I'm curious to see how she'll be brought back.
