Retro Review: CAPTAIN AMERICA #300

Retro Review: CAPTAIN AMERICA #300

It's that time of week again, the retro review is here. This time I talk about Captain America #300, better known as "Cap vs. the Red Skull to the Death!"

In comics, there's always the big 'final battle' issue for a solo character against his worst enemy. It usually results in either the villain's death or a new status quo for their relationship as worst enemies. Spider-Man had his 'final confrontation' with Venom in Amazing Spider-Man #375, Iron Man had his final battle with Iron Monger in Iron Man #200, Thor had his final battle with Loki in The Mighty Thor #432, etc. I'll get to all those eventually, but this time I'm talking about Captain America's battle 'to the death' with his worst enemy, the Red Skull.

One of the things the Captain America film failed to do was develop the relationship between Cap and Skull. In the comics, the Red Skull had always considered Cap to be his equal. In the film, he treats him more like a nuisance. This comic was the perfect way to end "a war that begun 40 years ago." Blows are felt, it's good stuff. The writing is just fantastic, some of the best writing I've ever read in a comic. I especially like when Skull says, "Two gods locked in raging battle, for all eternity!" Then Cap replies, "We are not two gods! Just two tired old men!" This issue deserves an animated adaption, it's comic book drama at its best. I like how Red Skull doesn't care about dying, he just wants to see Cap lowered to his level. Reminds me of the Batman/Joker dynamic.

Characters on the verge of killing their most hated enemy is something we've all seen a thousand times, but here it feels more fluid and dramatic. Cap saying how he hates the Red Skull for his evil and then the panels with him about to land the killing blow is just dramatic. What follows is a fantastic scene of Skull getting angry cause he wanted Cap to kill him. These characters were just written great. The actual fight is in essence, a fight to the death. There are no beams or capes, it's just two men punching each other out of commission, all the while with great dialogue. The death of the Skull is climatic, and the perfect closure to there 40 year feud.

Overall, Captain America #300 is the definition of 'battle to the death.' The writing by Micheal Ellis is some of the best I've ever read in a comic. The art by Paul Neary holds up pretty well, considering this comic came out way back in 1984. (The year of Big Brother, whoever gets this reference gets a thumbs up from me.) Cap and Skull would have more battles later on, but none would compare to the battle in this comic. It's definitely the greatest Captain America comic I've ever read.

10/10.

Heh, sounds like an awesome comic. :) I'm actually reading some retro Cap Comics ATM in a trade paper back, called Captain America War & Remembrance. This one:

So far it's been pretty good. Cheesy at times, but still good for the most part. Also I thought it was funny at this time Sharon Carter had died? LOL. He'll start being remorseful over her dying and I'm like don't worry dude she'll come back in a bit... lol.

I have a few of the issues leading to #300. Mark Gruenwald has always been underrated as a writer. His run on Cap was fantastic...other than Cap-Wolf.
And yes, don't leave out how twisted the Skull was terrorizing the people in Cap's life, dressing Nomad as Bucky, and mutating/aging his sole child into adulthood and manipulating her to follow in his steps.

I recommend reading the twelve issue limited series wherein the Squadron Supreme take over their Earth in a seemingly benevolent way!

I should've missed this one, well aside of the Lee/Kirby issues, such retro issue is nearly impossible to find in where I live indeed. But it's definitely in my must read list by now.

superotherside: What issues does the TPB collect? Been eying that for a long time. :)

One of the best Cap stories I ever read maybe one of the best comic stories I ever read. It was the first time I had ever read the Skulls background and how Hitler created him and eventually came to fear his own monster. I've always felt that the true Red Skull died in that issue. That storyline made me a Cap fan for life.

This was it!!! THE END of the Captain America comics. What I read later, was this was suppose to be the end of Captain America comics. He was going the way of the Sub Mariner, ... lingering and wandering through comics limbo or in the Marvel universe until someone comes up with something to do with the character.

Guenwald started just after this book and took it upon himself to make Cap relateable, exciting and worth reading for the coming 1990s.

superotherside, enjoy that collection, my friend! It was basically my introduction to Cap, other than one or two issues involving Batroc stealing the shield. Look over at my avatar to see the effect War and Remembrance had on me... ;-)

SentielofLiberty Yeah, I am. I really like Cap comics need to get more of em. Nice Avatar too. ;) You're getting the recent Cap comics right? They are awesome. Personally the best ongoing series ATM IMO. Steve is soooo conflicted, a worried. It's interesting to see the perfect man slightly terrified and unsure of what to do. :) BTW do you have a twitter?

Definitely one of the all-time great Cap stories. I haven't read this one in quite a while. Thanks for giving me a reason to pull this classic out and enjoy it again!

superotherside, I haven't been keeping up with recent Cap stuff so much. I buy collections when they come out, but with all the deaths, rebirths, etc, I just found it all so confusing. You think the recent stuff is worth buying? Which title, specifically.

I do have Twitter. I'm actually still trying to figure it out. I feel like I should be using it to tell youngsters to stay off my lawn or something!

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Hope you see this....
