Neil Blomkamp Is Latest Director Attached To The Hobbit

Some very credible sources put this high on the believability scale!

TheOneRing.net is is almost, kind of officially reporting that District 9 director Neil Blomkamp will helm The Hobbit. The site goes on to say:

However, we did receive a spy report that stated it as cold, hard, unsurprising fact. We haven’t been able to get a verification but the tip stated some other information on the side that fits with other info from other sources. A bunch of little pieces of information, some rock solid, some unclear, start to form a big picture that looks like it could have Blomkamp in it.

While MGM and Warner Brothers want Peter Jackson to direct both Hobbit movies, Jackson feels he would only be competing with himself from his work on the LOTR trilogy. The director felt he could keep a safe distance with his good friend, Guillermo del Toro, directing. Since that fell through, many names have popped up on the radar, but Blomkamp filming would work best for Jackson due to their previous excellent working relationship.

TheOneRing also states that, despite MGM's financial instability, shooting should begin in early 2011 which is all the more reason to get a director confirmed. The official announcement should come at Comic-Con if not sooner.

I doubt we'll hear anything official until SDCC but I think this would work well with Jackson guiding him.

Wasn't the reason del Toro left was because MGM couldn't fund it? It seems like no matter who the director is, it's still a problem.

I would believe this to be true.

Blomkamp is Peter Jackson's protege. I'm sure Jackson
recommended him to the studio.

...oh yeah, and this is a damn good choice IMO.
Blomkamp is one of the top young directors in Hollywood.

Well thats good news, even though DISTRICT 9 was hardly original, it was a good watch, and a good movie!

(Hardly the best movie of '09 though lol)

But he should get THE HOBBIT, talented guy!

Still, can't see how this HOBBIT can touch LOTR's though, but then again don't know much about it till i read the book?

GRIF @ lol!

This would be awesome if it was true. I still think the halo short he did was one of his best.

It just doesn't make sense. Peter Jackson directed the Lord of the Rings, it only makes sense for him to direct the Hobbit.

LEEE talking about originality? That's rich.

Blomkamp would do excellent work as director of the Hobbit if only judging by D9.

Sharlto Copley for Bilbo

And +1 to Phin's comment. Anyone who loved Avatar should not criticize ANY movie for having a lack of originality.

We'll see... we'll see...

Blomkamp is good judging from District 9 (I loved it) but he's still considered untested (with only one mid-range/mid-budget movie under his belt), PJ's support or not, so we'll see what happens.

That being said, it someone offered it to me, I wouldn't turn it down; even knowing I'm not the most qualified director for the job...
