Nicolas Cage Says Ghost Rider Sequel Deviates from the Original Movie!

The actor goes in-depth explaining how the follow up to his 2007 original film, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will "mess with your mind" different in tone & more. Check it out!

Taking a day off from filming his return as Johnny Blaze in the foreseen Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, actor Nicolas Cage has been praising the sequel and it's duo directors Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor in several interviews today. And in an excerpt from his chat with IO9's Meredith Woerner, Cage explains how the sequel will differ in tone, and more.

"It is a completely different film. The first one, which I won't denigrate — I liked the first one, but it was almost like a fairy tale. Almost like a Disney fairy tale interpretation of Faust. This one is completely re-conceived, it's not even connected to the first one, it's a different origin sequence. But I think it will be a brand new experience. It has more adrenaline involved in the film making process itself, and in the movie when you see it. Again, I think the stuff we're able to get into with Ghost Rider is going to be a lot more abstract and not like anything you've seen before. So I'm very excited by it."

In the full interview, Nicolas Cage reiterates a few things posted earlier today, but head over to IO9 for it as you please.

Anyhow, starring opposite Cage, Idris Elba, Ciaran Hinds, and Christopher Lamber, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance follows Johnny Blaze, as hes hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is then recruited by a sect to take on the devil, who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on his birthday. And the sequel hits theaters in 3D February 17, 2012.

So it is basically like The Wolverine. Same Actor, different continuity?

I like the sound of that... except for the part when he says that he likes the first one. But the fact that this is an entirely new, re-conceived version, makes me happy. And i really like Cage.

Nick Cage must have sold his soul to the devil, to continue his acting career.
Seriously how does this dude still get work? He is just awful.
As you can tell, I'm not his biggest fan.
They should reboot it with Jensen Ackles playing the lead(Danny or johnny, he's perfect for both).

First of all, he is not a bad actor. Recently he just appear in bad movies.

Second, he is kinda broke, so he is trying to pay the bills.

Finally, he is an aging actor who is in an industry where 3d and cgi are more in demand than great scripts that require his experiences.

Ghost Rider is the only Marvel movie I have never finished watching. It was just too painful. And I'm including the first attempts at Cap and Hulk.

It should be more Hellboy in tone (The Comics), but then again I've only read a few Ghost Rider books.

so it's sorta a reboot, but with the same actor... well, let's see what happens this time. Cage was kinda right about one thing in the first film, for a GR film, it was mild... barely had any real fire and brimstone that it should have had.... A part of me hopes it'll be a bit like the first couple of seasons of Supernatural with a GR slant: more horror and less namby-pamby stuff.

In any case, I'm beginning to think that a good Ghost Rider movie should be an R-rated horror-fest.... maybe have Guillermo del Toro do it if they decide to make another one.

I like Cage as an actor and have enjoyed most of his movies (he's still to top Raising Arizona in my opinion) but I find myself caring less and less about this film.

No matter what gets filmed, it's still going to be neutered into a PG-13 kid's movie that panders to studio execs rather than the paying public and the character's fanbase.

I honestly wish Nic Cage had just walked away from this...

Y'know what's funny?
The complete hatred of the idea that Routh would be recast in the Supes reboot, but nooobody seems overly bothered about Wolverine and Ghost Rider at all. Lol

I don't want Routh in the new film at allll, wasn't into Superman Returns but just thought that was interesting.

Mess with my mind? The first one messed with my mind! I kept thinking "how can a character look so good but be so shit?". It didn't make sense!

FukkMaturity - very good point! Although I DO have a problem with both Cage and Jackman. Despite their enthusiasm, Cage is just wrong for the role and Hugh is too old and has had his day. It's time for them both to do what's best for the character and let some else take over.

re: Guason
After watching that video I think someone should cast him as a crazed villain in a comic book movie. Maybe Riddler or Lex

Cage is definitely a great actor, but he is not Johnny Blaze!:)
The first movie should have just go with more serious script! [frick] the funny parts!
Also the villains should have been more monstrous (The villains were what they were because all the money go to the design of Ghost Rider)! They shouldnt have made it at all if they knew they were not going to bring justice to its villains!

I really hope that this second one doesnt let me down so much!

Ah, see this is good news because THE FIRST ONE WAS TERRIBLE. Just wanted to make sure everyone was clear on that.

Fingers crossed that those crazy Crank directors can manage to work around a PG13 rating and produce something crazy and violent, if nothing else.

He wasn't bad, but the dialogue for the movie was bad, which is why it wasn't up-to-par. And bad casting. Not Cage, but the dude who played the son's devil and all the demon dudes who join him were all terrible, completely corny and unbelievable. The actor who played the Devil wasn't bad, but they coulda got somebody better.
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 12/1/2010, 10:01 AM
Cage is a good actor with hit and miss movie quality.

Do not try and debate the fact that the first movie was terrible. It was. The visuals on Ghost Rider were the only real redeeming quality. By the way, when you've got Sam Elliot and Peter Fonda as supporting actors in a movie about a flaming skeleton on a motorcycle fighting demons, you flat out should not be able to make a bad movie. And yet, Mark Steven Johnson managed to do it. Amazing.
Vital
Vital - 12/1/2010, 10:12 AM
Haha Mass, I thought the visuals were bizarre in that film. Ghost Rider looked amazing going up the building and coming out of the water with the flames and what not. Top notch. THEN, when you see just him as Ghost Rider with his skull head (no bike scenes), he looks so fake. Terrible cgi for GR's head, especially when he does the look into my eyes thing (Care Bear Stare lol). So parts of the film looked really good, then other parts looked as if I was watchin Starship Troopers 2.
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 12/1/2010, 10:46 AM
@Chad Vital - The Starship Troopers films. What a great comparison. In the first one the effects were the only part worth watching. I hated every human character. I was rooting for the aliens by the end of the film.

@chad"The actor who played the Devil wasn't bad, but they coulda got somebody better."....thats was Peter Fonda..Easy rider, the wild angels...an oscar nominated actor,..and in the AMA Motorcycle hall of fame, for his support of sturgis bike rally, and charity rides all over the world.he is the real deal.thats why they used him.And sam elliot, well he has been quoted as sayin "ive spent my entire life on a horse or a motorcycle." and EVERYBODY here knows cage is a diehard comic, and motorcycle fan.

Im not a fan of nick cage, thought i loved him in kick-ass. the first ghost rider was ehh, not sure how i feel about this one. @Chad Vital- ya i agrees some of the effects were [frick]ing sick until you got to see the flaming skull up close, it looked fake
Vital
Vital - 12/1/2010, 11:24 PM
It's like they ran out of money in some scenes so they went all tv cg on us lol.

Jon- I said he was good, but they coulda got somebody more devil-like. The best devil incarnation I've seen has been Peter Stormare as Lucifer in Constantine. I don't think anybody can beat that version of the devil.
