Hasbro CEO Talks About G.I. Joe 2

CEO of Hasbro toys talks about the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, Hints that director Stephen Sommers is no longer involved, and how the sequel will stand on its own...

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner was recently questioned by MTV NEWS about the search for a director to helm the sequel to the 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra. Goldner answered with this:

"It's in the works! We have a really good script and we're right now talking to a number of directors," he told us. When asked if the director search officially puts original helmer Stephen Sommers out of the running, Goldner replied: "I don't know if I can comment. I don't know if the studio has commented yet. But we're certainly talking to some people."

Goldner was also questioned about how the sequel would stand on its own after the not so critically successful first outing:

"There is a really great idea in the second 'G.I. Joe,'" he said. "In many ways, it'll be great for the people who saw the first one, but you don't need to have studied every element of the first one to enjoy the second. We've made sure that that's the case."

I love the franchise... I wasn't so happy about the flick but I enjoyed it... If they put a little more effort on the sequel it'll be awesome. The one thing I couldn't enjoy was Marlon Wayans, he was exactly what Jar Jar Binks was to Star Wars.

I love this quote........ "but you don't need to have studied every element of the first one to enjoy the second."

study every element???? That's funny; how complicated a film did he think it was? GI Joe loses often (bye bye Eiffel tower, hi Zartan as President) and Cobra sort of, but not really, forms. The. End.

I was very disappointed by the first. As a fan of the toy line more than anything. I hope they capture more of the "fantasy version of an army" feel and keep an overall promising cast. especially Rachel Nichols. :D

I liked the first film because it had the cheesy qualities of the show and wasn't too serious. There was some decent action (FX are bad in a lot of parts though) but it had too many poor elements like the Baroness & Duke romance, an unrecognizable Cobra Commander and Marlon Wayans and Tatum as Duke. I don't hate Tatum, but he's not Duke and should be recast or they need to do away with Duke an introduce Flint. I am actually really looking forward to a sequel, I think.

They MUST have a Sgt. Slaughter cameo (he had a naming rights issue in 2009 so he couldn't be in the first film which is why Fraser got a cameo). I think they need someone like Terry Crews for Roadblock and someone like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for Alpine. Jessica Biel as Lady Jaye would be awesome and they must have Shipwreck, Gung Ho and maybe Major Blood in the film too.

This is the type of film where using wrestlers & athletes actually would enhance the film. This ain't gonna be Platoon or Saving Private Ryan so they should have fun with it.

Glad they are making a sequel , now all they need to do is change a few things like:
1.get rid of Tantum and Waynes, replace them with Stalker, Flint, lady Jaye, and Beachhead
2. get rid of Breaker and Heavy Duty, he is just a poor mans Roadblock anyway.
3. undo the whole Baroness is Cobra Commanders sister and make her back into a badgirl oh and put a hood on Commander.
4. Add in the Dreadnoks and Firefly
5. no booster suits
6. Use Gi Joe: Resolute as a model

I think Vin Diesel could be a good Beachhead. He's not a good actor, but he doesn't have to be for this. They need to make the costumes more unique for each character. Even if it's just an Army uniform for one guy, while another has a Navy uniform or Air Force. They should take advantage of the different colors & patterns (or hats like Shipwreck). The Batman uniforms sucked.

Terry Crews for Roadblock. The Rock for Alpine. I'd like to see Bazooka in the film. Maybe Steve Austin for Gung Ho (because I said so!)?

The only thing that can make this good, is to REBOOT it.
The first was horrible, with NOTHING good about it. Absolutly a bad movie, begining to end. Bad story, bad actors, bad director, bad everything.

It sucked.

There's no reason to start all over. They can reboot it and have it be a sequel. They can just use different characters for the Joes, but keep Quaid as Hawk and then go with Cobra in full force (with a new mask) since they were set up already. If they make it more episodic that a direct sequel (like the cartoon) then it won't matter that they do.

Oh god just let this franchise die and start again in few years. For now the current movie in my heart and on my shelf is GI Joe: Resolute, [frick] this movie and the first.

There are no layers of the first that needs to be studied, lol. It was a one-sided script with little to no plot twists.. but rather, holes. Heh, it was still enjoyable, though.

If it's true they need to replace Tatum. He's absolutely horrible as Duke. I wouldn't go as far as to say Rise Of Cobra was "a load of crap", but it wasn't a good movie either.

I don't care what anyone says. I really enjoyed "Rise of Cobra". Tatum was horrible, but the rest of the film was just fine. It was enjoyable and that's all that matters.

I saw in the theatre when it came out and don't really remember much now that I think about it. Normally things like this I'll buy on DVD/blue-ray but never bothered w/ GI JOE, maybe if I find it in the $3-5 bin somewhere

Enough with the hate already. It's no damn worse than Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen. I'd like to see the Dreadnoks and Shipwreck in the next film.

Stumblin - 2/22/2011, 4:57 PM
Transformers is a guilty pleasure of mine, but it pretty much nailed my expectations besides a few nit picks here and there.

GI Joe however was just a butchery of a story, zero pacing, terrible CGI, and the acting...is self explanatory. I'm not saying the acting was terrific in either Transformers but definitely was better than Rise of Cobra. I will definitely not be wasting my money on this sequel.
