Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern Transformation Analyzed

Let's take a moment to analyze Ryan Reynolds' big "transformation scene" from the new Green Lantern trailer!

If you're like me, than this week was a huge week in movies, what with trailers for both Cowboys & Aliens and Green Lantern hitting the 'net. Already, the debate is on among many of you comic book movie fans about everything from Ryan Reynolds' seemingly comedic portrayal of Hal Jordan, to the special effects seen in the trailer, to the look of Green Lantern's costume.

While there's nothing that can be really be said about the way Reynolds portrays Hal--c'mon, you knew you were going to get a little humor with Van Wilder in the lead--and the effects are likely to go through some polishing before the movie's release, let's take a moment to analyze what's going on with Reynolds' transformation into Green Lantnern.

(Note: A big shout out to ScreenRant for the use of their screencaps. Read their detailed shot-by-shot analysis of the suit HERE.)

What's immediately noticeable to comic book fans—besides the muscle tone look of the "material" of the costume, which has already been discussed at length since the first image of the costume was released--is that Reynolds' Green Lantern costume appears to be a combination of both Hal Jordan's costume and Kyle Rayner's. In the comics, Jordan wears white gloves and green boots that only come up to mid-calf, whereas the costume seen in the trailer has Rayner's green gloves and knew-high boots. What's also extremely apparent is that the costume is emanating not from Hal's ring, but seemingly from within Jordan himself. The ring sparks only at the beginning and then the energy emanates out from the Green Lantern symbol that forms on his chest. Reynolds even seems to be holding his breath or suppressing a burp, as if the costume was bubbling up from inside of him.

To me, these differences between the movie costume and the comic book costume are minor, but I know that some of you feel differently about it. Please feel free to chime in below and tell me what you like and what you don't like about the costume and the transformation sequence!

And, just in case you were living in a cave these past couple of days since its release, here's the new Green Lantern trailer once again...

I wanted to see the trailer in the movie theaters before I cast my final judgement, but after seeing this in slo-mo, I have to admit, It DOES look pretty awesome. Didn't even notice the white gloves were missing when I watched the trailer. Never was a big deal to me. At least they have the "|O|" lantern and not the "(O)" Lantern, if anyone understands that. Thanks for the slo-mo.

The costume is oceans better in the trailer than it was on the cover of EW. So i'm happy with it and however he transform as long as it's not emanating from his ass.

It's fine, really. Most of 'em whiners are just the typical nit-pickin' fanboys who won't settle for anything other than their own versions.

I love the trailer. I love everything about this movie. The suit is genius. If I had one complaint it would be the squared mask but maybe theyll trim/cut it. I loved how Tomar Re looked and Sinestro looked and everything.
The CGI will get polished. And the tranformation is cool! I wouldnt rule out the transformation to have some tweaks in the future. I wouldnt even be suprised if the suit gets tweaked a bit like with the Batman series in the sequels. Perhaps the the color tone will be toned a bit down even.
This film is going to be great! Absolutely stunning!

I enjoyed the costume. The mask it's a little silly, but I like the texture and stuff like that. I like the alien look,I like the green arms, all that stuff.

What I DON'T like it's that transformation. It reminds of Smallville,Power Rangers and Spawn.

Oh yeah, Intruder's certainly right about one thing; THE MASK SUCKS ASS. But the rest is okay with me so far. I gotta say though, Sinestro's outfit is way cooler. Better defined. But that could be because Hal hasn't gotten the hang of creating his suit any better.

ASTONISHING job, phoe1!!! Now THAT'S a better looking mask ;)

frogsplash45- You do have a point. Here's hoping they do tweek the mask before the release. Thing is, with all the promotional stuff they've done with the actual mask so far, i highly doubt it.

I say Thee Nay

How are you judging it if you haven't watched the movie?

Some still haven"t figured out that they have plenty of time to work on things in post-production still. It's like talking to a brick wall or little kids who refuse to listen.

Intruder@ Reynolds is a solid actor, don't know where your issue is there. If you don't believe me watch Buried. The trailer is just the surface of what is going to be in the movie and it would suffice to say he is delivering the lines that were written. Don't rag on him because you think they are too comedic. Rag on the writer and director.

Personally, I've always like the updated look of Rayner's suit (I prefer the classic mask). I think the way it suddenly appears could be an unintentional nod to the basic GL philosophy: Willpower. Hal's literally 'willing' his suit into existence. The ring serving as a sort of battery and his imagination as the tool-weapon maker.

skidz - 11/18/2010, 12:27 PM
If Geof Johns is excited to see this movie, shouldn't that be a relief for people with doubts? He DID skyrocket GL's popularity, after all. I wonder what the other GL suits are gonna look like.

@Phoe
Way better!

And i have no gripe with the costume. It is what it is. If someone drew it like that in a comic, people would think it looks sick.

But I am worried about the CGI. But then again, the other corps look amazing while his suit sometimes looks lackluster. so who knows, it might not actually be done

But overall, I'm on the fence about this movie. I can't seem to make a judgement either way. Guess I've just gotta wait and see
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 11/18/2010, 12:42 PM
Intruder@ I think there are a few scenes in the trailer that show Hal's struggle with what has been put on him and I think he looks very good in those scenes. I just think there is way too much we haven't seen yet to judge it off of some comedy lines that he delivers in the trailer. The trailer clearly shows the opposite side of that spectrum as well. I guess those scenes didn't make an impression on you like they did me.

@breakUbatman

I'm just saying that it is SUPER ANNOYING when people trash a movie before seeing it.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/18/2010, 12:56 PM
Ranger14- True, like i said on the Cowboys and Aliens thread yesterday, Campbell should have taken notes from Favreau on how to make a better trailer. Whatever Campbell rounded up to showcase in his trailer was probably what HE thought would sell with the general audience, which pretty much can be summed up to regular ol' Ryan clowning about. But he really didn't show us what Hal's all about as a character, which i'm sure Ryan will deliver in the end. I find him to be a great actor when he puts his clowning aside. At least i hope i'm not wrong on that, cause that would suck ass.

Don't like the ribbed condom look of the costume. The mask looks plain goofy. A trailer should make you want to see the film. For me this one doesn't do the job . I am a huge Green Lantern fan since 1959 when I bought Showcase #22 for a dime (I still have it). I don't mind change but I do mind Cheesy and this film just looks Cheesy. I will wait and rent it most likely rather than shell out ten bucks in a theater.

I think this is gunna be an awesome film, the costume is amazing (much better than the first reveal thing), only problem is that the mask is kinda distracting because it looks so chunky compared to his face when the rest of the costume is form fitting, and it makes his eyes look tiny.

Idk if anyone else noticed this, but the green flame effect when the title came up at the end... reminded me of the blue flame effect on The Dark Knight... perhaps the layout style is hinting at something like the JLA after all, or maybe i'm just looking too far into it.

The only GOOD design of the Hal Jordan's mask looks like a chevron, a caret sign upside down.

The Green Flame effect is a nod to the original Green lantern Alan Scott.
