Terrence Howard Suggested 'Iron Man' for Robert Downey Jr.

The original James 'Rhodey' Rhodes tells E!Online that he recommended our dear Robert Downey Jr. for Tony Stark in the original Iron Man. Check it Out!

The Oscar-nominated actor, Terrence Howard turned up for a cocktail reception at the Terrazza Martini tent. Promoting his upcoming biopic, Winnie. And E!Online got Howard to talk about a matter that's been dogging him for the past two years now; being replaced by Don Cheadle for the box office hit, Iron Man 2.

"I haven't had a chance yet but I will see Iron Man 2," the thesp told E! News in his best Mandela voice.

"Despite the customary idea or thought that there's some controversy, it was a wonderful split and I know that they've done well," Howard claimed. "Robert Downey Jr. was born to play that part and it was wonderful that that part has given him the stature that he was supposed to hold before."

"For me to have recommended him, it means all the more so that I helped someone get to where they are supposed to go," the Crash star continued. "Marvel and I are now talking about doing some other things. And Don Cheadle wanted to play that part before I wanted to play it, so everything is very well."

DCMF: It would make sense that he recommended our dear RDJ, being that Howard was the first actor cast in the original movie. But one thing that I noticed about Howard's performance compared to Cheadle's was that Cheadle was more down-home, while Howard was too uptight. The War Machine that I remember from the tv series and assume the comics, was that Rhodey was loose & commanding. And while Howard did good portraying the role that the script provided, Iron Man 2 brought the real Rhodey out...to me.

But I really wish we could have had the same Rhodey that saved Tony from the desert, but....

And whatever those other things him & Marvel are discussing, I hope it doesn't involve anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That would be way too odd.

If DON don't wanna do the WAR MACHINE spin off, HOWARD should do it!!!

I thought Cheadle was great and gave a far better performance than Howard! However, Terrence did a decent enough job in the first movie so he deserves the credit for that at least!

I wonder who else he could play in the Marvel Universe!? Whoever it is, it would have to be nothing to do with Cap, Thor or Iron Man because that would just be too close to where he's already been in the movie universe!

"I prefered Howard over Cheadle...Cheadle was a waste of dialogue until his very last lines imo" :)

WTF???? DON (like ROCKWELL) owned IRON MAN 2!!!

Unlike SLJ that SUCKED! : D

I definitely prefer Howard to Cheadle. Cheadle is like the black Keanu Reeves to me; he was almost totally emotionless in IronMan2 -- I liked what they did with his character, but the the actor in this film, not so much.

@Tea

Dude, i thought he owned the part too! He was a character torn between his loyalty to his government and his friend. CHEADLE embodied that perfectly from the moment he walked into the hearing and told TONY, "I'm here, it's done, let's get over it."

Personally, i thought he did a great job......especially during the Birthday party scene. What did you find dull?

@LEEE777 Personally I just don't see a War Machine movie working out. IDK, it just seems like Tony & Rhodey are meant to be in the same movie. It's like if you just have a Rhodey story, we would miss the charm & humor of Tony Stark. But maybe since I never read any of the solo comics, I wouldn't know.

He shouldn't be doing any MARVEL or DC films and just do like an indie comic film imprint.

Howard should play Terry Fitzgerald in the SPAWN reboot.:)

I really didn't see an outstanding performance from any of the actors in Iron Man 2. Robert Downey Jr. was boring. His care-free, bad boy attitude worked in pt. 1 but in pt. 2 it was kinda old & played out. Gwyneth Paltrow was too emotional. Samuel Jackson was too rushed. Scarlet Johanson was over rated. So was Mickey Rourke. Overhyped. So I really didn't see a need to replace Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle. Cheadle was behind the War Machine mask longer than expected.

Howard is a good actor, but just doesn't fit the role of War Machine. I preferred Cheese-doodle I mean Cheadle :)

A War Machine spin off would be lame.

Ha, imagine if Howard played Black Panther. That would be teh LOLz :)

They timing of this may be incidental, but it still rings of jealousy on Howards part. Y'know: 'Cheadle's performance may have been better, but I got Robert the part!' Incidental, but snotty.

no way Terrence Howard should play Black Panther

i do agree with Tea that Terrence Howard got better charisma than Cheadle.

@jazz- i dont think terrence should play black panther i think it should be djimon hounsou. he would be perfect and he knows how to fight. they need an athentic african for black panther not just some american especially a half white half black man you know what im saying. so im going to respectfully disagree with your choice tho terrence is a very good actor....that being said its not fair to say terrence was too uptight in the first iron because that was the first movie. we dont know what he could have been like in the second because he didnt play him! he could have done a better job but i think he did good, i like him better then don cheadle. don is also a good actor. to me don didnt look that good in the war machine suit terrence would have looked better personally
odie00
odie00 - 5/17/2010, 2:28 PM
@fanboii.. they should have made her russian first off like her whole backstory is a russain spy, from russia. and she was just some american agent for nick fury, that was one of my biggest disappointments in the movie and im not that crazy about black widow to begin with

I agree with LEEE, Teabag, fanboiii AND odie00. And here is how:

LEEE - SLJ was wasted on that movie.

tea - Howard was a much better Rhodey

fanboiii - yes, they both lacked emotion and seemed pretty flat throughout the movie. Well ... Scar Jo not as "flat" ;-)

odie00 - Agreed! Where the fcuk was the God Damn Russian accent!!!!?????

Neither actor was Jim Rodes IMO but both did a good job. Howard isn't good for a Military Role... He's perfect when it comes to playing normal dudes though. Cheadle was waaaay more likeable.

Howard is not good at playing badasses. Hes awsome at playing pimps and hustlers.... check out his movies.

No way could he be Spawn... he sounds like a girl.

In the first iorn man when he was yelling Tony! Tony! he sounded like a fruit cake calling out to his boyfriend.

And no way on earth should Howard play black panther... Thats just silly hahahahahahahahahahahahahah

WarMachine doesn't need his own movie... It would be overkill. I think its okay for a hero to play a supporting role. It adds to thier charm.

francesco mattina work is f-ing sick

@odie00

did u even read my comment i said "No way Terrence Howard should play Black Panther". meaning i dont want him to even play Black Panther in a live action movie.

the only best people that can play Black Panther in my eyes are Djimon Hounsou, Chiwetel Ejiofor or Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Don Cheadale is ten times the actor than Terrance Howard. And for those of you on hear that say other wise are idiots. You people probably think that Battlefield Earth was the greatest movie of all time.

It's going to take some time to get used to Cheadle. I liked the dynamic between Downey Jr. and Howard in the first film. Plus, I thought Terrance looked alot more like Rhodey than Cheadle did.

Cheadle did a fine enough job, but I wish that more time could have been spent on the relationship between his Rhodey and RDJ's Tony.

@ teabag
what movie were you watching? Cheadle play a much better Rhodey than Howard by far. i.e. Howard sounded to feminine to me and couldn't be taken seriously as someone with authority. Plus he was a whiner. He sounded like a little bitch throughout that whole movie.
