JUSTICE LEAGUE Director Zack Snyder Says He's "Pretty Excited" About James Gunn's DCU Plans

Justice League director Zack Snyder has briefly commented on DC Studios and James Gunn's DCU plans, admitting he's excited about the reboot but also intrigued to see where it takes Superman. Check it out!

Zack Snyder launched the DC Extended Universe in 2013 with Man of Steel. No one knew the plan was to build a shared world at the time, of course, and it wasn't until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came around that we got an idea of what the filmmaker had planned.

The slate Warner Bros. announced never really materialised and the Justice League saga surely isn't one we need to recap!

Snyder did get to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut in 2021, though it's since become clear that his association with the DC brand has ended. The DCEU ended with Orm eating a cockroach in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's post-credits scene, and it's now down to James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios to reboot the DCU.

Talking to CBR about the release of Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, Snyder offered some brief comments on those DCU plans.

"You know, I'm a pretty open book," he said. "I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I'm down. I'm in. Let's see what happens. I'm pretty excited[...] I mean, we're going to get Superman pretty soon, so we'll see what that's like."

Talking last November, Snyder shared his take on why his vision for the DCEU clashed with what Warner Bros. wanted from the brand.

"I never looked at it as the job, 'Oh, I’m the architect of DC. I need to create entertainment for DC that sells toys and that is for the masses and fun for everyone.' I didn’t care [about that]," he admitted. "I liked Batman, I liked Superman, I wanted to make something cool. You picked the wrong guy if you wanted a product."

DC Studios has made its intention to move on from the DCEU clear, recasting Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and essentially scrapping anything that Gunn didn't previously have his hands on (explaining why, so far, only actors from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are returning).

For what it's worth, Gunn has shared his support for Snyder's post-DCEU career saying earlier this year, "He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He's a great guy. Again, he seems really happy with the massive world building he's doing now."

Many fans remain optimistic that Snyder could be asked back to finish his Justice League trilogy, perhaps as an animated movie or comic book. We're not banking on it, but stranger things have happened...

@NakedAvenger - to be fair

He keeps being asked about it , especially in interviews so he has to respond which was the case here.

@NakedAvenger - you do realize he gets asked these questions right? Also it may have not “worked out” in terms of reception on BvS (MoS and ZSJL were received alright) but MoS and BvS both made good money.

MoS: $670,145,518 WW
BvS: $874,362,803 WW

Now could you argue that BvS underperformed? Of course - it should have crossed into billion dollar territory but did the studio still make a good ass profit? Yeah. They did. Unless you think 300 million profit is bad.

WB would KILL for returns like that right now. I loved Gunn’s Suicide Squad film but it lost WB hundreds of millions of dollars lol. Here’s to hoping his Superman is much more successful.

@TheLobster - same, I preferred Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie compared to Ayer’s but it made little money. Granted I think releasing it same day on HBOMax hurt it too, but I still don’t think it was going to make a huge profit.

@Arthorious - day and date release definitely hurt the film but jfc it performed reaaaaally bad lol

Well , I’m glad Snyder and i atleast agree on this…

I always forget him & Gunn know each other since Snyder directed the Dawn of The Dead remake in 2004 ( it was his feature debut) and James wrote it.

Anyway , I’m getting more excited for the DCU day by day pretty much so hope it turns out well!!.

"... if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct"

Oh the irony! If he actually believed that he would have paired Man of Steel with the Dark Knight films and both he and the studio would be way better off. Is he not the same guy who turned Batman into a sociopathic murderer and unhinged brute and Superman into a bi-polar basket case in BvS?

@Forthas - There’s nothing wrong with Synder’s take on these IPs. The man said he wanted to make something cool and he did. His version of Batman & Superman are the type of versions I prefer. I prefer a Batman who’s more frightening, unhinged and lethal exactly as Batman should be because he’s a criminal and vigilante (Bruce said so himself to Aflred in BvS) he knows exactly what he is. Superman is also technically an alien. He’s not some farmboy from Kansas. He is a literal alien. Synder wanted to explore the consequences, ramifications and implications of a God amongst humans. Synder took these characters and the mythology seriously. That’s all I needed. I wanted a version of Superman who is morally tormented, pugnacious but with a little bit of humanity and humility. Synder executed these heroes with dramatic effect. I’ve never taken these characters seriously until now and this is coming from a huge Batman and Superman fan. I have my own critique of how they should be portrayed. If you don’t like his work then fine but there’s no need to have a seizure or mental breakdown over it. Calm down it’s not that deep. We get it, you didn’t like his version, cool. 👍🏿 😅🤣

@TheMetaMan - This is what I meant. You are looking at the aesthetics of the film and not the ramifications. For example you stated "I prefer a Batman who’s more frightening, unhinged and lethal exactly as Batman should be..." Ok but the ramifications of that is that if Batman leisurely kills, why not just kill the Joker and all of the people in his rogues gallery. Oh wait...then you could not continue to tell Batman stories or at the very least you will have to keep creating villains for him to kill. See the rabbit hole that Zack Snyder's interpretation leads us to?
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 4/18/2024, 11:17 AM
@Forthas - Firstly Batman threatens to kill the Joker in the deleted scene in the synder cut justice league. I’m sure you have come across this scene somewhere on social media. Secondly, BvS technically isn’t a batman film it’s a follow up to Man of steel. If Synder made a self-contained or solo batman film then I’d happily admit the fallacy of my argument. I believe his creative choices are justified because he made two films that are follow ups not direct sequels, or prequels or spin-offs. Furthermore he wanted to make a direct sequel to MOS, but Warner insisted on Superman fighting Batman, therefore Synder obliged this demand against his own aspirations. If you believe that Synder turned Batman into the Punisher, then you are right. Also Batman has killed directly in the comics and he’s killed directly onscreen too. Ive had to remind everyone about Batman returns so I’ll remind you too. Keaton’s Batman planted a bomb on some goon, punched him over a wall and the guy blew up. Isn’t that murder? Oh wait no, we will just turn a blind eye because it’s Tim burton directing not Synder, silly me. Also bruce destroyed headquarters of TLOS in Batman begins. He straight up set that place on fire then escaped with the real Ra’s Al-Gul in tow, however every ninja in that palace clearly died. Again we can’t criticise Christopher Nolan nor Burton because if they have Batman directly killing onscreen it’s justified right? I should condemn Synder for his audacity. 🤦🏿‍♂️ You see my friend hypocrisy and ignorance amongst humans never ceases to amaze me. 😁😆

Forthas - 4/18/2024, 11:41 AM
@TheMetaMan - Your assertion about Burton's Batman is correct. He was a murderer and I have often explained I think the films are not as good as people think they remember. When it comes to Christopher Nolan you are TOTALLY WRONG. Bale flipped a burning cinder onto explosives to create a diversion - not to kill anyone - second the ninjas all ran away. The only person you actually see dead is the fake Ras Al Ghul. Batman did not kill anyone. You keep trying to make up something that did not happen to justify Affleck's Batman killing. Just like a police officer if they or someone is in danger they can and should use deadly force to save themselves or other. Affleck's Batman pointed a gun at numerous people who posed no danger to him or anyone else and he murdered them. In BvS he is the one who chased down people who were just delivering the Kryptonite to Luthor. How is he justified in murdering them?

TheMetaMan - 4/18/2024, 12:04 PM
@Forthas - Like I said my friend if it’s ok to call you that? If you believe that Synder made Batman into the Punisher then you are correct. Personally I love it. I always wanted to see a version of Batman unhinged, cut loose, a sociopath. I always wanted a grittier, darker, Superman where there are actual stakes. Something MOS does really well. As for Bale’s Batman we will have to agree to disagree but what about the Dark Knight? I know what you are going to say… “It was self-defence because he had a gun to the child’s head and therefore there was no other option.” I’m talking about Batman blindsiding Dent off the edge to his death in TDK. Now if your philosophy holds true then surely Nolan could have rewritten the script to have Gordon push Dent over the edge and not Batman? Why was Batman the one who had to be the cause of Dent’s death? Self-defence of not… like it or not, believe it or not, accept it or not, Batman kills. Weather directly or indirectly. It’s his destiny to be responsible for the deaths of others because Batman at his core is a morally ambiguous character. It’s ironic because in most stories he’s struggling to maintain that fine balance between diplomacy and self-destruction. The lines are always blurred. If you told me you have a problem with Superman killing, I’d actually agree with you. Batman was created by Bob Kane with the intention of the character being considered as a type of executioner because realistically he’s nothing more then a vigilante. However this is only evident at the discretion of the writer at hand. Symbolically, Batman is based on Pluto - the God of the underworld just like Superman is based on Apollo - the Sun God. Thematically there has to be an element of malice within the character of Batman it just depends on the story that houses such conditions. All I’m saying is that some of us have absolutely no problem with Batman killing and some directors clearly don’t either. I can’t be the only one who thinks this.

According to several interviews I've read from different directors, studios many times pick a director who has their own unique style and then want the directors to give up their creative control and do it the studio's way.

It's like the studios didn't do their homework and instead just picked a director because their movie made good money.

Reverence and mythology correct are very subjective, as everybody consumes different media. And it's indeed why his version didn't work for the masses, as it wasn't very appetizing for them
