We've known for a while that Ray Porter was cast as Darkseid in Justice League, but when Joss Whedon decided to cut the villain from the theatrical version of the movie, his work went unseen and unheard. Now, though, we're getting Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max next year, and that means this iconic comic book villain will be revealed on the big screen in all his glory.
During a recent interview with LightCast (via ComicBook.com), Porter revealed that he's been bombarded with requests to share exactly what his Darkseid voice is going to sound like.
"There's been a lot of questions on Twitter today, 'Can you do the voice?'" Porter recalled. "It's like no, that's not going to happen. Let's wait until 2021. You'll hear it when I hear it [laughs]."
"I went through a few different sort of vocal gymnastic things in kind of trying to figure out the voice," he continued. "I needed it to be understandable, but it needed to be a voice that was not of this Earth. And that’s what I tried to go for. I can’t wait to hear it either, because also, while I did this voice and everybody was really, really nice about it."
"I know that in post they probably did stuff to it, and I can’t wait to hear that," Porter added. "Plus, the voice that I did, it wouldn’t be something that I could really project. It’s hard, hard on the vocal cords." It certainly sounds like his take on Darkseid was a unique one, but we're clearly going to have to wait until 2021 until we actually get to hear it in action.
We know that Darkseid appeared during that battle thousands of years ago with men, Amazons, and Atlanteans, while he was also meant to play a role in the final act. Beyond, that we don't know how big - or small - his role in Zack Snyder's Justice League will actually end up being.
