STAR WARS: J.J. Abrams' Advice On Playing A Young Han Solo

J.J. Abrams jobs as director on Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be complete but he still has ideas and advice for the candidates in the running to play a young Han Solo in the prequel film. Should they watch A New Hope? Nope. Abrams thinks they should study Indiana Jones!

In order to play  a young Han Solo in Disney and Lucasfilm's forthcoming prequel, does The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams think the actors should study Star Wars: A New Hope? Nope! He thinks they should study Indiana Jones instead.  "Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark. It’ll all be right there."

Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan previously stated that the Han Solo prequel wouldn't focus on the character's childhood but would instead, pick up about 10 years before the events of A New Hope. Actors on the shortlist include Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen and and Blake Jenner.  Fans should remember that Disney has a history of seldom picking names that emerge on the initial shortlist so just because your personal pick may not be listed that doesn't necessarily mean they're not in the running.

Director Chris Miller and Phil Lord are currently knee deep in the casting process with Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy.  A decision is expected to be announced very soon as there's talk that whoever is cast may appear in Rouge One: A Star Wars story, another prequel film set before the events of A New Hope..

JJ would have him show up at end. Then say and do nothing. Thanks JJ.

Why would whoever is cast show up in Rogue One if Rogue One takes place almost immediately before ANH? Han should be Harrison by that point (and really, Han should only be Harrison).

Seems like JJ was turned into some kind of "Midas", or "eminence"... c'mon, he still is a mediocre director, but now some people are calling him a "genius". That's ridiculous.

So the idiot who made the shallowest film in the franchise that exclusively appeals to other idiots, is giving idiotic advise for making another idiotic idea into a movie? Sounds about right.

Let's deflate the hype here: Abrams is terrible with characters or character development. This is the same guy who needed a flashback sequence in a Star Wars movie plot, which all turned out to be about his main character having 'amnesia'. That's several levels below a montage, it's drooling idiot territory.

The original cast was lazily dumped onto this film simply to appease Star Wars fans of old. They weren’t written in seamlessly, they were slapped onto the movie with the grace and subtly of a four-year-old glueing hard macaroni onto craft paper. And the handling of Han’s death scene was a freakin’ travesty. Han felt like a Saturday Night Live Skit version of himself, because he was intentionally portrayed that way. No funeral for Captain Solo? Or even acknowledgment of his death? Or the billions of deaths from that quickly brushed over Starkiller-Base galactic genocide for that matter? Really?? So to be clear, Qui-gon and Padme “Japor Snippet” Amidala get recognition of their deaths in their movies. Han Solo, most beloved character in all of Star Wars, does not. OH. MY. GOODNESS.
“ General Hux: A whiny, spoiled, ginger-brat flavored Hitler with over the top nazi references. Watching Bill Weasley(a role Dohmnall was perfectly cast in) from Harry Potter shriek in a prepubescent third-reich-rage on a green screen yelling at a bunch of CGI stormtroopers who clearly weren’t really there, who then all sieg heiled, was hysterical. This is the new Empire? These are the new villains of the “First” Order? DISNEY’s youth agenda casting badly HURT THIS CHARACTER in particular. A much older officer would have been far more credible here. It’s the writing and casting that gave the audience next to no reason to give even one f$$k, let alone multiple f$$k$, about General Fux.”
This article touches on the disney touch you refer to, it is too long to post here though.

I would rather see a good actor... Like Miles teller get this role over someone like elgort, who actually looks like solo a little, but I don't know if he could pull off the wise ass part of the role. I mean if this is set 10 yrs before ANH, then solo shouldn't really be a good guy. Tho not necessarily a bad guy either.

I've seen the top three guys in a lot of films lately, but teller is the only one that has carried a movie, though he did have an Oscar winner in a supporting role. I could see Franco and teller easily pulling off the whip smart, ball busting smuggler type. As for the others, I don't know anything about them. But maybe that's a good thing...

What I want to know is: why do they have to shoehorn solo into rogue one. Rogue one looks like it's got a great cast, Maybe a Vader cameo of him training mads as his apprentice, x-wings, lots of fighter pilot battles and war, get the Death Star plans from the geonocians (so) and lots of bothan deaths. Did I miss anything?

I was actually hoping that the HAN SOLO film would be set in between A NEW HOPE and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and would focus on Han being on the run from Jabba the Hutt and fighting "the bounty hunter from Ord Mantell" that was mentioned but we never got to see.
