Last night during the New York Upfronts, CBS All Access unveiled our first look at the upcoming Star Trek series that will see the return of Patrick Stewart at legendary former Captain of the USS Enterprise, Jean Luc Picard.

It was announced that the series will be titled Star Trek: Picard, and fans were treated to a first glimpse of Stewart back in the Starfleet uniform along with the show's official logo.

Star Trek Into Darkness writer Alex Kurtzman is on board as showrunner, while Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek: Discovery) will direct the pilot and second episode.

The plot of the series is still firmly under wraps. In fact, all we know for certain is that the story will revolve around the aging Picard coming out of retirement to offer his expertise to Starfleet after the destruction of the planet Romulus, which occurred in the 2009 Star Trek reboot.

A trailer is sure to shed some more light, but in the meantime let us know what you make of this first look at Star Trek: Picard in the comments.

I need this show to be good.

@Kyos - I mostly just need it not to be bad.

Mediocre I can handle, but you don't bring back Stewart just to have him fall flat on his face like they did with Kirk in Generations. (Though the scene in the ribbon was definitely Shatner at his best, at least.)

@Spock0Clock - Okay, yeah, I can fully get behind 'not be bad'. Or at least 'let me personally be good with it.

"Picard" isn't exactly the most creative name, to be honest. I just hope they know what they're doing with this.

@Supercat6376 - Yes it is...an alternate reality was established.

@Supercat6376 - Its not occurring in the reboot timeline - Romulus was destroyed in the original timeline, resulting in Spock getting sent to the Kelvin timeline.
This show seems to be focused on the aftermath in the original timeline.

''In fact, all we know for certain is that the story will revolve around the aging Picard coming out of retirement to offer his expertise to Starfleet after the destruction of the planet Romulus, which occurred in the 2009 Star Trek reboot.''

SO this takes place in JJ's Kelvin timeline? Pretty interesting I guess

So basically this an "alternate reality" version of Picard set up by the 2009 Kelvin time-line. That's actually clever....they don't have to be too careful with continuity because essentially it is not a sequel series to TNG.

I am so excited about this, having a character played by an actor that I love is amazing, cant wait. I am fine with the Kelvin universe. Star Trek has dealt with time travel many times before and always won, this time they won but with complications, major complications. That is okay, its okay to explore places where Star Trek has not gone before (see what I did there)

@ScRipt69 - It's not set in the Kelvin universe. Romulus was destroyed in the prime universe in the 2009 film.

This and Discovery look so good, but I can’t justify paying for a CBS streaming platform. Already have Amazon Prime, Netflix, DCU, DTV and will be getting Disney +. CBS being one of the original broadcast networks just feels like it should be free. Oh well, I’ll just wait for it to show up somewhere else eventually. I’m a patient man.

@MuadDib - why pay when you can torrent or download the episodes ? Hell...Been doing that now for over 15 years. Game of thrones...Discovery...download them all.

Prime universe never ceased to exist. This series is set in the PRIME universe! Kelvin timeline is a new universe created by altering the past! Everyone should be aware of this theory for time travel thanks to Endgame! Star Trek has several different theories and cases of time-travel. Next Generation even had an episode where the time-line was broken and multiple Enterprise-D's appeared.

To reiterate for those who only jump to conclusions: KELVIN timeline is a different universe. Time continued on in the PRIME timeline. While Star Trek Online (MMORPG) is not cannon, its stories are from post-Romulus destruction.

@barisax - The point being that older fans would rather not hear anything about the "Kelvin" timeline. It's great that a Picard series would happen...it sucks that it's centered around the Kelvin crap again.
barisax
barisax - 5/16/2019, 8:17 AM
@pintoman - But its not! It takes place after the destruction of Romulus (PRIME universe)....This series has nothing to do with Kelvin Timeline....
pintoman
pintoman - 5/16/2019, 8:22 AM
@barisax - Maybe you are missing something? The series is said to center around the events that the creators of the Kelvin timeline created in the Prime universe....and Kurtzman is attached. When people say they don't want the "Kelvin timeline stuff" they are not just saying stay out of that timeline...they are saying don't mention that those films happened at all, and by the way, kick Kurtzman off the project.
