It's Official! "Avatar" has overtaken "Titanic" to become the new box office king.

Discounting inflation and fatter 3D ticket prices, it became official today as "Avatar" closed the gap and became the highest grossing film of all time worldwide.

"Avatar" entered Monday needing only $2 million to eclipse the $1.842 billion mark set by director James Cameron's previous film "Titanic" in 1998. Averaging nearly $4 million a day in week-day performances of late just in North America, the 3D film has already broken the record, even though no official tabulation has been announced.

On Sunday, Fox announced that "Avatar" had reached $1.29 billion in foreign receipts, making it the top international grosser ever. With $551.7 million in domestic ticket sales, the film should also surpass "Titanic's" $600.8 million North American record by the end of the upcoming weekend.

"Avatar" passed "The Dark Knight" ($533.3 million) for second place on the domestic list this past weekend.

Of course, adjusting for inflation, the revenue picture looks quite a bit different.

According to tracking firm Box Office Mojo, with inflation factored in, "Avatar" ranks only 26th all time in North American gross. The all-time leader on this list is "Gone With the Wind," which has an adjusted domestic total of $1.48 billion. "Star Wars" is in second place with $1.3 billion.

Also not factored in are "Avatar's" premium 3D ticket prices, which are, on average, about $3 per unit more than standards 2D admissions.

For its part, Fox will profit handsomely from "Avatar," regardless one analyst predicts the film will net the studio $918 million in profits before Cameron gets his cut.

I saw this coming the moment i walked out of the movies. It was an Epic movie no doubt but I still say that price changes since titanic is the only reason for this exceeding expectations in the box office. What do you guys think?

That's gotta be pretty sweet for Cameron.I wonder if he ever throws it in the face of other directors?

yeah, he's lighting stoggies and wiping his ass with all the cash he's made.

I'm not going to lie, I didn't think it would do this well in a million years. It just didn't seem like the kind of movie you'd go to see more than once. Guess I was wrong.

I won't post my opinion on the movie in detail. Most people I talked to missed the not so obvious messages. I do not think it was over rated.

As for the inflation stuff I honestly don't care about that. Lucas is very lucky he didn't have to compete with pirates. Youtube, Torrents, etc.

This inflation stuff evens out IMO because of this.

I don't see how this story was any better than Star Wars. The movie served it's purpose. Entertainment. If I wanted a long involving story then I would read lord of the rings or watchmen.

For those that want to compare Avatar to other movies...instead of looking at the similarities look at the differences.

Finally that 533 set by Dark Knight was after its 33 week run. That 600 million was after a 41 week run for Titanic. This 551 million is only after 6 weeks for Avatar. Also if I was given the choice of watching any movie you want to compare Avatar too or Avatar. I would take Avatar over the snorefest Dances with Wolves or disney-fied Pocahontas,

Sure Avatar wasn't ground breaking in acting, but neither was Star Wars. People around the world flocked to Avatar for the same reason so many did Star Wars. To escape the complex times we are living in atm.

Some took the movie way to far and actually missed main message of the movie. It had nothing to do with nature. The deus ex was used to show us how far fetched it is to believe some spirit watches over us and guards us. The concept of Avatars was used to remind us that we only have one body so take care of it. The fact that Jake uses his Avatar to jump worlds has to do with how society does the same now on sites like these. Blogs, youtube, MMOs, etc.

Instead of doing something about our troubles we sit and complain on the web hoping they solve themselves or we go run into a virtual world and slay a dragon to feel better.

I honestly do not believe James had this story written already and stashed away. The world and Na'vi yes, but not the story.

definitely worthy of this honor. it was visually innovative and beautiful, extremely relevant to our times, and the story was top notch (though i like it the first time, too, when it was called dances with wolves lolz).

it's not in my top 5 best movies ever or anything, but it definitely hits on all cylinders

..ugh, good for james. i'm disheartened to see titanic go down to avatar. all special effects. in a whole the movie was decent, remove the special effects and you have just a good movie. nothing worthy of being #1 of all time.

..it has officially become the most overrated movie in history.

i wish Kathryn would've filmed Hurt Locker with the same special effects, then it would have done those type of numbers. LOL

As a movie it was decent at best, when you take away the effects. It really isn't anything special without the effects. That's my opinion.

I don't really care about how much box office it gets, because it has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. But, if it wins Best Picture at the Oscars, it will be a dark day for the film industry IMO.

I know I'll get attacked for not jizzing over the movie, but whatever. That's all it is, a movie.

This post is true but Avatar is still 49 million away from number 1 in the US. That total given is World wide. Personally until its number in the US its not number 1. I hope it does become number 1 but sorry its not there yet.

OK, someone posted an article under news earlier today stating that The Hawk has died. When I came back here later, the article is gone and there is no mention of it anywhere. Does anyone know what is going on?

If this is true my condolences & prayers go out to Phoenix & Hawk's family.

The only thing I can come up with is James Cameron is a time traveler from the future and knows exactly what to do with his movies. Either that, or he's an Alien, lol.

I don't know. The article was put out by a friend of his named bob2 or something like that. He said he had died from a heart attack this afternoon. He wanted to make sure others on this site were aware. I even looked at his last fan fic article and Hawk posted today. I left a msg there as well.

I used to love to come to cbm and have fun. I see less and less of my friends and now one has passed away. Its not the same anymore on cbm.
