Guillermo Del Toro Talks PACIFIC RIM Trailer And Possible Sequel

Confirming that the first trailer will be released next month, Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro discusses his involvement in cutting the trailer. He also comments on the sci-fi film's 3D conversion and the possibility of a sequel.

Speaking with Collider, director Guillermo del Toro discusses his highly anticipated sci-fi epic Pacific Rim, which hits theaters next month. He previously said that the first trailer for the film will debut around the end of the year after premiering some footage at San Diego Comic-Con, but now he confirms that it will be released in the middle of December. Since both movies are from Warner Bros., there's a very good chance that the Pacific Rim trailer will be attached to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (which hits theaters December 14th). Del Toro talks about his involvement in cutting the trailer, as well as the finished effects. "They bring it to me and then I do a little pass myself, I help with the sound design, then we re-cut it again, and then I’m involved in the timing of the color and the mixing of the sound, so whatever you saw in San Diego or New York, I was completely part of the process. We have a couple of finished shots, but most of the stuff is being finished for the trailer. If it goes public, it has to be [stuff that I’m happy to show]. I’m very, very happy to show off what we’ll show in December."

Del Toro also discusses the Pacific Rim 3D conversion. "We’re getting footage in 3D from two forms: one is all the footage that is CG is being composited directly by ILM. So John Knoll, who is one of the greatest minds in the business, is supervising that there’s no miniaturization in those shots. And they’re looking gorgeous; they’re coming basically fast and furious every week. And the other sources of 3D is Stereo D, and those are looking fantastic too."

Finally, he comments on a possible sequel to the Legendary Pictures tentpole. While he is currently talking ideas with screenwriter Travis Beacham, del Toro is more interested in working on some other projects before the Pacific Rim sequel, naming The Strain TV pilot and an animated adaptation of Pinocchio. "We certainly started tossing ideas for possibilities of a sequel and Travis Beacham and I are writing a proposal of ideas, but at the same time I know I don’t want to do that next. I want to do something else, I want to do something in a different genre that’s not so big. So I don’t know yet what it’s gonna be, but I know that next year I’m delivering Pacific Rim in July and then I’m doing—God willing—the voice shooting for Pinocchio and then the pilot for The Strain for FX."

Pacific Rim is set to hit theaters July 12th, 2013.

Del Toro is great and all. But the guy seems like he is all talk. He says he's working on 30 projects, but then he moves on to another, different one... I'll change my opinion when I start seeing some of his "Works in Progress".

Wrong... First Hellboy is the one which was good. It had little bit everything. Great menacing villains. Although Kroenen´s (the gas mask guy) role should have been bigger (He speaks in the comics). And good match between him and HB wouldnt have hurt either.
Little bit humor and good dramatic moments.

The second just looked good and had ok villain. The [frick]ing baby talk and Hellboy´s over childish attitude ruined it.
NO [frick]ING WAY for the third film if the Hellboy twins are going to show up and HB stays the same annoying [frick].

This makes me even more excited for the Hobbit because I get to see the trailers for Pacific Rim and Man of Steel. I don't think my body can handle that level of awesome.

Are you people crazy??!!! The Hellboy movies are fantastic. The first one is probably one of the best CBMs out there and the second one is awesome as well.

Im just being critical like any good fanboy should be. :)
