Has The Rock Confirmed That SHAZAM Won't Be Set In The DC Cinematic Universe?

There has been speculation in the past that Shazam will be a standalone movie with no links to the Justice League or DC Cinematic Universe, and now a Tweet from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in response to a fan seemingly reveals that it may indeed be set apart from those.

Warner Bros. and New line cinema work closely together, so the fact that the latter studio is releasing Shazam shouldn't stop the character from appearing in Justice League if Zack Snyder so desired. Of course, comments from New Line President Toby Emmerich back in September did seemingly indicate that it would be a standalone release. Here they are again if you need a reminder! "It feels to me like like 'Shazam' will have a tone unto itself. It's a DC comic, but it's not a Justice League character, and it's not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies." A Tweet from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (who will play Black Adam in the movie) earlier this week seems to confirm that it won't be forced to adopt the same tone as the movies set in the world of the Justice League and that "#Independence" hashtag could be an indication that they have control to handle the property as they see fit. Things can change of course - especially as we're so far from the release date - but reading between the lines here...it definitely sounds as if Shazam is set in its own world. Thoughts?

But honestly what would be the point of Captain Marvel or (shudder) Shazam if he isn't in the DC Universe...?

Nick Mundy needs to sit his fat ass down somewhere. Always complaining about something...

And this movie better be connected to the damn DC universe. None of this "multiverse" "connected but not connected" shit.

Oh, I think I see the problem. Josh has confused the word "tone" for "continuity" ...

I'm willing to bet that it is connected, just that Billy isn't a part of the JL.
Cyborg, GL, Flash, Shazam, Aquaman, and even Superman and Batman (to a lesser extent) have all been revitalized by Geoff Johns.

I think they're all meant to be part of the same universe.
It seems like the movies will still be given some degree of freedom to stand on their own as rumor suggests that the Wonder Woman movie will be a period piece set in the 1920s.

@HurricaneXavier, I think it is separate. Notice that he specifically calls it a New Line/DC property as opposed to a WB/DC property?

Isn't Shazam -a New Line movie? It was the only movie being made by Warner's subsidary company. That alone should had raised some concern how connected it would be with the other Justice League DC movies.

Who is Nick Mundy? Anyways, David Goyer is busy working on Constantine.

He is no longer attached to DC movies moving forward.

Also, with The Rock playing Black Adam, there is no way they would have Shazam separated from the DCCU.

@SuperCat

Why not? Gonna need some comedy to attract the GA to the strange concept of Billy Batson.

GarthRanzz
GarthRanzz - 11/5/2014, 8:51 PM
Good. I don't think it should be connected. Not a fan of shared universes. Shazam is too light hearted to live in a world of Batman.

SHAZAM is an adventurous and light heated fun character. Tone doesn't fit gritty serious dc films.

I wouldn't mind it being outside DC universe

I think some of you need to have some damn patience. This film is very far from release. Nothing's been confirmed except for the Rock's involvement as Black Adam. Keep cool and await the official details when they arise.
