Todd McFarlane Updates On New Spawn Movie; Compares It To The Departed!

Little is known about new Spawn movie that is currently in development. But, during New York Comic Con, creator and writer Todd McFarlane shared some new info about the project, and he also compared it to The Departed...

In couple of interviews, Todd McFarlane mentioned that he is trying to make a new Spawn film and that he is writing a script. McFarlane said that it will won't a typical adaptation of this character, but something very different. How different you ask? Well, during New York Comic Con, The Movie Blog had a chance to ask him couple of questions about the project, where he compared it to Martin Scorsese's The Departed. More below...

On the status of the project:

All they’re waiting for is my script. As soon as I get my script, which could take me about 2 months if I’m not distracted, that’s always a good guess. I got the story, I’ve been living with the story for 10 years I know the story I got the story down… which is why they wanna make it! Cus, I keep pitching them the story and they go "Well, go write it Todd".

Apparently, it will be a more realistic story, with a "boogey man" in it:

You ever see the movie "The Departed"? It’s like the movie "The Departed" except there’s a boogey man in it. It won’t be a “superhero movie”. It’ll be sort of a suspense/thriller/drama. The only thing in the movie that will be out of the ordinary will be the "boogey man" that You and I know as “Spawn”. So, it’s not going to be "Spawn vs. a demon vs. Clown", they’re not going to do any of that. Think about it as "The Grudge". There’s only one thing in that movie the "boogey man" in that house, everything else in that is real in that movie so it’s like that. It’s more of a story movie.

Yeah, I honestly don't know what to think of this, really. What are your thoughts on a more realistic approach for this character?

If Todd was smart, he'd sell the rights to Spawn to Marvel/DC to make this character mainstream again.

Probably Marvel for the steadier movie rights.

the most over saturated term in hollywood RETURNS! "realistic" take. The movie should embrace its supernatural elements and it should be a horror/action movie. Wait what McFarlane wrote the script for the first one wow! I did not know.

Todd McFarlane is going to destroy this movie! He's starting to P**S ME OFF!!!! He wants to make it with a low budget and have Spawn as a "Boogey Man" type of figure so Spawn gets less screen time as possible....and here is the proof:

Don't get me wrong Spawn fans, i was a die hard fan of Spawn, and my favorite artist has been Greg Capullo since then.

If he wants to make a Sam & Twitch movie, then he got to make a GOOD movie of Spawn. As some acomments above said, it would be awesome that we could see a horror epic movie. Guillermo Del Toro could do it, and then, it could have those thriller elements McFarlane wants to do.

Spawn has lost tons of fans, and it's gonna be hard to get them back. Todd must let some other creative team, a good creative team take the character and develop it in an epic way. I hope, if we see a spawn movie in the next years, could be as awesome as the Hellboy movies.

Just to finish my comment ¿Did anyone remember the last scene of the spaen movie where sam & Twitch appeared? AWFUL! I was a kid and i hated that.

@Hellsing i completely agree, im so sick of every director trying to do what christopher nolan did with dark knight, the batman can be a "realistic" character because hes not a super human hes just a martial artist that is really smart. Spawn is a demon from hell, with super natural powers...its a COMIC BOOK MOVIE!!!!! we dont care if its realistic! Just make it good and ppl will enjoy it.

@itbegins - yeah, while he does seem to be full of bs at times if it is any bit like the departed with a boogeyman i'm all for it - definitely don't mind either way if it gets made or not

He had me up until he said some nonsense about a boogeyman, then he named The Grudge (why would you name a good movie like The Departed, then kill it by mentioning a terrible movie like The Grudge lol)?

McFarlane's a talented guy.
He can do better than this.
I'd like to see 'Spawn' vs. 'Smurfs' vs. 'Mario Bro.'s
vs. 'Daffy Duck' vs. 'Johnny Bravo' vs. 'Megus XLR' vs. 'Dracula' vs. Mit Romney vs. the Green Bay Packer's vs.'Mr.Clean' vs. 'Boba Fett' vs. earthworms vs. toast vs. stagnant pond water vs. Michael Phelps vs. 'Duke Nukem' vs. corn flakes vs. vice pres. Joe Biden.

McFarlane......

Lol that picture of Spawn looks a whole lot lit Dr Strange. In fact Spawn is a whole lot like a bunch of crap pushed into one "original Character"...
"boogie man" LMAF.. whats so scrry about spawn...

Guess he is finally feeling the fact that he has blown so much money on worthless baseball memorabilia over the years..

Go [frick] thy self McFarlane...

The first time i heard this idea from todd i thought it was stupid but now that i think of it,if its dark and gritty enough it will be epic and could possibly lead to a spawn superhero, well as close as spawn gets to a superhero movie,it sounds like a sound idea he just needs to write it,because Sam & Twitch are awesome i just know itll be based on them somehow

Wow. This blows. I want to see a better Spawn, that more closely follows the Spawn comics. Why would I want to see Spawn as the boogey-man.

McFarlane should sell Spawn to Marvel so that he could be done justice.

Its not a Spawn movie if he is not the main character. -_-

I heard he is going to focus on the two Laurel and Hardy looking cops. Sam and Twitch or what their names were? Seriously just give it to someone who has money to make a faithful adaptation of Spawn himself and then we are talking.

We need more dark adult´s superhero movies with horror, fantasy and crime elements.
Think about Hellboy combined with The Crow and Hellraiser! That would make a great Spawn movie!:)
