Spider-Man has had a rough few years when it comes to video games. Both Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows were critical failures and although they recieved a mixed reaction from fans, the majority were left wishing for a game as good as 2004's Spider-Man 2. Judging by both the information and footage we've seen of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions over the past few months, it seems that it would be the game that would bring the character back to his success of the past. So, the question is - did it? The answer is yes and no.

In the game, you play as the Amazing, Noir, 2099 and Ultimate versions of the wall crawler with each level revolving around you having to find a piece of the "Tablet of Order and Chaos" which was shattered into pieces during a skirmish between Spider-Man and Mysterio, causing problems with multiple Marvel Universe realities. They may have made a big deal about Dan Slott having written this game but it's important to note that he only wrote the story and not the script so dont expect too much of the fantastic dialogue he uses for Spidey in the pages
of Amazing on a regular basis. Overall, it's really nothing special as you basically only get five very brief cutscenes that supply any sort of story which brings me to my next point. I've come to accept that not every game will have the production values of Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves or be as epic as Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3. The problem with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions though is that it just feels lazy. As I've just mentioned, there are only 5 very short cutscenes and each level begins with what are basically a series of still pictures that have a small amount of movement in them. They all also end rather abruptly with no sort of conclusion that moves any of the Spider-Men on in their own story arc. It's literally a case of working your way through the levels doing the same thing over and over with no character development whatsoever. (more on that later though) This, along with the fact that you'll often find yourself irritated by Spider-Man or the villains he faces constantly repeating the same lines over and over as if they only recorded about 5 phrases for each of them makes it feel like they put very little effort into the finer details.

Apart from the tutorial and final battle, there are only 3 levels for each Spider-Man and they're all very repetitive. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail as I obviously dont want to ruin anything for you but here are a few examples. Basically, you'll jump around the fighting generic bad guy after bad guy until a small fight with the main villain about halfway through (or sometimes at the start) and then again at the end. Along the way you'll find yourself doing a lot of webslinging as Amazing, a lot of crawling in shadows as Noir, a lot of freefalling as 2099 and pretty much everything Amazing does but in a different coloured suit as Ultimate. This isnt to say that they're not enjoyable and you'll often find some fantastic set pieces here and there along with several impressive boss battles. Despite the different locations and characters, they all end up feeling the same and whether you're pummelling Sandman's sand monsters or Deadpool's fanboys, there is very little to distinguish between these bad guys...they just look different. The fighting is much improved from the past few games but is still far from perfect. I got a 200 move combo from just continuosly pressing the square button while the moves you can pull of with various combinations are entirely optional as the bad guys you face are never difficult enough to make it necessary to start mixing things up. As you progress, you're able to buy new moves but things get so chaotic during battles, you'll find it hard to really see what exactly Spider-Man is doing. The Noir stealth sections are ok but consist mainly of just walking or crawling around in heavily shadowed areas until the prompt to press circle pops up on screen for you to watch a scene of him webbing a villain up. The 2099 diving bits are also fun enough but require very little in the way of skill.

The idea to take Spider-Man
out of New York and into enclosed areas only really works for the Noir version. Webslinging feels very clumsy and frustrating while the web zipping ability (where you automatically jump from one designated point to another) is just as irritating because you'll find yourself ending up in the wrong place more often than the right one. None of this is helped by yet another dodgy camera which constantly ends up focused on the wrong thing or unable to cope with you jumping from a wall to a ceiling. In terms of graphics, the game does look very nice. Despite things often getting far too chaotic on screen, the animations are all brilliantly done, although you may be left scratching your head after seeing Spider-Man create giant fists out of his webs to punch enemies with! The pointless first person fight scenes are also great fun to look at but add very little to the actual game. Unfortunately, most levels do have a habit of having very generic backrounds but this is often easy to ignore when there's plenty of other things happenning and you're having to swing away from a Helicarrier about to crash behind you - it's a pity things like that are so few and far between. The boss battles are often very ambitious in scale and really benefit from the power of consoles like the PS3 to make them as exciting as possible. Perhaps the best thing about Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is the fantastic voice work. All fours actors (Neil Patrick Harris, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Dan Gilvezan, and Josh Keaton) are brilliant as their respective Spider-Man and help lend a great deal of atmosphere to proceedings. The villains that feature are also voiced by some great actors (Nolan North reprising his Hulk Vs. role as Deadpool is a bonus) and this is most definitely one thing they nailed. Stan Lee's narration is brief but fantastic fun.

The thing with video games is that we all have certain things we expect and enjoy. I finished this in roughly 8 hours and it's unfortunately not a case of quality over quantity. Unless you're desperate to go back and "punch X amount of bad guys" or "dodge X amount of rockets" there really is very little in the way of replay value with nothing to unlock apart from a few alternate costumes and the linear levels mean you cant go back and play through them any differently. Despite my criticisms, it's not really a bad game and I mostly enjoyed my time playing Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Some great villains, set pieces and voice acting save this game and this new sort approach to the character was admittedly interesting but a failed experiment in my opinion. With the power of consoles like the PS3 and X-Box 360, they should be able to deliever an epic and impressive free roaming game which this clearly is not. The first time I switched on Spider-Man 2 back in 2004, jumped from a building, shot a web and swung through New York I felt like Spider-Man. This just felt like any other avergae third person beat 'em up. They're on the right track to returning the wall crawler to his former video game glory but this game proves that they still have quite a way to go. Rent it or wait for it to come down in price. Perhaps the inevitable tie-in to the upcoming reboot will put the "Amazing" back in Spider-Man for the current generation of consoles...

Great review dude, very in depth. I had no plans to get this, for some reason Spidey games don't really appeal to me. I did enjoy Spider-Man 2 on the PS2 alright but even that got a bit repetitive. It will take some effort to knock Arkham Asylum off the super hero game top spot for me anyway. And at teh moment I'm right into Oblivion!(Yeah, I only recently got my PS3..still catching up!)

Basically every Spider-man game since Spider-man 2 has been exactly the same minus a few changes. They have all received similar reviews, they have all sold a similar amount of units and they are all way too repetitive with a few good boss fights scattered about. I was casually tracking this game hoping for something good but based on reviews like this one I'll probably pass until it is $20 used. Nice review Josh!

Thanks guys! :)

patriautism: I dont think I could even make a top 5 when it comes to Spider-Man games...Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man were great but the rest were mostly awful IMO!

LEE: Lol, keep on pimping bud!

ROR: I completely agree with you on all counts and I probably should have mentioned Arkham Asylum when talking about games with high production values as it was amazing from start to finish. And believe me, I loved Spider-Man 2 but I could have shot myself by the 100th times I was asked to save a little girl's balloon, lol! Glad you're enjoying Oblivion...don't forget to check out the games I told you about when you finish it!

Ryguy88/Dopamine: Save your money and rent it guys. I'm already planning on selling my copy on eBay tomorrow! At least when I finished Uncharted 2 in 10 hours, it was one of the greatest gaming related experiences of my life...the word "Meh" instantly comes to mind when thinking about this game! It's not as bad as Web of Shadows but it's not a lot better.

weneedrevelation: I dont have an X-Box 360 but judging by what I've seen of that game, I'd say you're making the right choice! I just wish I had saved my money for the new F1 game that's out later this month!

Good review man, pity this game sucks. Thanks for saving me 60 bucks.

8-10 hours is pretty short for a game. Unless it is a fighting games story line. Well, there's always next time.

Great review man, my fav spider games are spider man 2 and Web of shawdows, I was a bit disapointed when I found out this wasnt sandbox style, Im hoping they make another sandbox style spider man soon, web of shawdows was so much fun but the voice acting was just shameful

It was a great game. Felt very agile as Amazing. Felt very strong as Ultimate. Felt very fast as 2099. Felt very stealthy as Noir. It was very much as advertised. Each person will probably have a personal favorite Spidey based on their own playstyle preference - I know I did.

It was a nice refresher from the same generic free roam game that was essentially reskinned twice since Spider-man 2 (Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-man 3). The only complaint I have is wall crawling from the ceiling back onto a wall proved much more difficult than it should have been. The ending wasn't as climactic as I had hoped, but you can't help but love Stan Lee's cheesy dialogue.

People who play on easy and try to finish as quickly as possible will probably end up very bored. Getting caught out of the shadows as Spider-man Noir is very inconsequential on Easy, but set the difficulty higher and you will find yourself planning your actions much more carefully.

It is pretty obvious this game also has some DLC coming its way. I would advise those of you who want a longer story to wait for the (highly probable) DLC to be included on a special edition of the game and buy it then.

Good review Josh. Just had to put in my 2 cents.

By the way, if any of you with a PS3 want to add me, my PSN ID is joshw_24! :D

THEHAWK: Thanks, I played it on "Normal" and it still only took about 9 hours at most. I cant imagine that "Hard" would have added more than an extra hour at most! Glad I could save you the cash though, lol!

RickGrimes: Web of Shadows wasnt a game I enjoyed (all though it had some decent features) but the voice acting made me hate it! Spider-Man's squeeky, nasal voice in particular was the worst that I've ever heard!

BuckyCap: As I said above, we all have certain things about video games that we all enjoy...in my opinion, GTA IV was one of the greatest games ever, but I've spoken to plenty of people who hated it! You're right that Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 were basically just Spider-Man 2 with a different name but I'd love to see a developer take advantage of the PS3's power to finally surpass it! I played on "Normal" and found it challenging but never got stuck - I'm sure that they'll release DLC at some point but I dont plan on waiting to find out, lol! It was a good game for most of the reasons you point out but just wasnt as great as it could or should have been! Glad you enjoyed the review though!

Destroyer: Thanks bud! :) Wow, it's weird how one person can hate a game and another can love it...I thought Web of Shadows was dreadful but I know that there are plenty of other people who, like you, really enjoyed it!

Great in-depth review! :)
From what you've explained the problem seemed like they had the idea(s) for the concept but they didn't really dig deep into it. Each part as you mentioned felt like you were simply going through the motions and that there wasn't really any big gains or losses to have received. The set pieces and looks were great from the trailers and definately added to each respective universes personalities but the challenge was to make each specific Spider-Man's gameplay interesting and still making it fresh. They could've added more story to each universe to try and give the gamer a better insight on what differentiates these Spider-Men from the other other than different voice-actors or different versions. I was surprised that there were barely any cinematics, though it reminds me a bit of Ultimate Alliance where it was only between 5 or 7 cinematics to open or close each section of the game.

Looks like they still have some things to work out in order to make the 'right' Spider-Man game. Wonder if they'd try to do one for the reboot as you mentioned. Oh well, there is still time. My reviews don't seem anywhere near as detailed as yours. :)

Great review @Josh

I haven't gotten around to play this game yet. I too agree that Spider-Man 2 the game was great. What I want Activision to do is basiclly make another Spider-Man 2.

I want a game that's like Spider-Man 2 with Arkham Asylum graphics.(Very detailed and HD New York City) Make the game Bigger and way more longer!!! As for the villians......Make them unpredictable. In all the Spider-Man games, the villians where way to predictable. I want it like in the comics, when Spidey has to "Think" his villians through. Sometimes just webbing up an enemies isn't enough.

You've Been UNMASKED!!!

Great review! I loved ultimate spider-man for ps2. I think if you haven't played it, you haven't fully experienced spider-man. anyway, thanks for saving me the $60 (canadian)!!!

BTW Josh, I'll try and add you if i can ever get around to it. if anyone wants to add me, my gamertag is greenlantern416.

what do you guys think about seeing how many people we can put together for the new DC game? i think it'd be kinda cool knowing how many players are CBMers. it'd be good for the CBM community.

The game obviously lacks squid. I didn't even know about Noir-verse until I had read about this game. Must get my hands on delicious noir comics. I will devour them as heartily as Zack Snyder avoided using the squid in The Watchmen.

Ror - Oblivion rocks! I've just started that again for the 3rd time! Do you have the game of the year addition (black cover)? If not, swap your copy mate it's well worth it. A little tip: murder someone, join the dark brotherhood and concentrate on their missions. This levels you up nicely and if you get all the bonuses you will get some great gear for either use or selling.

I finished playing the game and traded it in to get Halo Reach (For which I have to say is very impressive). The Spiderman game was great, but the only problem is, it's only enjoyable one time. After beating the game, there wasn't much interest in playing it again so I traded it in. When I went to Gamestop I noticed that I wasn't the only one that felt that way, many people who bought the game said the samething. It seems Marvel is trying to compete with Batman Arkham Asylum game, because that game I still have, and it's very enjoyable to play over and over again. Not many superhero games have the affect on people so Batman is the only game so far that is truly a enjoyable superhero game. (CAN'T WAIT FOR BATMAN ARKUM TWO!!!)

Spider-man Shattered Dimensions is a rental game....

Awesome review, Josh! Very economical and informative LOL I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad this game sucks cause it actually made me hesitate for a while between it and one of the games i've been waiting for for the longest time; Castlevania on PS3!!! Glad to say i didn't cave in and pre-ordered CastleV instead :))

Now i hope they take all that backlash and FINALY REALISE what COULD make the best ever Spider-Man game and get crackin' on it ASAP!!! "Replay" sumamabitches!!! It's where it's at and it ain't rocket surgery!!! In our day and age, Free-roam is a must!!! It's the only thing i felt lacked in Arkham Asylum and look at what Eidos is doing with the sequel! That's right, they're hooking us all up! Maybe not the entire city but still. The first company to bring us the combination of InFamous and Batman: AA, will be the VERY FIRST company to truly bring us the best superhero gaming experience EVER!!! Gentlemen, start your engines!!!

JJMeylar- DUDE!!! Then how's "I Frankenstein" going??? That comic rocked and i was so psyched to read that Grevioux was working on bringing it to the big screen!!! Give us some freakin' updates, man!!! :))

@JoshW - Thanks for the great review man....had super high hopes for this one, so I went out and dusted off the old PS2 and played Spider-Man 2 (the best spidey game IMO) and you made me laugh my ass off just now about the girls balloon!! Seriously! I also tried collecting all 150 skyscraper coins, found 148 of them. I [frick]ing zipped across every damn building in that game and could not find them. Also, I [frick]ing hated the ultimate spiderman game, but thats because I hate his design in that game.

Shaman, agree completely. When a game isn't free roam I feel its lacking. Even God Of War which is a blast to play because of the graphics, violence etc, is just a bit too button bashey for me. Arkham was ok in that regard, it wasn't completely sand box play but the areas were large enough for a bit of exploration.

Ron, yep its the game of the year edition. I actually passed on the brotherhood missions for now. I decided to play through once as a good guy then as a right bastard the second time around!

Ron- Sorry bud, first person shooters are definitely not for me, man! I love 3rd person action adventure RPGs. So Castlevania it is! Still patiently and hopelessly waiting on Tenchu for PS3. Now THAT is my favorite and most anticipated franchise ;)

Ror- Yeah! What i loved about Arkham was that the button mashing wasn't "only" mashing. There was a science and skill to it. It made the fighting sequences very interesting and the replay very worth it! It was all about timing versus the agressive mashing that most games offer. I hadn't even realised it until TheMyth explained it to me. I was very surprised when i tried it out LOL. TheMyth, once again.. you were right ;) And of course B:AA also offered us plenty of stealth action so for any self respecting stealth lover such as i, it was a must! Had Activision put out a full Spidey Noir game, it would have raked in the dough!!! This mixmatch of universes was an expected nail in the coffin for me. Sure all of them were cool, then why the hell give them only 3 levels each ON TOP OF not giving us any free-roam!?!?!?! That's just retarded. They shot themselves in the damn foot, is what they did.
SkullFace616
SkullFace616 - 9/15/2010, 11:16 AM
Josh@ I totally agree with your review! The game is very liniar and one thing that sucked for me is, when you have games like Assassins Creed II or Infamous where the character is almost more Spider-Man than Spider-Man is in his own game, (meaning they can climb anything where as Spidey can't) that's not cool. Also, it could have done with being more sandbox as playing as Spidey you should feel freedom. I dunno, it's a fun game, it's a frustrating game due to repetition and crapolla camera angles. For me the Deadpool level was best because I had the freedom to move around the oil rig. And it was slightly more fun... but only slightly. No multiplayer, no free roam no nothing... I'm going to be returning it tomorrow, there's no reason that they should fail to make an awesome Spider-Man game these days as the character and his story have all the ingredients you need for a great video game. I think 6 out of 10 Spideys is about right. It's good but not THAT good. :o)

Thanks guys, I'm glad you enjoyed this review! Hopefully I've saved most of you from buying an incredibly average game...apart from the odd few, the first half of 2010 has been a pretty poor year for games IMO and I thought that this would be a good start for the awesome looking stuff that's coming out in the next few months. Clearly, I was wrong as I can see that most of you who have played Shattered Dimensions also thought it was crap! :P

Shaman - Fallout 3 was 1st or 3rd person and New Vegas is the same. I'm not a fan of overly structured 1st person shooters, tried several and haven't enjoyed them. Even big titles like Call of Duty don't appeal to me. I like to see the character I control and I like freedom to explore and play the game my way!

Ror - I always do that with those sort of games! Nice as pie on the first time through then bad to the bone for the second!
