The New Spider-Man Skipping High School for College?

The New Spider-Man Skipping High School for College?

While Sony has found the new Peter Parker in Andrew Garfield for their 2012 Spider-Man reboot, various beliefs & a specific report include the film's setting from high school to college.

January 11 2010, the day Sony Pictures announced that the film itself, it's star Tobey Maguire, director Sam Raimi, and filmmaking team involved with "Spider-Man 4" was scrapped, and the franchise would get the ol' reboot. Shocking "webhead" fans everywhere by that announcement alone, yesterday Sony announced unknown British actor Andrew Garfield as the new lead for the reboot.

Well in the exact press release that announced Sony moving forward with Spidey's reboot, based on a script by James Vanderbilt, the plot would focus on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems in high school and amazing super-human crises. But now moving forward with Garfield, many believe that the 26 year old is in fact too old to portray a high school student throughout the entire film, and that Sony may be starting the film with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man a high school graduate, and off to college.

Drew McWeeny from HitFix acknowledging this idea, has apparently heard word that the new plan for the reboot would include "Parker (starting) the series as a college student". With no official word of this rumor, it is just that; a rumor.

And Whatever will be the new webslinger's education level, the reboot begins production this December. And with Andrew Garfield leading, the studio can now move on to casting supporting characters around him.

In Marc Webb's direction, Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios. And Spidey swings back into theaters July 3, 2012, in the chronic 3D.

Great find DCMF! :) I've actually come around to the idea of Garfield playing Spider-Man! The fact is, he is actually a great actor and does look the part of a younger Peter Parker. (at least the one seen in Ultimate Spider-Man anyway)

It would almost be a pity to miss out high school and the relationships he develops with characters like Flash and Liz. However, the fact that this guy is 26 and doesnt really look like a teenager does mean it would make more sense for them to kick things off with college instead!

Either way, I'm going to try and keep off the "[frick] the reboot" bandwagon until I hear more about the movie...then I imagine I'll jump straight back on, lol! :D

@JoshW Agreed. Since I didn't like the old franchise, I'm really looking forward to this reboot. It's only because of the old movies that I hate(d) Spider-Man as character. Hopefully they can get it right.

I don't give a damn of this stupid reboot. I'll see it, but I still wouldn't support it!

If they cast someone too old and rumors like this keep shooting around, guess what that means....THIS MOVIE IS GONNA SUCK!!!

I'm looking forward to this. I'll miss Raimi and Company, but this has potential to be something great. I hope they do set it in College. Don't do the origin story bit again. Time to move on from that.

I read about this yesterday. It does seem to make sense with Garfield's casting. I do find it funny that even though some people complained over and over again all this time about the high school setting, and now it might be changed, and then they're still complaining. But I do see that my optimism broke through to some people (wink wink Josh ;))

DCMF@ I didn't really like the originals either. They didn't really give the character justice.

@blee947, probably the millions of people who loved Spider-Man when he was first created or the people who also love Ultimate Spider-Man.Also fans of Spectacular Spider-Man, which I think is the best animated Spidey we've ever had.

I think two of the main reasons to start him off young is that that's how he actually started off in the comics and it keeps the franchise going longer.I can't see them letting the movie character surpass the age of the comic book character, nor can I see an actor in his mid thirties as Spider-Man.An actor/character in his teens could be around for a good 6 films, depending on how much reel/real time passes between movies.

I told you this thing is going to fail from the get go. The truth is, Sam and/or Tobey pi$$ed off Sony and they gave one or both the boot and the other walked because of it. So, Sony called this thing a reboot, just so they could get a new director and actor. But, this is just speculation, of course.

I have my concerns with the reboot, but i'm pretty hopeful it could work.
The Spider-man of the old franchise was just...dull, and thats what turned me off it.
Andy's a great actor though, and feels more fun, so I'll probably prefer him no matter how bad the film.

Chris: You are severely overreacting. Being a college student does not change the ability of kids those ages to relate to him.

@InTylerWeTrust your right man sure he is easier to relate to during the high school years but hell not a whole lot changed for him in the college years. i mean in the comics he is older but he is still the easiest to relate to. He juggles 2 lives and one of them is an average person not a billionaire playboy or soldier he is just the guy you could see on the street and him being spiderman wouldn't even occur to you

Purely speculation and people trying to justify casting an "older" actor to play the role of high schooler. The media is scrambling just trying to make sense of it. Just because fans are saying that, now the media has taken it and ran with it. The rumor has started. 'Someone heard". Yeah, they heard about it because fans all over are bitching about it. Unreliable rumor at this point. A little premature to be posting this one.

@DCMF
Well the third was the worst but they all seemed to miss the point. They all seem to focus on the fact that his life sucks and completely forget his easy going nature.
I hope the reboot has a narration akin to Kick-Ass instaed of the shitty ones in Raimi films who bascillay served to say Hi and Bye to the audience.

Spider man was great and spider man 2 is widely seen as possibly the best comicbook movie ever, spiderman 3 had it's problems, but the series as a whole was great. I personally saw no need for a reboot, and if they do put it in college then it is not a reboot since that's where the last series was. This Concept of rebooting a few years after a succesful franchise just annoys me and that's the main reason I cannot get behind this reboot.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/2/2010, 4:29 PM
DCMF: You really didnt like the past Spider-Man movies? Why!? I mean, I can understand why you didnt enjoy the crappy Spider-Man 3 but the other two were great interpretations of the character, even though they did get more things wrong than they did right IMO! If you want to pick up a brilliant Spider-Man graphic novel, check out "Coming Home" by JMS and John Romita Jr! You'll love it! It's one of the best Spidey stories ever and very easy to follow. (plus it's a few years old so you'll easily pick it up cheap on Amazon or eBay!)

TYLER: Lol, your comment caused me to reconsider and so I'm giving it a chance - thanks! :P It's only what I now realise was a great casting decision that's made me feel a little more positive though...my "[frick] the reboot" attitude could return depending on the cast/villain/story!

To be continued... ;D

If starting in college means skipping the origin story, I am all for it. Why waste another movie in this trillogy on the origin when we'll have seen it 10 years before this comes out? Everyone knows how he gets his powers; do it in Incredible Hulk opening credit recap form and be done with it.
