It was a monumental day for Warner Bros. and for the new DCCU with the confirmed casting of the Suicide Squad. With WB going all out with a top notch cast, it is safe to say that they are throwing all of their chips in with this movie as being the actual catalyst into the evolution of the DCCU. While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be definitive in kick starting the Universe, allowing the viewers to become aware of the heroes and a few villains, while focusing on the main protagonists that the Universe revolves around, it will be the Suicide Squad that will set the tone for the entire Universe going forward.

It’s no secret that WB quietly seethes in anger at the monumental success of what Disney/Marvel has been able to produce over the last few years. The pressure to perform at a higher or at least an equal level is at an all time high especially after the studio released their planned DCCU slate. There have been questions as to whether WB is rushing to try to catch up with Marvel’s success by incorporating so many heroes so early or by betting on BvS to be what they are claiming it is, a game changer in creating a shared cinematic universe for characters many people have grown to love their whole lives. But the real secret chess move by WB/DC is the Suicide Squad, a movie many people were shocked was chosen as the third film to represent the shared universe, a movie that I believe is the REAL game changer.

We’ve heard over the last few years about Sony’s plan to make their own bad guy centric movie, The Sinister Six, and Marvel even flirting around with making a Loki solo movie in answer to the rising popularity of the bad guy in viewership eyes (Side note: I’ve always been partial to baddies since I was a child, hell I loved Hulk Hogan when he turned heel at Bash at the Beach while all of the other children cried). But it was WB/DC who actually took the ball and ran with it. Sporting one of the best bad guy teams outside of maybe Marvel’s The Cabal, they knew they had a winner with this movie.

WB/DC took major steps early on to make sure that this movie has a legitimate shot at becoming a major player in the superhero genre. They signed David Ayer on to direct shortly after they announced their new slate of movies, a man who has had proven success in these style of movies; gritty, villain centered masterpieces. They then took award winning actors and actresses and then attached them to some of the coolest villains in the DC Universe not only to draw in the average non-fanboy viewership but to give the movie a chance to do something that most superhero movies never do: flesh out the villains.

When you look at superhero movies throughout the years rarely do you see a great portrayal of a villain. Great actors are often given the role of the antagonist only to serve as a plot device in a movie rather than enhance the movie itself. In the past few years only Heath Ledger’s The Joker and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki have really set themselves apart from the norm. WB/DC now has a chance to up the ante in regards to this line of thinking. While doing a movie about villains, not only does it give the audience an opportunity to understand the nature of these villains but it also gives the studio a leg up when integrating the villains into the hero centric movies later on down the line because the audience now understands what makes these villains tick. There is no doubt in my mind that the Joker and Harley Quinn will reappear in a Batman movie down the line or seeing Captain Boomerang go up against The Flash at some point. The fun will be in the fact that the audience has grown to love elements of these villains which will make for great tension while enjoying these films.

I believe that this movie will be what makes or breaks the DCCU (I’m more heavily in favor of “makes” but it’s still early in the process). By going from BvS, which is centered on Batman and Superman (and to a lesser extent: Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg), to Suicide Squad, it will allow the juxtaposition of the good and bad to be seen before going forward into the rest of the DCCU movies. If WB/DC can pull this off without a hitch, then we may very well see a big player emerge ready to take no prisoners within the comic book movie world.

Seriously, Sony needs to just drop whatever plans they had for Sinister Six because they can't touch the Suicide Squad!

So strange we're getting Boomerang in this and on TV.

Wasn't barely a few years ago no one would've tried to make him work. Good times.

Great read!!!

This movie is going to be AMAZING!!!! Just think about it. The majority of the cast (including the rumored Waller's) have all been nominated for or won Oscars. With someone like David Ayer, who might even be visiting the Oscars this year, this could be the first CBM to win an Oscar or have one of the actors win an Oscar for their performance in it. Imagine that. That would set DC above Marvel in their 3rd year while Marvel would be in their 8th

So dramatic...

Wonder Woman and Justice League will do just fine regardless of how SS does.

I think the Suicide Squad is a great way for WB to jump forward with there Cinematic Universe. The only thing that DC has done that was disappointing is not including their tv universe with their movie universe. I would have loved to see Stephen Amell play the Green Arrow on the big screen. If DC ever decides to include Arrow in their DCCU, I will have a hard time seeing anyone but Amell play the titular character.

The only negative point in Suicide Squad for me is Jai Courtney. He's an alright actor, but not a particularly special one. Everyone else looks promising, Will Smith could not be a better addition. Some of my friends have also said that they hope the movie doesn't focus on Joker, or sexualize Harley Quinn too much....do comic-book readers actually have a problem with these things? This movie could be amazing, I hope it isn't panned because of something ridiculous

Amazing cast and it can definitely be a game changer.
It's got potential to be amazing.

My only annoyance is that Enchantress is included instead of Killer Frost, she would've been a better fit.

@CherryBomb

I do believe that Enchantress is in for the reason to point out that they are going to connecting JLD and JL and that they will have magic in this universe

Hmm I'm still not entirely convince a JLD movie will happen, it'll be great if it does, but Killer Frost is such a bad-ass character, loved her in Assault on Arkham

Nah, Suicide Squad can tank in quality or box office and the DCCU will keep on going.
Ultimately people care a lot more about heroes than anti-heroes/villains.

WB would never have greenlighted this movie if not for the success of GOTG. Still looks good though.

So Marvel makes a movie where one of the main characters is a talking raccoon and THIS is the game changer?

@MrBender - Stand down, you myopic Marvel fanboy. This is the game changer for the DCCU, as stated in the post, not for CBM's in general... and had nothing to do with Marvel.

These dickriders are getting out of hand....

Great article, I totally agree and I think it's really smart what they're doing. I honestly didn't have much interest in this movie until I read about the Joker being in it, now I'm really excited. Could it suck? Of course, but I love the idea.

This ain't a game changer, its nothing but a stunt that most likely will backfire right on their face.

A bunch of villains working together makes me interested. I don't mind the cast except for the model whose playing The Enchantress.

I think Suicide Squad has the potential to be a big game changer, WB's DC is doing something ambitious rather than doing another Batman solo movie WB'S DC is focusing on other properties.

GOTG was a huge risk and people laughed before the movie came out that it has a talking Raccoon and a talking Tree who says "I am Groot". It was a huge risk that Marvel did by doing a movie on an obscure team that nobody had any clue about but it paid off because of that risk Marvel took they made a lot of box office money.

The game changer is The Joker. No doubt about it casting a new Joker takes some HUGE balls at this point. Not just that but bringing in the Joker in a NON-Batman film shows some amazing stones on the part of the WB. I know it has been quite a few years now, but to trot out ANYONE to follow in Ledger's footsteps is risky move. Forget Batfleck or 2Wonder 2Furious or neurotic Luthor, this is the MOST DANGEROUS casting that Warner Bros. is EVER going to make within this whole project. And bravo to Leto for his bravery in taking this role on because this guy is going to be under a microscrope from now until months after opening day.

For this reason alone, Suicide Squad is going to be WB's MOST IMPORTANT MOVIE TO DATE! I have made no bones that I am a Marvel guy but huge props to the studio, the film maker and the actor for going through with this. I have never said this about a D.C movie but my ticket for opening day is already bought.

@ObjectivelyBiased - I hear ya, its a big move to go with a new Joker right off, but its the right one, imo.

Plus, Ledger was great, but he is not bigger than the character himself. The Joker will be around for many more live action incarnations and will be just fine. Heath was awesome, but not even my fave version, so people will move on.
