CBS Chairman Claims SUPERGIRL Will Attract A "Bigger, Broader Audience" Than GOTHAM

Fighting talk! CBS Chairman Nina Tassler has defended her network's decision to air freshman superhero drama Supergirl up against fellow DC Comics show Gotham on Monday nights. Will it backfire, or does she have a point? Hit the jump to see what she had to say!

Several eyebrows were raised when CBS announced they would be airing their new comic book TV series Supergirl on Mondays, 8pm - placing it directly against FOX's Gotham. Despite receiving a fair amount of criticism from comic book fans, Gotham was by far the most popular superhero show with mainstream audiences last season, averaging 9.5 million viewers in the ratings.

It seems interesting then, that CBS would choose to air their freshman superhero show in the exact same timeslot as their strongest competition. However, CBS Chairman Nina Tassler doesn't appear at all worried about the potential clash. "I think that they're different audiences," she claimed at the Supergirl TCA presentation, "I think Supergirl has a much bigger, broader audience. It's more family entertainment. And they look different, they feel different."

Tassler may be correct about her show's family-friendly appeal, but the early signs from Supergirl seem to suggest it'll appeal more to casual TV audiences as opposed to diehard comic book fans... a bit like Gotham! That said, with options like DVR now widely available, it shouldn't really matter which shows viewers watch live. Which show are you more interested in - if any?

Gotham Season 2 returns to FOX on Monday, September 21, just over a month before Supergirl premieres Monday, October 26 on CBS.

I agree my daughters huge fan's of the Flash have already seen the pilot and loved it. they made it about half way into the second ep. of Gotham last year. To dark, to violent for them. so I can see it becoming a family friendly show for tweens

Picking between Supergirl and Gotham is like picking between a busted toe and a broken finger.

Neither of them sound to great to sit through.

Does Gotham have a hot female protagonist? Nope? Well, there it is.

That's because (going off the pilot) Supergirl features "empowering" you-go-girl and sister-power moments and a cast that looks like they just stepped out of an underwear catalogue (not complaining about Supergirl in very tight shorts myself) and Gotham features freaky looking villains who like to chop their victims in to pieces. Not a tough call to see which will have a "broader" appeal...

I really enjoyed Gotham Season 1, big fan of the show and of Gordon & Bullock, but I can also understand why so many comic book fans don't like it, it isn't as intense & awesome as The Flash or Arrow. Not really hyped for Supergirl, the trailer wasn't that good and in my opinion, Supergirl is really interesting when she is with Clark, and he will definitely not show up in this tv show.

DC has no say in this I'm guessing? Sucks they have two of their shows competing like that.

I know I'm pretty much alone here, but I don't get the hate for Gothom. I really enjoy it. Supergirl on the other hand... Let's just say it has LOTS of room for improvement from the pilot.

I do have a feeling that Supergirl may beat Gotham in the ratings. It's a big family draw.

We'll see.

Networks alone will dictate the outcome of this idiotic thought from CBS. There's no way CBS will be in it for the long haul like FOX will. I don't/ won't watch either show, but know CBS will bail at first sign of failure.

CBS shows usually pull in around like 15M an episode or some shit. And they're all cop shows too

I don't see Supergirl doing that
