In the pantheon of heroes, Superman is considered by most to be the greatest hero of all. His powers make him one of if not the most powerful individual in the universe. Above all else is his strict adherence to his high moral code. Superman’s values outshine his abilities in most cases.

This is exactly what “Superman Vs. The Elite” is about. The movie is based on Action Comics #775 by writer Joe Kelly and artists Doug Mahnke and Lee Bermejo. The comic like the movie focuses on Superman’s effectiveness as a super hero when a new group of super powerful crusaders, known as “The Elite,” appear on the scene. As super heroes, the Elite know no bounds, and are more than willing to kill, even on a massive scale, to stop villainy — putting them on a collision course with the ever-ethical and decidedly non-lethal Man of Steel.

Just like “Batman: Year One” before it, Warner Bros. Animation has done a terrific job taking a story from comics and turning it into a movie. Superman Vs. The Elite does not vary to far from the original comic. There are a few things here and there, but for the most part it is the comic turned into animation form. It is a rare film featuring action, adventure, and a satisfying moral story.

Voice Director Dawn Hershey has found just the right talent for each character with few exceptions. Pauley Perrette is a perfect Lois Lane. Her unique voice has just the right amount of rasp to make her one of the sexiest Lois Lanes in any feature to date. No one can argue that Tim Daly is “THE” Superman when it comes to animation, but George Newbern should now be considered a very close second. He really knows how to work the character and it comes across big time in the movie.

The only real problem with any of the acting is that of Robin Atkin Downes as Manchester Black. Downes was born in England, but his Manchester Black sounds a bit off. He almost sounds like an American trying to do an English accent. For me it just didn’t work, but it doesn’t affect the overall movie too much.

The one thing I couldn’t get over was the portrayal of Jonathan Kent. In the movie, Pa Kent says something along the lines of “you can kick his ass Clark”. In the comic, “ass” is not used in the scene. I am of the mind that Jonathan Kent probably would not say that and it sort of took me out of the scene.

The Elite make formidable foes for Superman in this movie. Their belief that Superman’s ways are outdated and that people want evil to be dealt with swiftly and definitively, conflict with that of Superman’s view that everyone deserves a chance and that life is precious. Throughout the course of the film, you see the people of the world cheering on the Elite and proclaiming that Superman’s ways are no longer effective for today’s criminal. The results make for an interesting story that culminates with a Superman that you do not want to mess with.

The original comic (which was printed in 2001) was a direct response to the comics of that time like The Authority and The Punisher. It was a one issue comic that sticks out as one of the best Superman comics of all time. Action Comics #775 might the definitive comic to exemplify what Superman is all about. Like the comic this movie defines the character of Superman.

Is it a 5-star movie? No, but not many movies are worthy of five stars. Is it one of the better DC Animated Movies? Yes it is! If you are a Superman fan or fan of super hero movies, then you will definitely want to add this one to your collection. If not then it is still well worth a Redbox rental.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new, PG-13 rated film arrives June 12, 2012 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD, On Demand and for Download. Both the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD will include an UltraViolet™ Digital Copy.

I didn't think this looked that great but I still think it will be good. As long as it is not like All star Superman because that one was not very good except for how it portrayed Lex Luthor that was cool. Good review tho.

To be honest I was not overly excited for this one either, but after watching Thursday, I immediately bought Action Comics #775 on comiXology.

Much, much better than what I was expecting.

Not looking forward to this animated feature as much as some of the others in the past. I'm sure I'll check it out regardless.

This film was horrid, been up for download all week. Looked like animation for kindergarten TV. Superman may be the figure head for DC comics but he is one cheesy and boring Superhero in this day and age.

Wait, it wasn't a response to The Punisher (which isn't a superhero and it is way older than the nineties) but just to the nineties new superheroes like The Authority, Youngblood, etc.
Because while The Punisher was never viewed as a superhero (Ennis didn't even try to write him like a good guy), those others did.

By the way I loved both the comic and the animated film, and the line about "kick his ass" may have been in the author's orginal intention but not put in the comics for censorship reasons (you know how simetimes editors censor trivial things only to let other pass).

Curiously, the ELITE is a knock-off of the AUTHORITY, and poor fellas, they won´t see the light of day in animation.

Yeah, agreed the English accents are terrible, surely not done by anyone from Manchester...

But loved Supe's saying "Wankers" hehehe...

It was no different to any other predictable Saturday morning cartoon to me, except for the word 'wanker' got used a few times!

Captain America was never hated in Brazil, he was published monthly in cheap collected editions in a smaller 100 pages format, pubished altogether with Black Panther, Falcon and others.

Here in the 1980´s we still had the crap 1960´s Marvel semi-animated movies, so everyone knew Captain America.

This is what our Superman that we all know and love is about. just because he's a"boyscout", doesn't mean he'll be pushed around. The comic was great and the Animated version looks good.

When I first saw clips I wasn't really looking forward to it. Not being one to judge a book by it's cover, I sat down and watched it, and it was great! It did a great job of being current and relevant to the way the world works today, and reinforcing that people still need heroes like Superman.

I saw the movie. And I have to say that it is a good movie. Lois Lane annoyed the hell out of me. Over the top sassiness was a bit much even for Lois Lane. But all in all, the movie was pretty good. I truly enjoyed it. The last fight scene was pretty damn dramatic, I thought to myself "Wow! This is what kids are going to be seeing??" I think it was a bit traumatizing I'm telling you guys.

I don't remember another cartoon that had something like that happen. I mean, it all turned out well in the end. I really appreciated the really deep message trying to be said here. The moral was on solid ground and they gave a good portrayal of Superman.

I also forgot to mention the really cool intro to the movie which is a nice throwback to SuperFriends!

@Just1Superguy, yes I like the fact that he won't wait too long to show them he won't be messed with. I don't know how long you have been reading Supes, but the original Golden age version, and if you have read "Thy Kingdom Come", this is how I always thought Superman should be portrayed.

@paulyd3: Times have changed, not everyone wants to see Superman's undies anymore. Seriously, it's silly to the point of being ridiculous. Why they made superheroes wear underwears outside will always be a mystery to me. But people's tastes have changed. Not everyone likes the classic look anymore. Get over it.
TheAmazingAvenger
TheAmazingAvenger - 6/9/2012, 9:05 PM
But seriously, why change Superman's costume in the comics if they're not gonna apply it to all of their other media? DC had the balls to revamp his looks... Why didn't they have the balls to update his look on the cartoons?

thedude2936 - 6/9/2012, 9:24 PM
good review, i didnt like the artwork in the clips but i always said id still give it a chance, cause i'll watch most anything about superman. Been a diehard supes fan for all of my life. @ paulyd3 its no use man, DC's apparently not changing his suit back, so hating on the new 52 and mos suits are just a moot point at this current juncture.

@paulyd3 - Alex Ross paints a fantastic classic Superman but to be honest I prefer the only thing good to come out of all that infinite crisis crap, and that's the look of Superman Prime..

Superman Prime's costume shuns the outdated and pointless underpants held up by a belt thing and tones down the pastel bright colours of the classic suit. It does however retain the majesty of the cloak and the blue of the costume in a much more modern deep, dark presentation. The "Man of Steel" label is solidified with the steel coloured badge and wristbands. This is the look DC should have went with for the movie and the comics.
