SUPERMAN: LEGACY Was In The Works Months Before DC Studios Was Formed; James Gunn Teases Wonder Woman Plans

DC Studios boss James Gunn has confirmed that Superman: Legacy was in the works months before DC Studios was created, while also teasing plans for Wonder Woman in the DCU moving forward. Check it out!

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn continues to tease fans on social media with minor new pieces of intel about the DCU's future, but his latest comments about 2025's Superman: Legacy are sure to raise some eyebrows.

According to the filmmaker, he was first tapped to write that movie over six months ago. He'd later reiterate that both the reboot and his Creature Commandos animated TV series were in the works prior to the formation of DC Studios, suggesting Warner Bros. was mulling over multiple Superman projects.

While we don't have a definitive timeline, it seems the studio may have turned to Gunn when the various Man of Steel 2 pitches they entertained - with Henry Cavill set to return as Kal-El - failed to impress. With that in mind, plans to ditch the British actor both before and after his Black Adam cameo may have been discussed much longer than we realised.

Whatever the case may be on that front, Gunn has also teased plans for Wonder Woman in the DCU.

We're really no closer to learning whether Gal Gadot will continue playing the Amazon warrior after DC Studios have Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 pitch the thumbs down. However, casting a younger actress in the role isn't outside the realm of possibility when Gadot is already 37.

Remember, the plan is for the DCU's Superman and Batman to be more youthful than their previous iterations, so it only makes sense for Diana Prince to follow suit.

Gunn didn't get into specifics on that front, but did at least confirm he has plans for the hero moving forward.

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Well good. Don’t rest too long on Wonder Woman. Paradise Lost probably won’t scratch too many itches.

@TheUnworthyThor - From all the projects they announced it's probably the one I least care about together with Waller. When more information comes out about them I may change my mind, but I don't see the appeal.

More proof that WB had no concrete plans with Cavill. Boy they really dicked him around. I still hold out hope for a Kingdom Come/infinite crisis return in some years.

Regarding wonder woman, I bet it comes down to Gadots salary. They'll either wait until her contract expires to replace or see if she's haggled down first.

@UniqNo - think it's more dependent on reception to this year's movies.

If the characters still get massive positive reception, I think they will keep them around. If not, they reboot. Meaning Gadot would be out as well.

@UniqNo - maybe those rumors may have been true about Henry: that he was difficult to work it. Perhaps that had a factor to play in his departure.

@UniqNo - The problem was they giving hope to both him and his fans, it is obvious the moment JL bombed, they were going to reboot the whole thing.

@UniqNo -Yawn. Henry isn't owed anything. its also not like the guy is this can't miss actor in that role. his accent was awful.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/20/2023, 11:14 AM
@Arthorious - Also a possibility, but he's been dicked around for sure. I can imagine they didn't want him around as he was quite open on his opinion of the direction they took superman which he hated and didn't fit with the character he wanted to portray. He even went as far as saying he liked how Whedon was trying to improve his appearance (mustashe aside). The final whedon cut was just too inconsistent.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I think Hamada was trying to correct the ship, but Cavill wasn't up for cameos after the way they treated his character. I think he wanted a proper sequel, especially after the extra dark version in BvS and the 5 minutes he had in JL.

I feel he only agreed to Black Adam after trusting in his agent and being told he could announce it. But the guys who were in charge of DC before Gunn and Safran didn't have a clue. Rock tried, to his credit and pushed for it, but he doesn't hold any weight any more.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/20/2023, 11:19 AM
@futurekubrick - I agree he's not owed, he was dealt the wrong end of the stick. I still think he deserved another shot before we can definitley class him as either a good or a bad superman, i just don't think he was given a fair shot to play him post origin story.
Conquistador
Conquistador - 2/20/2023, 11:33 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I feel that could be part of it, but even under old leadership that movie was greenlit and negotiated...at least for Gal, more so around the time they paid her off when they allowed WW84 to comeout the same time as theatres during covid. https://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/gal-gadot-reportedly-20m-creative-control-woman-3/

The fact that Jenkins is out and Gal hasn't spoken a word since the reshuffle makes me think she's trying to salvage something rather than they allow her contract to expire.

bkmeijer1 - 2/20/2023, 11:52 AM
@UniqNo - well, that news does come from DanielRPK, so I instantly doubt how credible it is.

That said, it could indeed be the case that contractual obligations do play a part

@bkmeijer1 - true, but this was also mentioned in THR's article when Jenkins was shown the door.

@UniqNo - Hamada's dumb ass had the main DCU Batman in his 70s, then dies, and Batgirl takes over the mantle.

Also Supergirl was taking Superman's place.

Also Superman was either a black race swapped version of Clark Kent, or he was an entirely different person altogether and there's NO Clark Kent in the DCEU.

Hamada had no respect for the DC characters and no creative vision. He was just a businessman selling out DC to any random director.

@UniqNo - now THR, that is a source I do believe
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/20/2023, 3:22 PM
@UniqNo - His agent is (or was) Rock's ex-wife, they are the ones who told him this wasnt just a cameo, because he was coming back, because Black Adam was relaunching the DCEU, and the Rock was going to be put in charge, and yada yada...none of that was true.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 2/21/2023, 8:39 AM
@UniqNo - I agree, I think he had better opinions and they didn’t want to hear them and thus dubbed him difficult to work wotht

So Superman movie is about the past and Supergirl one is about the future, and they are doing this before even introducing Wonder Woman. I have zero faith in this. I love DC and have taken the good with the bad all my life but this is 1st time I'm very concerned about the future of it.
Godzilla2000Zer
Godzilla2000Zer - 2/20/2023, 7:13 AM
@WarMonkey - To be fair we weren't given the complete slate for Gods and Monsters in January so a Wonder Woman film may still be in there it's more likely that since they haven't made a final decision yet on whether Gal will continue the role and considering they passed on the latest script back in November the current one might not even be done yet.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/20/2023, 7:21 AM
@WarMonkey - Supergirl is set in the future? Where'd you get that?

Anyway, Gunn has already said that this new DC Universe will have many settings across many time periods. Legion of Superheroes and Batman Beyond are even possible in the new DCU.
Dabs
Dabs - 2/20/2023, 7:36 AM
@WarMonkey - This is the first time? really? Nothing Snyder did made you worry? lol k
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 2/20/2023, 7:44 AM
@ObserverIO - I didn't mean it was set in the future I meant the title is the same as the DC animated one that kicked off their new universe. So Women of Tomorrow would refer to Supergirl leading the way into the new DC movie universe. "... of Tomorrow" has historically referred to the start of the story while Legacy is about telling the story of past events. Before Gunn studio insiders were saying DC's plans were to shelve Superman and promote Supergirl to his position. So this is concerning if the new universe isn't focusing on Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman which should be where all others stories branch-off from.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 2/20/2023, 7:54 AM
@Dabs - There was a lot of bad about Snyder stuff, but also a lot that was great. One thing he did right though was focusing on the Trilogy and expanding the world out from them. Like, DC has a ton of great characters but when compared to the main ones they are all basically side characters (not being demeaning, I love them). Others characters get to shine only when the Trilogy isn't around. They are the foundation of what DC comics is.

DC is unlike Marvel because of the power level of their main heroes being basically gods where Marvel has a plethora of great and powerful characters that could take the lead in any fight. I think Batfleck said it best in the Snydercut with something like "Without Superman there is no Justice League" before confronting Darkseid's minions.

I will never understand these twitter people that post questions at filmmakers.

Does Wonder Woman have a future in your plans? Is she going to be abandoned for a long time.

Like this guy. He was just sitting at home and thought, 'i'll ask James Gunn about the future of Wonder Woman'. What does he do with that information. It's so weird to me.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/20/2023, 6:53 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - I sometimes wonder about stuff like that as well. And since Gunn is known to actually answer on twitter, might as well shout your shot.

Maybe the guy is a massive Wonder Woman fan, and know he knows there is something to look forward to.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/20/2023, 7:24 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - Also the information is already out there that there is a Paradise Lost series based on Paradise Island. He really thinks the answers gonna be 'No'?

No, we're gonna do Justice League without Wonder Woman. It's an all-male team. Paradise Island ends witha pregnant Hippolyta getting her head lopped off. The end.
TheGrayGhost
TheGrayGhost - 2/20/2023, 8:38 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - Hopes he'll answer and maybe somehow go viral, get a bump in followers, or just boredom. I mean he ended up being mentioned places like here, whatever that is worth.

If the NEXT Superman movie is great, Gunn is golden.

If it blows.... DCFU dies twitching yet again.

Wow. What WILL we get....

TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/20/2023, 8:54 AM
@DocSpock - Gunn makes script in weeks, dometimes days (or even hours), the fact that he is taking so long to finish this script (over 6 months) shows he knows the whole shared universe is riding on this.

Very true.

Doesn't suprise me. Think it was already known Gunn was working on a show, so stands to reason that show was Creature Commandos.

As for Superman, I didn't expect that. Guess WB was already toying with the idea of a reboot, even if they weren't already with the two black Supermen projects.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/20/2023, 7:27 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Three reboots. Four if you count the Man of Steel sequel. Lol, WB, never change.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/20/2023, 7:30 AM
@ObserverIO - Four Batmen and four Supermen? That was never gonna work.

None of the Supermen's movies ever got close to reality though (except this one now). WB indeed never changes.

@bkmeijer1 - I was a little surprised too. Wasn’t he offered a Superman movie when he came over from Marvel.
