Ror Reviews: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES - "Rise Of The Turtles"

Nickelodeon aired the opening 2 eps of their new TMNT cartoon over the weekend, and high ratings have already ensured a second season. Early footage left many cold, but how did the latest animated outing for the "heroes in a half-shell" go down with this lifelong fan?..

Review Opinion

When I was a kid, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a bit of an obsession. Action figures, duvet covers, lunch boxes..you name it. The original cartoon ignited my interest, but even as I got a bit older the various comics/movies/animated series based on the characters provided a slightly edgier take in some cases, and my so it continued - I remain a big fan, even if I've grown out of the Raphael pajamas.

So when this new Nickelodeon cartoon was announced and we got a look at some footage, I was interested to see what they'd deliver , but didn't really have high hopes that it would be anything I'd be too invested in. The Turtles are, after all, primarily aimed at kids, and the show looked fine for something to attract a new generation of fans, but to me this just looked a bit TOO childish for me to find appealing. However, as we know, the best children's entertainment can also be enjoyed by adults, and I'm very happy to report that this new TMNT series is a very pleasant surprise.

The tale told in these first two episodes doesn't really stick to any established canon, and instead is a bit of a mishmash. There are "The Krangs" instead of Krang, April O'Neil is a teenager, no Casey Jones etc - but in most respects everything is familiar enough. Mikey, Doin, Raph and Leo - brought to life brilliantly by the voice cast - all have their usual character traits and origins present and correct, and there is some great, at times genuinely funny, banter between them. The opening story - which sees the foursome travel to the world above for the first time and get wrapped up in a kidnapping - is nothing to write home about, but the plot thicken by the end when Shredder appears, so hopefully things will pick up.

The animation takes a bit of getting used to though, and after two episodes I'm not sure I'm a huge fan. At times it looks great, then others just a tad too obviously computer animated - give me hand drawn any day. Still, for the most part it works, and like I said, I reckon after another few episodes it will be something most will come around to.

Very funny, well written, and engaging. Those hoping for a slightly grittier take on the heroes in a half-shell will obviously be disappointed (although on Nickelodeon, what were you expecting anyway?), but I think only the most nit-picky fan won't find something to enjoy, and it is definitely a great way to introduce the youngsters to these great characters. Bring on episode 3.

Nice review, I saw the two episodes and I was surprised with what I saw too. They weren't perfect (then again, what is perfect) but I think they did a good job in combining the comedy with the seriousness. I think it possesses elements of both the 1980s cartoon and the 2003 cartoon. The Shredder is human, but he has the attitude and seriousness of his Utrom counterpart. I'm looking forward to what happens next.

Also, I have a theory. Splinter said that when he was human, he had a baby daughter, so I'm thinking maybe she didn't die with her mother, was raised by the Shredder, and became this cartoon's version of Karai. It's a thought, who knows if it's true.

Show is good entertainment for kids mainly but of your a turtle fan it's cool to watch.

Major annoyance is Splinter being bigger than turtles,I realize he was once human but he no longer looks like a grizzled rat but a tall, sleek creature with some fancy coloring & way too long beard.

Hopefully Casey Jones will pop up in the future.

Still not the biggest fan of the animation style,
but it was actually entertaining to see the new take on the turtles.

You can really see a slightly different spin on the various personalities of the characters and how they are slowly on their way to becoming the turtles we know and love.

We are seeing them at the beginning and perhaps if the show really takes off this could be Nickelodeons own Star Wars Clone Wars in which more character development will occur over time with the characters growing up with the views i.e. April at some point be old enough to become a reporter.

Maybe I'm thinking too far ahead, but maybe this show has that sort of potential.

I wish it luck!

TMNT 2003 is one of my favorites but so far this show is far better. Best CGI cartoon ever made for sure!

Anybody else notice he wrote Mikey DOIN Raph and Leo? Mikey gets around for being a Nickelodeon show haha Yes, I'm childish I know, but it gave me a giggle! I surprisingly really enjoyed this show, and it has now joined Young Justice, and Green Lantern (Another show I wasn't keen on before watching) on my DVR list:) Good review Ror!

I was obsessed with the ninjas if micheal bay ruins them I honestly will be disappointed.
Every one bashes bay wayyyyyy to much. Transformers was great, the second one was dumb but the third one could have been reallllly good if they didn't spend thirty minutes in the falling building. Lol but when I hear him say that he wants them to be aliens?? I get nervous

Thoughts?

Has anyone here read the original comic? I think they should shake this up and go the whole, complete ninja route. Put it on Adult Swim.

I just watched this yesterday, and I thought it was a good take for a "new universe" (if any of you saw Turtles Forever, you know what I mean...).

I just wish the Season 2 opener of Green Lantern would show up online already...

They aren't aliens so it's a win. I really liked the almost remix of the old cartoon's title music. Turtles in a half shell and all that. The big two things the show did change (Splinter's origin and April's age) I can live with.

Agree with Grif -_-

CGI cartoons are crap and cheap.
And that style makes me puke.

Grif, seriously man all I ever read from you is trash talk remarks and I think a few of us will agree it's just stupid at this point. If all you have is negative crap to toss at at things just because you don't care for it do us all a favor and just shut the [frick] up and keep it to yourself.

Lol@ users who still get mad at grif. Maybe you should get over the "straight to the point" opinions of others. He's not gonna change and he's not leaving so just don't let it bother you.

anywho. I watched this saturday and really enjoyed it. I'm a child of the 80's and TMNT was my life. I even like the look of the show. I could do without the Krang change and April being a teen, but i'll get over it.

I saw the show, and thought it was pretty good except a few things like expression lines and April being a kid. Got to admit it was a suprise, thought it would suck Grif's red rocket.

Grif is a troll that should have been booted from the site a LONG TIME AGO.

being a fan since the 80's when i was a kid, i thoroughly enjoyed the 1st two episodes, didn't mind the minor changes & had a few good chuckles in the first few minutes alone. Take notes, Bay.

I've been reading cbm for the last 10 years . It just seems like they are doing it to p!ss us off.

Glad to hear it's turned out ok so far. I'll give it a chance. I can deal with minor updates. It happens. To be honest I grew up on the 80's fun turtles not the dark original comics so I don't mind a more kids version. Score!
