Shawn Levy On What Happened To His Flash Movie, Could He Go Back To It?

Back in 2007 Real Steel director Shawn Levy was attached to helm The Flash for WB. Now speaking to Collider he describes what happened and suggests the possibility is there for his return should the movie go forward..

In an interview with Collider Levy speaks very openly about being attached to direct The Flash for WB. He reveals that he was offered the job but wanted a bit more experience before taking on that type of big movie. With Real Steel sure to be a big hit could he take another look at bringing the fastest man alive to the big screen? He certainly doesn't rule it out..

I was attached to The Flash. You know…I’m going to give you the candid answer. After Night at the Museum, I got offered The Flash. I was like, “Well, first of all, what?! Why?” I know Night at the Museum was a big commercial movie and had a lot of visual effects, but… Look, I love The Flash. Mostly because it was this nickname I had in my youth. And I liked it because I liked the comics. But I was a sprinter. And I was really into running fast. It’s [frick]ing geeky. Attached to The Flash, I oversaw a draft for about three-and-a-half months. And, at that time, I learned two things. One, if you’re going to take on a character like that… I was still the family comedy guy. And I just felt like, I gotta get a few more under my belt before I can claim the legitimacy of making a movie like that. And that’s what I’m doing, to be very honest. I’m not saying I have a master plan to go back to The Flash. In the end, The Flash went away because Justice League was gonna happen. And then it didn’t happen. To my great dismay, because I would have been first in line for that, too. Is it still….I don’t even know.

When asked if he would be willing to go back to The Flash should WB bring it to him again he said..

The truth is, we never got the Flash script right. I still love that character. I’ve had no talks. But I’m waiting and seeing. In two weeks we’ll see what the fallout from Real Steel is. I do know that there may very well be a comic book hero in my future.

Sounds like he wants to do it to me. Last update on The Flash movie came from writer Marc Guggenheim who let us in on how the script was progressing. Apparently it's a pretty bizarre sounding mix of sports movie and police procedural. But of course things may have changed since then and we just haven't heard. The movie may not even be on WB and DC Entertainment's current radar anymore. But that seems unlikely. One way or the other, how would you feel about Levy getting the gig?

Shawn Levy- Night at the Museum, Date Night, Real Steel. Not the right guy for THE FLASH. Still, glad to see that even he recognizes that and is trying to get more experience before attempting it.

First what they need to do is fix Green Lantern in a sequel. If they can do that THEN they should move onto the Flash and Wonder Woman.

Freaking Marvel banged out Thor, Captain America, and Avengers preproduction at the same time. DC and Warner need to step up their game.

The Dark Knight Rises and the Man of Steel should be their stepping stones to these other characters. What they shouldn't do is try to tie them all together as they come out, like Marvel did, because obviously that would be too much for them considering the trouble they're having already.

They should just pick a few top characters, introduce minor characters within those movies. Then make a Justice League movie. You think they would learn from Marvel by now.

The Flash Could be such a great movie if treated properly.
His villans kinda suck but with a good writer they could make it epic ass hell. Props for dude realizing he might not be the right fit given his resume.

[frick] a GL sequel for now..I think The Flash is better fit for the big screen.See what Geoff Johns and Mark Millar are doing. Look to Francis Manapul's work for how the superspeed CGI should look.AND DO NOT ASSUME THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL !

I hope WB learn from their big green mistake from earlier this year. Flash could be the perfect launch pad for a DCMU in the way GL never was. As for GL, the more I think of it, the more I hate that film. They should just reboot it by having an older actor in a JLA movie and spin off to a new series with a new cast, and skim through the origin in flashbacks to establish new continuity.

As for Levy, he's not right for now, but he has potential. And its nice to see him show some humility and modesty, unlike Nicholas 'I was born to direct the wrong actress as Wonder Woman' Refn.

WB should do the opposite of Marvel. They should make a JLA or JSA movie and then give each of the characters their own movie using the same actors in the same universe. Maybe that would work for them.

Concern for a character??? Honesty?!??? This only makes me root for him. Get the DETAILS right with this script and I think it could be an amazing movie... For example, in Grif's vid above, the Flash "flinched". Why the heck would he EVER do that? He wouldn't have to. I think the scene in Megamind where the original hero reflected should be a starting point on how it should go with the scarlet speedster. My two Lincolns...

Now without my fanboy hormones making me want to scream YES again and again. I'm going to say no to the director then though his very familiar with the character, I just see WB being a massive arse and taking control of the project. Unless the director mans up, I don't see Flash happening any faster then a Wonder Woman movie coming out.

Just gimme my Flash film and do it right. Levy wouldn't be bad, I think Brad Bird would be pretty good too.

Edgar Wright could do a fine job directing a movie that i'm guessing needs to be fast-paced and action packed. As for the villains, Spin has the potential to be the most "filmable" flash enemy.
Who do you think should play the flash btw? Ryan Kwanten anyone?

JWStubner - 9/26/2011, 6:08 AM
I don't know who should direct it BUT I do believe Ryan Gosling is a lock for Barry Allen. Plus the script should focus more on the CSI side of the character. Easier to make a good movie if it's more like a crime drama than a superhero movie. Don't get me wrong. The Speed force and what not should still be all over the film but the public didn't take to well to Green Lantern so I would make a Superhero under the guise of a crime drama similar to what Nolan did with Batman.

JWStubner - 9/26/2011, 6:33 AM
Odds are this movie will NEVER be made unfortunately. With Green Lantern pretty much BOMBING I'm sure DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are less than eager to put anyone else on the big screen other than Batman and Superman. Plus when The Dark Knight Rises with it's $250 million budget doesn't make nearly as much as it's predecessor WB will probably freak out and god forbid if Man of Steel doesn't make AT LEAST $500 million Warner Bros. will probably put a complete halt on DC Entertainment's planned films. I hope to god I'm wrong but it seems all to likely.

@JWStubner

I'm not too familiar with the actual Flash books but I agree CBMs need to explore more storytelling genres.
I'm always amazed by the negativity towards TDK's crime drama approach. Most dissapointing CBMs have simply followed the basic superhero formula.

Regarding the speed force I always wonder how it would be depicted since everything the Flash does is at super speed. The old school blur effect would get old very quickly

He might be the right guy. We didn't know what to expect from Nolan. Singer did great on X-Men and failed us on Supes. Campbell did a "Kick-Ass" Bond, but blew it with Green Lantern. Real Steel looks good. Maybe this guy good give us an action-packed Flash w/o having a whole lot of experience.

Well, don't know if this goes here or whatever. Just wanted to share. An office pal was about to quit the job 'cause he was aproached to be involved in the post production of the Flash Movie (he works in post production, of course... removing green backgrouds, tracking and stuff). I'm not saying the Flash is already in production or even in pre-production. But I think they are already making deals to give the Go to the Movie.
