Created by Robert Kirkman alongside artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Invincible ran for 144 episodes across 15 years. Putting a fresh spin on superheroes, the gloriously violent adventures of Mark Grayson turned the series into a bona fide hit.
Prime Video has adapted the comic into an animated series which, after its first season, proved itself another win for the Image Comics franchise. However, talks of a live-action adaptation have persisted for years.
That's easier said than done, unfortunately, especially with R-Rated violence and a lot of crazy characters. The budget for a movie like that would be sizeable and many studios remain cautious about taking a shot on a non-Marvel or DC Comics IP like Invincible.
Talking to Screen Rant, Kirkman shared a very promising update which suggests the movie might have started taking shape.
"With the strikes and everything, it’s all stalled, and rightly so," he explains. "Everybody’s doing a great thing trying to make sure that future generations get to be able to work and thrive and survive in this industry."
"Everything’s been put on pause, but it’s something that I know Universal is very invested in, and it’s something that we’ve been working on behind the scenes up to this point. Hopefully, I’ll be able to answer this question in a more answerable way at some point in the future."
So, nothing is set in stone but this bodes well. Universal is a studio looking for new franchises now Jurassic World has wrapped up (Fast & Furious is next) so the ultra-violent Invincible movie many of you have been waiting for may well be on the way.
However, we can't discount the possibility it will forego all that blood in order to meet a PG-13 rating. The story could still work without the gore but some longtime fans will inevitably be disappointed if that happens.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
