INVINCIBLE Creator Robert Kirkman Shares Promising Update About Live-Action Movie Plans

Invincible has become a hit animated series on Prime Video but the comic book's co-creator, Robert Kirkman, has now shared a promising update about live-action plans for the property. Check it out...

Created by Robert Kirkman alongside artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Invincible ran for 144 episodes across 15 years. Putting a fresh spin on superheroes, the gloriously violent adventures of Mark Grayson turned the series into a bona fide hit.

Prime Video has adapted the comic into an animated series which, after its first season, proved itself another win for the Image Comics franchise. However, talks of a live-action adaptation have persisted for years.

That's easier said than done, unfortunately, especially with R-Rated violence and a lot of crazy characters. The budget for a movie like that would be sizeable and many studios remain cautious about taking a shot on a non-Marvel or DC Comics IP like Invincible

Talking to Screen Rant, Kirkman shared a very promising update which suggests the movie might have started taking shape.

"With the strikes and everything, it’s all stalled, and rightly so," he explains. "Everybody’s doing a great thing trying to make sure that future generations get to be able to work and thrive and survive in this industry."

"Everything’s been put on pause, but it’s something that I know Universal is very invested in, and it’s something that we’ve been working on behind the scenes up to this point. Hopefully, I’ll be able to answer this question in a more answerable way at some point in the future."

So, nothing is set in stone but this bodes well. Universal is a studio looking for new franchises now Jurassic World has wrapped up (Fast & Furious is next) so the ultra-violent Invincible movie many of you have been waiting for may well be on the way.

However, we can't discount the possibility it will forego all that blood in order to meet a PG-13 rating. The story could still work without the gore but some longtime fans will inevitably be disappointed if that happens.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

This could work, I vote the guy who does all the Shin movies. Low budget but they're fantastic! His newest was Kamen Rider

This idea that a property hasn't truly "made it", until it has a live-action movie adaptation needs to stop.

Does anybody even want this? They're already in the midst of an adaptation that is (so far) superior to the source material. There is absolutely no way they could come close to this in live action.

@blazebyrne - I do. Another way to enjoy an awesome property.

No one wants this. At least I don’t think so.

@GhostDog - i only agree with you on the fact that they have already shown so much craziness on the cartoon side of things that we would lose a ton of cool shit because of budget constraints in a live action film. i would totally still watch it for sure.

@supermanrex - exactly. I think it undermines the animation a bit. The cartoon has done such a masterful job that I cannot see how a live action would bring anything new

@GhostDog - People think they want this, but studios/actors haven't proven they can or know how to pull it off. I remember the cringe that was the Bleach live action adaptation. You still can't do a tear drop in live action last I checked, unless you go into Spider-Man territory, like they do with his eyes, and ask the audience to suspend disbelief.

While I'm a big fan of live action takes on things, I can't help but feel there isn't much of a point to doing one when the animated series literally just started, and is excellent.

A live action film would have to cut out an extremely large amount of the story, which would make the film feel a bit lack luster. And like someone mentioned above they'd have to tone down the violence as well which would end up robbing it of even more.

Probably best to just let it play out in animation, and then revisit the idea a ways down the road when the series isn't so fresh in our minds.

Just make a live-action trailer, to convince the GA to buy tickets, then pull a switcheroo and release an animated movie.
