ECHO Leak Reveals Daredevil's Original Role In The Series And A Much Different Ending - Possible SPOILERS

We've known for a while that Charlie Cox's Daredevil once had a bigger role in Echo and a recent leak sheds more light on the Man Without Fear's scrapped presence in the series and a different finale...

Echo underwent a great many changes before arriving on Disney+. For starters, it lost an episode and sweeping changes were made to the story either through reshoots or during post-production (which is the norm for Marvel Studios but a move which still suggests the Hawkeye spin-off needed some help).

While Charlie Cox's Daredevil was put front and centre in Echo's marketing campaign, the Man Without Fear's screentime amounted to no more than 90 seconds.

We've seen chatter about an alternate ending with Maya Lopez returning to New York City and potentially being recruited by 'ol Hornhead, but scooper @CanWeGetToast has today shared some major new details about his original role in Echo

It's said that, in an earlier iteration of the series, Maya would have had a contact in New York City - Matt Murdock - keeping her up to date. In the second episode, she was going to reach out to Matt to see if anyone in the Big Apple had picked up on the fact she'd bombed one of The Kingpin's armouries. It's then he notified her that she has only a couple of days before his men show up.

In episode five, Maya was going to ask Matt who was making a play for Wilson Fisk's territory and, in the finale - the scrapped sixth episode - the anti-hero was set to text her new ally and tell him to "do it," meaning he should round up his friends in New York City to take down The Kingin's empire.

Eventually, we'd have got a big reveal with Matt bailing Maya out after she shot Fisk - it seems the plan was for her to have been arrested rather than escape - and helping her strike a deal with the FBI to provide them with the information they need to take down the villain once and for all.

Echo supposedly ended with Maya returning to New York (with Bonnie at her side) to deal with some unfinished business and set up a role in Daredevil: Born Again

This makes for an interesting read but, as it's largely taken out of context, it's hard to say how any of it links up with what we did see in Echo. We recently learned that Maya initially sided with The Kingpin, faking her uncle's death to prove her loyalty; that sounds like something a person who is undercover might do!

Chances are we'll never know what Marvel Studios originally had planned for Echo. This version clearly wasn't working, anyway, and Kevin Feige must have concluded it was worth cutting Daredevil and simplifying the story.

As things stand, we don't expect Maya to make an appearance in Daredevil: Born Again.

I can see why feige had a problem with it.

It makes daredevil in the series make sense and actually holds echo accountable for her actions 🤣

@Origame - The show does hold her accountable.

@dagenspear - she straight up murdered at least a half dozen dudes when she bombed that warehouse. She isn’t held accountable for that at all.

@Origame - Then the gripe would just be the show can't stand without Daredevil and become like the Iron Boy (Spider-Man) claims from before.

@EskimoJ - id argue that's more so the case with the show we got. In universe daredevil being there made zero sense, and he could have been cut without anyone noticing. But they kept him in so they could advertise the show as including him.

At least in this original version he's a supporting player who's only there to help.

This could have worked but really sets up too much strife against Kingpin. I prefer the version we got where we got a cool fight versus daredevil and that's it til his show. This is not the daredevil, it's Echo

@Vigor - ditto. Having DD pop in out of nowhere for just that sequence was a good call.

I wish they would do stuff like that more often in these shows. Make the world actually feel lived in by the heroes, rather than them only popping in when they're heavily included in the plot.
EskimoJ
EskimoJ - 1/17/2024, 12:59 PM
@RedFury - Similar feel. The way they brought through Daredevil had him feeling like more of an overwhelming force of nature, which was fitting given it was from Maya's perspective.
RedFury
RedFury - 1/17/2024, 6:14 PM
@EskimoJ - yeah it was really cool to get to see a hero from the other side of the aisle for a change. Puts the whole 'Devil of Hell's Kitchen' thing into perspective.
StSteven

@Vigor @RedFury @EskimoJ - Also, and I think that maybe some folks didn't pick up on this because it was so quick, but DD showing up DID have a purpose in the plot as after that warehouse fight with him when Maya is with Fisk and he says to her something to the effect of how pleased he is with her performance there and that none of his men have been able to stand up to "him" much less handle "him" as well as she did, which is what prompts him to advance her to the next level (from training to application or whatever he says).

So it seems like Fisk views Maya going up against DD as the final test (or even like a boss fight at the end of a level in a game), AND even though there's no evidence one way or the other, it wouldn't surprise me if Fisk himself tipped off DD so that he was sure to be there. It's a minor point so I don't expect it to be picked up on again, but a cool line in "DD:BA" to tie that up would be DD saying something to Fisk the next time he encounters him like "The last time I heard from you was you so-called "anonymous" tip on that warehouse. Really, Fisk? Setting up your own daughter? That's low, even for you.".

Aaaaaand then again maybe I'm just reading too much into all this and they just wanted a scene of DD vs. Maya. Who knows.
Vigor
Vigor - 1/17/2024, 11:31 PM
@StSteven - clearly you're someone who watches the show as intently as I do. No I don't think you were reading too into it. I had a similar interpretation. If he knew daredevil would possibly be there, why would he send someone he considers his daughter to that fight? Would he send his wife Vanessa (was that her name? It's been a while) to a master con artist to test her wit?

I caught onto that too.
StSteven
StSteven - 1/18/2024, 2:59 PM
@Vigor - Yeah, I believe that DD said something to Maya about how he's been watching the warehouse guys for weeks or something so it COULD all just be coincidence and Fisk didn't know about DD being there until afterward, buuuuut, I doubt it. Again, it will probably never be addressed, but Fisk is the type that doesn't leave things up to chance and is a master manipulator if nothing else, and I think that we're going to see a lot more of that come out in "DD:BA", starting with his bid to run for mayor.

And in fact (and I'm totally just guessing here), what we may see as a difference between Netflix DD Fisk and MCU Fisk is a kind of tonal shift in his character from being less physically brutal and more manipulative as a result of Maya "healing" some of his inner rage going back to his father. This would explain why after seeing that news bit about NYC needing a strong guy as mayor it occurred to him that he can get the power he wants, even more, by winning a high office and using his power to manipulate people, as opposed to just beheading folks with a car door. Sure, I'm sure that he'll still get physical when he has to, but now that his cloud of rage has at least somewhat lifted, he'll likely see that there are better ways to get what he wants.

And if that IS how this plays out, then Maya may have inadvertently given him what he needed in order to get that power. Food for thought anyway.

Anything is better than that goofy ass finale. Looks like another classic Marvel example of taking out the popular male character from the show because they don’t want him to upstage the female lead even though his presence would make 10000x more sense (see also: WandaVision)

Way better and makes much sore sense than what we got, so of course they cut it...

From having Daredevil doing the walk of shame in that shemale hulk show to that poorly choreographed fight we got with echo and Daredevil knocking over that shelf and then disappearing like a chicken sh1t was so true to the character that we got in the Netflix show. I think it is safe to say that DD is in safe hands right now with disney.

Maya siding with Kingpin and faking his death would have been pretty cool.

Having her be more of an antagonist to DD, rather than an ally of sorts would be interesting, considering the communication barriers between the two.

@SheepishOne - It wasn’t Kingpins death she was going to fake, it was her actual Uncles, to trick Kingpin into believing she was on his side

My wife actually likes echo and that's the only reason I have seen the first 2 episodes. Marvel should never have made this, so many better mainstream characters and stories. With that said, what I saw was barely subpar. Even the daredevil clip, didn't feel like the Netflix daredevil. The fight scenes look fake, echo riding the bike also feels fake and they also completely changed her powers. Why, why and o why? They had a chance here to develop aq charter and story like the Netflix daredevil/punisher and completely blew it. I don't see anything great in this show, even Kingpin is losing his wow factor, cause he shows up so much. The show feels rushed, story weak, only saving grace is the actress, i think she did a good job and have her represent a brown Latina is pretty cool. But it's a comic book character, stay in canon and listen to the fans and Marvel did neither. Anotehr let down.

But how was he gonna communicate with her? Over FaceTime and he learned ASL from when we last saw him?

While that would have been cool to have Maya undercover trying to take out Kingpin, I think how it went was perfect, a much more in depth look at the character. The show really felt like TV show for a change, and Episode 4 was easily my favourite, and it's clear that Episode 5 was very much rewritten so that the final wasn't just one big long fight scene which was refreshing for a change, nice to see that violence doesn't solve everything in the Marvel Universe for once personally.

OT: So I saw the Mean Girls musical movie this Sunday and bro... I don't care what any of the incels and film bros say, IT WAS SO F**KING GOOD YALL!!! The cast was superb, the cinematography had no right to go as hard as it did, and you can really tell Tina Fey evolved as a comedic and (especially) as a dramatic writer.

Also if the MCU isn't dead in the water by the time they actually decide to introduce the X-Men, I have some casting suggestions...

Christopher Briney as Scott Summers

Bebe Wood as Jean Grey

Kiana Madeira as Ororo Munroe

Jack Wolfe as Kurt Wagner

Derek Luh as Warren Wò Xīn Dùn lll

Auli'i Cravalho as Anna-Marie D'Ancanto

Milo Manheim as Remy LeBeau

The cameo was fine enough, no need for overexposure before DD has his own show coming out IMO. With that being said, this definitely felt like it could have used at least another episode.
