Melissa Rosenberg Expects AKA JESSICA JONES To Be Shopped Around To Other Networks

Even though ABC passed on AKA Jessica Jones, Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg believes that might not have be final nail in the coffin for the show about a private detective agency that caters to other superheroes. Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

In May, we learned that ABC had declined to move forward with AKA Jessica Jones. A show that was based on Brian Michael Bendis' extraordinary Alias comic. It was being adapted by Twilight and Birds Of Prey screenwriter, Melissa Rosenberg, who described her series as, "It's dark material. It's not 'Captain America.’ I mean, it is some pretty gritty, adult-themed stuff. So we'll have to see how that fits [on network television]. She's a former superhero with post-traumatic stress disorder trying to make it as a detective in New York. But she keeps on getting pulled back in, because she has some minor superpowers. She's got like B-level superpowers – she's so awesome! But she keeps on getting pulled back in, so she's straddling the two worlds.”

Collider's recently asked Melissa Rosenberg about the show while she was doing press for her latest film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

Did you originally sign on with ABC to do AKA Jessica Jones?

ROSENBERG: Yeah, I did the Jessica Jones pilot, but they didn’t pick it up to pilot. The studio still owns it, and I think we’re going to go shop it around to some other outlets to see. So, that’s on hold. But, they just came back to me the next season and said, “Well, we have this Dutch series.” Red Widow is based on a Dutch series, called Penoza. I watched the series and went, “This is not a network show. You can’t do this on network.” But, Paul Lee was like, “No, I want to do it on the network.” And I thought, “Okay, but are we going to be dialing back the edge and the violence?,” but no, we’re really not. Aside from swearing and maybe too much blood, and a little writhing and sex scenes, the storytelling has been incredibly edgy. So, we’ll see if the audience jumps on board.

That series, with Daredevil and a few others popping in and out could be pretty cool. If there is a Daredevil series one day, you can have crossovers.

Daredevil would indeed be awesome. Law and Order with Ninjas and some villains thrown in the mix.

It's unfortunate that ABC passed on it. While I'm glad it may go to another network, not being on a Disney owned network lessens the possibility of the show synching up with any shows Marvel develops for ABC.

Seriously there are so many more characters I'd rather watch. There's not enough CB TV Shows right now, lets not waste our time with this property.

I really hope they release the pilot, even if no network greenlights the series after this. Well, ~especially~ if no network greenlights the series - even as an iTunes download for a few bucks it'd be interesting to see!

I bet the CW takes a look.

I should make a comic book tv series following CW's methodology: I'll make it about the Silver Surfer. You know; about a beach bum who wears silver board shorts and is friends with his college professor (whom everyone calls "Galactus" because of his preoccupation with astronomy and invention. It's Prof. "Galactus" who gives him his "crime-fighting surfboard" with which he, you know, fights crime. It's genius!! No powers, and it will be GRITTY (the two hallmarks of a CW series). Ahhhh, dry-[frick]ing the source material. Now THAT'S a CW staple.

@sosthetruth, instead of thinking of her as the person who adapted the Twilight novels, why not think of her as the person who was a writer and producer on Dexter for it's first 4 seasons?

During it's first seasons, Dexter was one of the most acclaimed and talked about shows on TV. But, for some reason, people tend to disregard that as if her work on Twilight negates those 4 years of working on Dexter.

She didn't come up with Twilight from scratch. She was adapting a story that was already written. And she was given strict notes and guidelines she had to follow. So, it doesn't really matter how great a writer you are, if you're given something that's already dreck (in my opinion it's dreck), there's not a helluva lot you can do with it. Especially when you must adhere closely to the novels and can't really change that much.

I've only seen one Twilight movie, but I've seen every season of Dexter. My favorite season was season 4, in which she was executive producer and head writer, so my experience with her work is almost completely pleasant. I give her props.

Cool. Glad this show is still on the table... it'd probably have a better chance of survival/popularity on another network anyway (as long as it's not FOX).

And yeah, seriously do not give Rosenberg any shit for Twilight. No one could possibly make a faithful adaptation of that piece of utter shit and it actually be good. NO ONE.
