Hugh Jackman Confirms That THE WOLVERINE Will Be A "Standalone" Movie

"We've deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture," Hugh Jackman told Total Film in a recent interview (via The Geek Files). "With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it's going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic." This will come as good news to fans who are STILL seething over the portrayal of characters like Deadpool and Emma Frost in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Jackman went on to also assure fans that the same problem won't plague The Wolverine. "The approach to character means we won't be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it'll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film."

As for how the idea for the Japan set storyline came about, Jackman says, "[We] went to Christopher McQuarrie, who was involved in X-Men and The Usual Suspects. He's a brilliant writer and he came up with a concept that was just phenomenal. I rang Jeffrey [Katzenberg (Dreamworks Animation CEO)] and he went 'Great, now you have a good idea, just go for it.' I'm just really glad it's happening. For a while it's felt like a rocky ride. I think it's the best idea we've had, the strongest script we've had and that now we really have an opportunity to make something really great." He jokingly added, "I've been waiting for it so long now. I think half the material in my one-man show is about the wait for The Wolverine!"

Though it's still fox I'm somewhat optimistic. One of my favorite characters and based off one of my favorite stories of call time.

It also means that it probably doesn't follow the same continuity path as the other films. Probably being more f'ed up like Fox always does.

Is it just me or is the ad space on the sides, top, and bottom, of this site getting larger and the CBM info space is shrinking?

Every X-Men movie has been a stand alone Wolverine picture. Why would this be any different?

Need to stratch all the X-Men movies and start again. Give it to Disney, at least they might make something decent out of it.

I'm actually looking forward to this one. There's no way it could be worse then the first. Stand alone and Japan saga seem like a win to me. I'm not sure about rewrites, but if Arnofsky was attached at one point I would think they're on to something with this story.

Its not gonna be great if the makers are not passionated about it. And only thing Fox is passionated is making money... so... lets hope at least watchable film.

"You can't have "too many" mutants in a mutant movie. That always sounded dumb when ppl kept saying it. Its like saying you have too many people in a movie about people."

It may sound dumb, but Wolverine isn't a movie about mutants, just a movie that features one. And the first solo outing by Wolvie proved that getting a shit-ton of mutants in a movie do nothing to make it better or interesting, and make for a shitty mess when not handled properly. Putting in a name just to get it in the movie, and ignoring the previous films and comicbook histories to do it, and serve no other purpose except to get the name out there, bring the movie down to the mess that was Origins and, IMO, First Class. To many charactors are an issue when dealing with the X-Men, but it shouldn't have been an issue Origins had to deal with, yet it was. I hope he ain't blowing hot air, and he and Samurai are the only two super powered folk in the movie.

Hugh Jackman is a great guy with a truck load of passion for the character. But that clearly wasn't enough to stop FOX butchering Origins. However, even as I completely wrote off any FOX related CBM after Origins they have clawed (pun intended) their way back a little with First Class.

So will this movie be any good?

Hugh Jackman loves this character SOOOO much, and this will probably be his last portrayal...He always gives credit to the character for his current level of fame, and despite how terrible the last one was, I truly believe he has always tried to respect the source material....based purely on that, I really hope he goes out with a bang with this one....he deserves it....
