Mark Millar Reveals Why Matthew Vaughn Chose THE SECRET SERVICE Over X-MEN: DOFP

In a new interview, Fox Creative Consultant and comic book writer Mark Millar has revealed why exactly Matthew Vaughn decided to drop out of X-Men: Days of Future Past in order to helm the big screen adaptation of The Secret Service. Check it out!

When it was revealed that Matthew Vaughn had decided to step down as X-Men: Days of Future Past director in order to focus on the big screen adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' The Secret Service, many fans were left scratching their heads. Why turn down one of the most highly anticipated sequels to one of the most critically acclaimed comic book movies of 2011 to focus on a film he could have easily begun work on soon after? Well, talking to Comic Book Resources, Mark Millar revealed that there was a very good reason for this decision. His comments also put shed some doubt on those recent rumours that Vaughn is the frontrunner to helm 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII for Disney.

"We thought Matthew was going to do X-Men first, but we found out there were actually a few imitators of 'Secret Service' in the works. People think you're lying when you say you're not trying to get your comics made into movies so quickly, but the two reasons it happens like that is first because it's the best ad for the comic you'll ever have. And for me, selling the book is the most important thing. The second reason is because people are always trying to rip you off. Somebody will start to work on a spec screenplay about your idea. There are three other projects I know of now about a James Bond kind of guy taking a street kid and turning him into a spy. Three screenplays were already going through Hollywood about this! So Matthew and I said, '[frick] this. We're not letting anyone steal our ideas.'"

Those copycat bastards.

X-Men: Days of Future Past would already be in safe hands if he was still going to direct. The guy can't make any bad movie.

Mark Miller, why don't you "suggest" to Josh Trank to work on any of your other books instead of working on F4?lol

Dunno how good the comic is, but I'm willing to bet Vaughn will make a fantastic movie out of it. Did the same for Kick-Ass.

So Vaughn steps down as x-men director, one of the top 5 biggest comic book film franchises to go do some mark millar comic adaptation that probably won't even make 50 million just a few weeks after millar is employed by fox to consult on their comic book movies. Well this doesn't scream mark millar abusing his position at fox

I'm pretty sure that Matthew Vaughn also helped come up with the Secret Service comic, so he also has a personal stake in it.

That's [frick]ing shitty. I mean, it doesn't surprise me, all the copycat business, but man it's [frick]ed up.

On the other hand, most of those blatant rip-off films are usually looooow budget, SyFy channel-style crap piles.

i.e.- Transmorphers, Paranormal Entity, Titanic 2, etc.

The real reason? Vaughn does not do sequels.I notice that nobody's asking why he's not doing Kick Ass 2, right now.
He's rich and he's married to a model. Nothing against any of that. Who wouldn't want to be rich and married to Claudia Schiffer? But he probably never played with his toys for more than a week as a boy. Buy something new, forget all about the old. Seems to be his style.

Millar should convince Trank to direct something else instead of the FF reboot !

that'd be AWSOME !!!!!!

are you kidding me? we lost vaughn and got saddled with singer, just so millar could make his shitty unoriginal film?
news flash: other people are doing it not because they're ripping you off. but because it's a generic idea, that everyone has.

seriously, [frick] this guy. who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to hire this dipshit as fox's kevin feige? kevin feige makes competent decisions that are best for their superhero franchises. not this shit.

@farkosaurus

ive been thinking the exact same thing. from everything ive heard about the secret service - none of it sounds extrordinarily unique. i could see if it was an original and groundbreaking idea, but its seems to be a tale that we've definately seen before. very similar to wanted in fact, right?

Vaughn is such a crappy director. All you people that think he is a genius are out of your minds...

here' s my take on the worst comic book movie ever...X-MEN FIRST CLASS!

Here is a film that is suppose to tell the origin of the whole x-men IDEOLOGY, the struggle between magneto and Xavier, the struggle between violence versus non violence, and they completely fail at conveying any true depth in the emotional aspects of the storytelling. The movie completely sleep walks through the emotional aspects with no exploration of the psychological dynamics behind those emotions. A perfect example is when Mystique crosses over to Magneto's side. This was such a pathetic scene, done just for the sake of betrayal, but what was the emotional motivation behind that betrayal? Because Magneto puckered lips with her? Because he told her she looked better blue? That's why she betrays Xavier? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!! Mystique is suppose to be a mentally unstable shape shifter with an identity crisis, like in the comic! What is this Xavier's sister crap? She's just an insecure weakling who wants to fit in! Whoever thought it was a good idea to make Mystique Xavier's sister should be shot.

Moving on, this film totally misses the ball when it comes to Xavier. Who is this guy? He's just some Richie Rich womanizer who lives it up and for no reason is non violent. There's no reason at all!!! I can't believe they didn't explore the psychological dynamics for why Xavier has chosen a life of non-violence! That's where the story is suppose to be! They left out his whole story! The struggles with his brother, Cain Marko. Cain abused Xavier and there are a lot of psychological constructs that are formed in Xavier due to these events with Cain. Also Xavier's experience as a medic in the Korean War(?) and the whole ordeal with Moira; all this was cut out for nonsense or just to focus on Magneto. This story is almost as bad as X3. How can you not focus on Xavier!! And you "X-men fans" like this film?!

Then there's the stupidest scene in the history of comic book films; the scene when the team first sees Hank as Beast and Mystique says "This is who you were meant to be." It's enough to make me barf. i like to rewind and put that scene on repeat just so I can laugh hilariously!! You people really think that line in screenplay is logical? This guy experimented on himself!!!! How in God's name is that suppose to be "who he's meant to be" if it was attained unnaturally?! What a joke!
That line right there, completely reveals the ignorance of the writers and film makers on their understanding of the X-men ideology.

Don't even get me started on the feet! Why it was so hard to get this guy a body cast to make him look big? We'll never know!

And what the hell is with Havoc's hoola hoops? This guy is suppose to raise hell when he bursts, not this corny crap!

This movie is so stupid. One moment you got Xavier talking about how mutation is an evolutionary process, referring to the Neanderthal and genetics, then the next moment you got the dumb ass villain talking about how radiation gave birth to mutants. What?! It's like an 8th grader wrote this film.

The villain's plot is ridiculous. He want's to start nuclear war because the radiation will cause mutation. He even goes as far as literally saying, "radiation gave birth to mutants." This is complete crap. If you read the comics or have seen any of Bryan Singer's films, you will know that mutation was all about EVOLUTION!!!! This is X-Men, not the Incredible Hulk! Can mutation be a result of radiation? Yes. But the type of mutation that creates the mutants in X-Men is due to evolution; a slow process. Just listen to Xavier's opening statement in X1. And Bryan Singer supposedly wrote this? Moron can't even remember the continuity/content of his own films! I lost all respect for him now and it's evident "the Usual Suspects" and X1 was just luck. X2 was good but what he did to Rogue's character was not right and was just a hint of his stupidity ...don't eve get me started on Superman Returns.

Another horrible thing about this film is the directing. i miss Singer's direction. It was very sophisticated and i feel like he took the material seriously. here, it goes back and forth from being serious to being wacky and lame..lamer than spiderman 3 dancing on the bar lame. The lamest thing was when Angel shows magneto and X her wings. It's suppose to be a secret... BUT SHE SHOWS THEM IN A ROOM FULL OF WINDOWS WITH A WHOLE STRIP CLUB IN THE BACK!!! No thought went into this at all!! This loses all credibility for the realism. Get with the program Vaugn!!!

Here are two more continuity/illogical errors: Xavier says before the team puts on the yellow suits that they were bulletproof, then what happens? HE GETS SHOT IN THE BACK!!!! Then at the end of the movie the CIA, i repeat again, THE CIA can't find xavier simply because he mind wiped Moira. THIS IS SO STUPID!! XAVIER IS A FILTHY RICH FAT CAT WHO OPENLY USED HIS NAME WHEN HE WAS WITH THE CIA..HIS FAMILY IS RICH, I'M PRETTY SURE PEOPLE IN THEIR COMMUNITY KNOW WHO THE XAVIER'S ARE, YET THE CIA CAN'T FIND THEM!!!These guys can kill kennedy but can't find a rich bastard named charles xavier!! ha ha ha!! this movie is so pathetic it's hilarious and what's even funnier is how people close their eyes to these errors.

Another problem is when Emma Frost uses her diamond form to cut a whole in the screening room for the CIA and tells them some idiotic crap about war. Look, IF SHE CAN CONTROL PEOPLE'S MINDS, WHY IN THE HELL DIDN'T SHE DO IT, RIGHT THERE?!!! It makes no sense!! This film is far from brilliant.

Then there's the continuity errors, which are a disgrace to storytelling. People who say that this film is only in continuity with Singer's films are full of crap. Xavier says in X1, "When I was 17, I met a man named Erick Leinsherr." Wrong! Then the whole story from X-men 1 about Magneto helping Xavier to build cerebro is crap because in fact it was Hank who built it with the CIA!!! Another continuity error! And the whole dialogue from X-men 1 about how Magneto's helmet is able to block X's telepathy because Magneto helped him built it is another continuity error because Magneto got the helmet from Shaw!! Then you got people saying this is a reboot. Oh, Really? Is that why Hugh Jackman was in the thing? Is that why the original first class weren't in it? Is that why they decided to copy the opening scene from the original film? If this is a reboot, then the producers, along with Singer are degenerate morons who should be lynched because they excluded the classic first class just to put in "mutants we haven't seen," which is completely stupid because it disrespects the source material. At least if this was a prequel it gives them an excuse not to put the original first class in it because of their twisted chronology.

People only like this film because of the violence and because of Magneto. Granted. Magneto was great but so what. The movie is called X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, not Magneto. This is an epic failure in storytelling, so epic you could teach a college course on it.

Enough is enough. The X-Men film franchise is officially dead to me. Thank God!

Really? Someone is going to steal your generic ass idea, so that's why Vaughn left? [frick] off.

Also, as some others have said, can he convince Trank to work on one of his things instead of FF?

@fullmetal: Tell us how you really feel...but you aren't really wrong on any of that

@DoctorJamesWF: Um, no you can blame directing for it too. It's the directors responsibility to bring the movie to life. He obviously did not care enough to tell them that he didn't like the script, or he was ok with it. Also, his directing wasn't anything special or groundbreaking either and it did nothing to make the script any good.

Hell, Iron Man barely had a script and look what Favreau did with that! Good direction can make up for a bad script, and Vaughn didn't. I don't however think he is a shitty director, but I don't think his direction was impressive in any way on First Class

well said,i think x-men first class had its moments that i liked.the opening scene with young erik & the siege of the c.i.a building but thats about it.

they need to reboot it or give it back to marvel & let them show you how to make an x-men film because they did a very good job on that other superhero team book something called the avengers.
