X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel Screenwriter Discusses the Film

The screenwriter for the X-Men: First Class sequel, Simon Kinberg, shares his thoughts on Magneto and Xavier.

MTV had the opportunity to speak with screenwriter Simon Kinberg at the premiere of his film This Means War. Kinberg had plenty to say about writing with so many characters in mind, as well as producing the movie. He also had quite a bit to say about Michael Fassbender and Magneto.

From MTV...

"I don’t know what the title is going to be but certainly I’m working on the sequel to 'X-Men: First Class' right now. I’m going to be writing and producing it, I’m starting now, with Matthew Vaughn directing."

"I’m a huge X-Men fan. I grew up loving the comic books and it was really exciting to be able to do the origin story of Xavier and Magneto, and getting those two actors, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender, were really amazing. So being able to explore those characters with actors of that quality will be exciting a second time around, and doing some things unexpected with those characters, which is the plan."

"That’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy."

"We’re still figuring that out. I think the truth is ultimately that because Michael is such an interesting actor, he’ll never be full-on anything. He’ll have a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side you’ll be able to relate but you’ll also be afraid of him. He becomes Magneto, he says 'Call me Magneto' at the end of the first movie."

First Class was cool and all, but a New Mutants movie that takes place after Prof X death, legion as the villain and a Cable cameo is what I want.

Kill Magneto and bring on Mr. Sinister.

@ Badbear:

I completely agree. "First Class" was the epitome of average. Anyone who wasn't Fassbender's Magneto or McAvoy's Xavier was basically a letdown.

Can't wait 'til Marvel gets the rights back and does it proper. I mean, just look what they're doing with the Avengers.

Not to mention this is the same guy who wrote X-3. How can you "fans" get excited for this?

@Scorpion8125 don't you think that making Apokolypse as a main villain would be most troublesome for non believers to understand the movie? i mean they still want to reach out for all audiences. I do agree about the Cable part tho!

btw @Hawksblueyes, nice work on en scripting the interview, it is so accurate. nice work!

I rather like the xmen franchise except of course x 3 and orgins. THose were crimes against HUMANITY!!!!!!! but i think first class was done right. A sequel would be cool but itd also be cool to have a villain other than magneto. Hes the villian in every FRICKIN xmen movie. thas my 2 cents worth.

@badbear and RaleighAntrobus

I’m with you guys; I don’t understand the praise for Fist class. I personally thought that it was a dreadful movie. It almost feels like there are shills for Fox Studios coming on this site pumping up the movie to get the fan boys all jazzed on it.
First Class only took in $145Mil domestically, and I would imagine any sequel to FC or wolverine sequel will be about a 20% drop from FCs’ 145 mil. I’ll only go see it when it’s at the dollar theater…or not at all.

Made it 14 comments in before someone mentioning making a movie with the original five. New record i believe. Hate it or love it, First Class was a good film and a good cbm. deviations from the source material is alright as long as the story's good. Stop bitching about bring the original five when they obviously have a established a continuity that they're gonna roll with. Why would they not? because of illogical bitching from idiots on comicbookmovie.com? No

@Pony:

I understand the instinct to immediately discredit any positive reviews of Fox's X-Men work, but I thought that First Class actually did a good job within the framework that the studio has established.

The tone fit the period extremely well, the ensemble performed admirably, and Fassbender was (no pun intended, seriously) magnetic as Erik.

The best parts of the script were the ones that were obviously lifted from the aborted Magneto film, but even so, they were well blended with the final product.

I'm the first to hate on Fox, but have to give credit where credit is due.

I thought they wasted a wonderful opprortunity when they killed of Oliver Platt's FBI character. He could have been Mr Sinister in disquise doing mutant research with the US Gov't undercover.

Actually he still could. His "death" would be a great cover to move on to other mutants.

I just want the death of Beast or a recast or a rewrite of the character. Never before have I so wanted a mutant I actually like to DIE in a film just because of how badly he was. I may be alone but Beast in FC was dreadful and came off like a huge dick. Then he ended up looking like a fuzzy blue kitten. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I want the Brett Ratner version of Beast1

How can a film you hate be considered good? First Class averge at best.

guys who still think its a prequel, get it through your heads. the director said "forget the old ones". ITS A REBOOT WITH SOME OF THE SAME ACTORS. GIVE IT A REST WITH THE CONTINUITY PROBLEMS BECASUE THERE ARE NONE.

First Class really stunk up the place. Daredevil bad? Hmm, yeah. Elektra bad? Hmmmm, oh yeah.

Why does this guy even mention what Magneto says at the end of X-Men 1? Like he gives a fvck? Continuity problems were gargantuan in FC.

GIVE X-MEN BACK TO MARVEL!

First Class was a great movie...Right on par or better than X2, which is the best X-movie yet.

As for the villian, I think Mr. Sinister should be involved with Erik and Prof. X at odds with how to deal with a "new threat".

They could also go the way of the govt., now knowing that mutants exist, hunting and capturing mutants. While Prof. X and magneto are also searching out mutants to bring to their own causes, ie The Brothehood Vs. Charles' X-men...

Just my take...

@ TheCapelessCrusader
What you wrote is very fair and I hear you, but I respectfully disagree. You have to know that the positive reviews are bought and paid for by the big studios…it’s simply part of their marketing budget. With Marvel Studios being in its infancy they are probably not aware to make that a part of their budget yet or simply don’t want to play that game…I have a feeling that they will eventually have to in order to compete over the years.

Plus, do you think that the general movie-going-audience is growing of tired of these XM movies? 5 in 10 years is a lot…I have a feeling they might have run their course….Just a thought. Later.

@hartley07, keep dreamin' buddy. Reboot? It must have been a re-everything. First Class looked nothing like the X-Men.

Mystique as Xavier's sister? Are you f'kin kidding me?

Why not just have Kitty Pride as a blind chick who can only see in the future....
(hold on...what, there's a character named Destiny who does that? screw it, its a reboot, right?)
....I'm back, who is also, hm let's see, oh yeah, this is golden....Nightcrawler's future wife!!! Yeah!!

it needs cyclops, marvel girl, angel, iceman & beast.just imagine the avengers movie without captain america, iron man & thor.

it wouldn't be an avengers movie as these are not x-men movies.

the x-men trilogy are more x-men than first class ever was.

first class was alright but considering fox is behind it don't get your hopes up because you know they will have to put their spin in on the movie and that could equal disaster

Thanks AUTOBOT.

I have to admit, I loved First Class even though I don't think it was a very good X-Men film by any means. Once I forgot about everything I knew concerning the X-Men, I found that it was a fantastic movie.
