Fox Set Release Date For Mathew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class

That was quick! No sooner is Mathew Vaughn back in the directors chair after some back and forth than a release date has been set for the X-Men prequel...

Fox have fast tracked the production for a June 3rd 2011 release date. Here is the official press release from Fox..

BRYAN SINGER AND MATTHEW VAUGHN UNITE FOR X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
Twentieth Century Fox will release film on June 3, 2011
LOS ANGELES (May 4, 2010) __ “Kick-Ass” director Matthew Vaughn will helm X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, a new chapter in Twentieth Century Fox’s blockbuster series of films based on the Marvel Comics.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS begins production this summer for a June 3, 2011 release. Bryan Singer, who conceived the story for FIRST CLASS and directed the original “X-Men” and its sequel “X2,” is producing along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
“I’ve been a fan of Matthew’s since LAYER CAKE,” said Singer. “He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film.”
Added Twentieth Century Fox president of production, Emma Watts: “X-Men: First Class presents an exciting opportunity to further explore the history and relationships of these beloved characters. Matthew’s combination of talent, verve and vision is perfectly suited to the task.”

There is also a rough plot synopsis..although it really doesn't reveal anything we haven't already heard or guessed..

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

I have to say, after the apparent rumor was quashed about Vaughn helming and more surfaced name checking Louis Letterier among others I really didn't think he would be taking the gig. My excitement for this movie has officially moved up a notch..making it..one notch! Ah no, who knows what a director like Vaughan will bring to this. Lets hope its more toned down Kick-Ass than Mutant High 90210 anyway.

Many thanks to Alex over at Firstshowing for bringing it to my attention.

It seems next year and 2012 will be full of superhero movies. And though I'm happy that DC will return, I'm proud to say that I'm glad we'll be getting three Marvel movies in one year.

Nice Find @ROR

ha ha, but I know nothing about First Class.

It will be interesting to see what he brings to the table and if he butts heads with the studio.

Huge news! Does this mean that Apocalypse is going to antagonize? They did mention "the greatest threat the world has ever known." I'd rather see Apocalypse and Sinister in X-4 but oh well.

Well, if Vaughn does direct then I suppose I feel a little more hopeful about this movie but the fact that Fox are making this makes me dread First Class regardless of his involvement!

After all, they havent made a single good CBM to date so why should this one change that trend? ;(

Fox made X-1 and 2 plus many other good action films. The last two mutant movies sucked but I'm sure the studio is aware of that and are going to actually try this time. The release date isn't a good start but I'm optimistic.

@Josh...Yeeeeeeeah but thats just, like, your opinion man! No doubt a lot of people will be loathe to watch or like anything Fox puts out but I personally enjoyed the first 2 X Men, Daredevil and even Hulk. The only reason I'm not exited for this is because I just don't think its a story worth telling..but who knows.

John..well, they have some cast members if they use teeny Cyc, Frost and the others from the end of Wolverine! I can hear Lee screaming from here...

X-Men 1 and 2 were good movies(check RottenTomatoes) and Daredevil wasnt THAT bad.

Honestly, Vaughn is one of my favorite directors so I'm excited again about this movie. That said, I hope Fox won't screw him over like they usually do because this really has potential.

ROR: Ha, fair point mate! :) To be fair, I enjoyed Daredevil as well and I can accept that the majority of critics and fans liked the first two X-Men movies but as for the rest? Fantastic Four, Elektra, X-Men Origins: Wolverine...for the most part their movies have been hated by the fans and recieved average to poor reviews! Sure, some of their movies have redeeming features but for the most part it's a real crap factory over at Fox IMO!

I'm sort of interested in this movie (even though I'd rather an X-Men 4 that would somehow work to repair the franchise after Ratner!) but knowing that it will be a cameo filled, continuity destroying mess like their last effort makes me dread it..! :P

Those others you mentioned Josh, were indeed muck. But I think people tend to forget that Fox is just a studio, they have a certain amount of sway of course but FF sucked because the script and the director sucked. Those movies were fairly faithful to the comics really..aside from Doom so its not even that they like to [frick] with the source material. Vaughn is directing this film, and Fox are backing it.. thats what I'm gonna keep telling myself until I have reason to think different..probably the first clip!

@Jay: I agree, man. I mean, I really wanna see this, but it seems like it's going too fast. 13 months, a week, and a day from today? No way!

Didn't think Vaughn would go through with this. That's good, but I still have my doubts about Fox. I liked the first 2 X-films as well, and I didn't hate DD, but the rest are pretty damn bad. I admire Hulk '03 for its attempt at depth and quality, but wasn't a big fan of the actual result. I just hope to God that they have a good script.

Hopefully Vaughn doesn't back out like he did X3, or else we could get another Ratturd :(

"ORIGINAL X-MEN A MUST!!!" Oh God, here he comes :)

ROR: Having Vaughn directing this movie might just be the only thing that saves it! I just hope that he puts his foot down when it comes to the script and doesnt let Fox make the same mistakes that they have with characters in the past! (cloud Galactus, Barakapool and Cyclops...let's not forget poor misunderstood Cyclops, lol!) If they get the characters right along with a decent enough story then we might just end up with a half decent movie!

Oh, who am I kidding? I'll be convinced that the movie will be shit right up until the point I see the damned thing! Bloody Fox... ;)

I'm shocked he actually signed on but thrilled! But knowing the past there may be a chance he'll drop out if FOX is too controlling. I just hope it's a reboot instead of a prequel. I wanna see the ORIGINAL 5 X-Men!

we should also expect a FF4 and a Daredevil reboot to release in 2011-2012.

As much as I love Kick-Ass, I'm still not confident about First Class. Does Fox bother consulting Marvel? Fox has no qualms about chopping up a movie into their own watered down version and they might just be using Vaughn as a stunt. Gavin Hood was suppose to be great after doing some successful films, but I hated what happened with X-O: Wolvie as a long time Wolverine fan. The rush deadline is another bad sign that's typical Fox.

Damn that was fast, I didnt even know that Matthew was definetly in the directors chair, nevermind the release date being next year! But isnt it a little rushed?

This entire project is like a math equation, where no matter how many numbers you add and multiple together the second you multiply by 0 it all means nothing. Fox and Lauren Schuler Donner are the 0's in the equation.

In the X-Men movies, none of the X-Men super-powers are done with special effects. Chuck Norris is the stuntman for every character
