Here's How The ANT-MAN Screenwriting Credits Sort Out

Recently, Avengers: Age of Ultron writer/director Joss Whedon called Edgar Wright's Ant-Man script the best Marvel script he's ever read.  Too bad that's not the version fans will see in theaters on July 17, 2015.

Originally, Wright and Joe Cornish wrote the MCU introduction for Henry Pym (Michael Douglass) and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) before the Wright and Marvel Studios parted ways over creative differences.  Wright and Cornish first started working on Ant-Man in 2003.

Adam McKay was brought in by Marvel to replace Wright as writer AND director but was unable to commit to directing due to scheduling conflicts.  Marvel then came up with the solution of using McKay's script with Peyton Reed sitting in the director's chair.  Throughout the revision process, lead actor Paul Rudd was also brought in to address script changes.

So here's how official writing credits shake down:
Ant-Man story by Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish
Ant-Man screenplay by Wright & Cornish and  Adam McKay & Paul Rudd

I can't comment on how much of the Wright screenplay made it to film but it seems pretty fair that his contribution is being acknowledged and that his name is first for the writing credit.

Hollywood doesn't use Last Names with commas in credits. The "and" and "&" are also different and hold specific significance. You have summarized the information in that article incorrectly.

A part of me is going to be sad when I see this. I agree with Whedon and would have loved to see the Edgar Wright version of this movie.

Isn't this old news?

I'm sure Wright's version would have been good. He makes fun films, for the most part.

But I'm happy this will be more integrated into the MCU. I just hope it doesn't have too much Rudd humor. I don't want Role Models Marvel Edition.

@BackwardGalaxy--You're absolutely right. I believe the official listing has an ampersand between Wright and Cornish's names which are followed by a comma, and then McKay and Rudd's names joined by an ampersand, to indicate two separate writing teams.

I'm not really worried about the story or dialogue. What irks me is that apart from the shrinking scenes, the cinematography and scene setup for this film looks like it was made for TV.

I didn't expect him to be completely left out of the credits; even Zak Penn was credited in The Avengers.

Good, it's only fair that he gets credit for doing work.

If you read into how they sort out this stuff, it's quite sinister. So man writers get shut up of scripts they've heavily contribute too because of silly loopholes

So glad Wright's at least getting credit for his work, would've lost a tonne of respect for Marvel if they left his and Cornish's names off the story and screenplay credits after he spent a decade working on it.

Still, would be nice to know how much of the final product was based on his script, and how much came from the revision. And it'll be very interesting to see if he actually watches the movie and what he thinks of it. And I'm also kinda sad because I was so sure Simon Pegg and Nick Frost would cameo and officially be part of the MCU back when Wright was on board.

I gotta say, I'm curious what happened, I feel like there is more bad blood here then we hear about.

I sent Wright a tweet saying something like "Thanks for casting Gregg Turkington in Ant-Man" and he DM'd me back saying "I have some bad news for you..."
I then tweeted Peyton Reed asking why he took Gregg out, and Reed tweeted back that Gregg's still in the movie. Reed then made an appearance on Gregg's obscure web series, and apparently is a big fan of his (Gregg Turkington is hilarious)

I realize this doesn't mean much, but it seemed weird that Wright appeared bitter that Turkington was cut, when in fact, he wasn't. Speculate what you will from that, I guess.

I kind of feel bad for Edgar Wright. He obviously deserves credit for making Ant-Man seem plausible. He also had a vision for the movie long before the MCU was even a thing. It just kind of sucks that once the MCU happened, his vision didn't really fit into what else was going on. But I'm glad he's getting credit for the screenplay and story.

Did we ever get an articles of GIFs from the most recent Ant-Man trailer? I am in love with that scene of him strapping himself up and jumping down that conduit. So visually awesome.

@crabnado

No, Turkington was cast long before Wright's departure, Wright is also a big fan of Turkington's stuff.
