During the interview with Italian site Bad Taste, Chris Hemsworth has confirmed that Oscar - winner actress Natalie Portman will be back for The Avengers in 2012:

How many contracts signed? How many movies has committed?

Hemsworth: "Six. Three for three for Thor and the Avengers "

And where do we stand with the Avengers?

Hemsworth: "I'm going to get the final script, while I have read many drafts. We start shooting in May."

He read comic books to prepare?

Hemsworth: "Yes, I gave them to Joss Whedon, and the strangest thing is that they gave me before I came to know that he would be directing the film."

There will also be Natalie Portman?

Hemsworth: "Yes, Natalie will be there also."

So we can definitely say that Stellan Skarsgard will also be back just like the recent reports are saying.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, The Avengers is set to hit theatres on May 4, 2012.

Natalie Portman probably won't be returning for more Thor sequels, so it's nice to see that she'll have a part in The Avengers.

Portman is playing Jane Foster. It really fits for her to be in Avengers since Jane Foster is the one that keeps Thor interested in earth.

well her being in the Avengers makes more sense then Skarsgard character, more Portman is always a plus

Would be nice if we could get William Hurt back too.

Oh and she is bang tidy.

@Darkmatter

Where did you see that she signed on for three movies?

Jane Foster was only a predominant love interest of Donald Blake, not Thor, so I don't see why Marvel would use her again, especially if they want to keep the sequels set entirely in Asgard. I also imagine that they would want to explore the relationship between Thor and Sif, since they are the predominant couple in the Thor mythos.

@indoraptor12 - Go to 2:50

She does say also that she wont be in the avengers, but as DM said, the deal may have been done recently.

Man, Avengers starting to look pricey with all them actors. I know they already signed contracts but they look more expensive than the special effects itself.

This movie is literally a cast enduced project. I really think William Hurt and Liv Tyler should be in it for Hulks sake (minus Ed Norton saddly). Because it just seems like every member has at least a supporting cast member from their solo film coming in. Thor has Loki, Professor Andrews, and Jane Foster. Iron Man I thought was doing to have Rhodey. And, I bet someone else from TFA comes in as well, Red Skull? Bucky? Dum Dum?

I don't think that is true. I mean - he could be wrong, maybe he didn't understand the question.

But I will get really angry of Jane Foster is in the Avengers, but Pepper is not. I want PEPPER! She is the best and she has to be there!

@Xenix

Well, geez.... could you imagine the sequels NOT being set mainly in Asgard? You've got so many great stories that take place entirely in Asgard. (or in other realms.) Beta Ray Bill, Enchantress and Executioner, Surter, hell even the Olympian gods would make for a great story to tell. I can't possibly imagine why a Thor sequel would want to return to Earth for the majority of its duration. And once again, if there's any time to explore the relationship between Thor and Sif, it would be during the sequel. I love Natalie Portman, but Jane Foster isn't that important of a character in the Thor mythos, ESPECIALLY when you don't even have Donald Blake in the mix.

I'll take Darkmatter and Mason's word for it for now. But if she does return, I can't see her playing anything more than a 5 minute cameo.

Go Team Sif.

-surtur

In a logic world, the love interests of the avengers should be on the Avengers movie, because they still take part of their lives.

But I dont know if Marvel would paid Gwytney Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Liv Tayler to be on this movie in a more secondary role.

Of course, I would love it, but who knows what the script includes and what not....

She is pregnant right? She should be really showing by now. They may have to only film her face unless they are going to explian that Thor knocked her up.

Natalie Portman is hot and a HUGE NAME in Hollywood right now. Someone like her could bring different types of people to see this movie besides fans of cbms.

Its an Italian website. The questions are poorly worded and the answer to the second to last question reads as near non-sense. I'm calling this false until reported in US media.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is true, because since Marvel apparently is choosing to go the cosmic route with the storyline, having Jane Foster (an astrophysicist) in the movie would definitely make sense.

However, this could also be huge miscommunication and Hemsworth might not have meant that Portman be in the Avengers as well.
gambgel
gambgel - 4/16/2011, 10:38 AM
mm... yeah, I think it was a miscommunication.

If Natalie is pregnant, she cant shoot in the next months.

unless she shoot her scenes later in the year.

it would be cool if they had her as an assistant to selvig who would be part of a research team helping bruce banner (which would also include liv tyler as betsy ross) and they should also throw in william hurt trying to stop the hulk but he cant so the avengers have to step in and try it themselves. if they threw all these actors into small one or two scene cameos i would be satisfied.

none of the supporting cast of cap's should be in the avengers. first of all it wouldnt make sense, and secondly it would greater emphasize the loss and feeling of displacement cap feels when he wakes up and realizes all his friends and loved ones are gone

Awesome thought: Thor forced back to asgard at end THOR, in avrngers he finds out Jane went back to Blake (they have mentioned he was previous boyfriend in thor) so he isnt in a great mood and gets pissed off easily by hulk who runs into him. in his post avengers movies he is with sif. Btw Jane gets knocked up by blake while thor is gone. Run in with hulk is variable.

@People who are worried about the large cast of major stars...

I think its justifiable to be worried about The Avengers, whether it be concerns over "screen time with such a large cast" or "how the hell are they going to pay for it."

However, films like Oceans 11 and The Departed come to mind and put me at ease. Both are movies with large, star studded casts.

Whedon's a genious. I don't think he'll have trouble weaving in all the characters Marvel throws at him - primary or secondary.
