Samuel L. Jackson Looks Back On THE AVENGERS Success, A STAR WARS Saga Debate And More

Commenting on his next reprisals as Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson also looks back on The Avengers “surprising” box office numbers & the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

In anticipation of Quentin Tarantino’s anticipated Django Unchained movie, Samuel L. Jackson discussed his role in the upcoming spaghetti western, among other things, recently with Total Film. And eminently, those other things included Marvel’s The Avengers surprising Box office numbers, his next ‘Nick Fury’ appearances, and his thoughts about an old debate for George Lucas’ Star Wars trilogies, omitting the upcoming Disney-owned installments of course. Check it out below!

After Total Film asked how does he think the second Star Wars trilogy stands up to the first, in which he played Jedi Master Mace Windu, Jackson stated that, “Us older guys who watched Episodes IV, V and VI were kinda too cold, especially for Episode I. Because Episode I was basically a kiddie movie. It’s about this little kid who gets to do all this fantastic shit. Little kids watch that and they’re like ‘Wow, I wish I could do this.’ And they love Jar Jar Binks, who all adults hated. But that’s what George [Lucas] was doing. George knows what George is doing. Everyone else can question it. Or we take possession of things in a certain way and go, ‘I don’t care if the creator is writing it; he has right to write that because he’s letting me down because that’s not the story I wanted him to tell.’ Let him tell the story he wants to tell.”

“I was surprised,” Jackson said of Marvel’s The Avengers box office success. “Nobody expects a movie to become a juggernaut. You expect a certain number of people to go and see it. The Avengers was a [frick]ing juggernaut. It was amazing. All the credit totally goes to Joss [Whedon] because he wrote a movie being a comic-book fan, being a person who understands the genre. He’s the first person to make a comic-book movie right by making sure the comic part was in it. We didn't realize while were standing there doing it that it would be that awesome. I was never there when the Hulk was actually the Hulk, which was a major part of the success of that film. Who knew the Hulk could be that funny?” On the status of Marvel's The Avengers sequel, Jackson could only reiterate that, “It's [definitely] coming. Joss has already been hired to write that. I think my next time as Nick Fury is in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Because I’m not in Iron Man 3. None of the Avengers are in Iron Man 3. It’s a standalone Iron Man movie.” The solo movie for Jackson's S.H.I.E.L.D. Director role was also brought up during the interview, but the actor says that its development is only a rumor, as of now. What do you think?

In addition to “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

I was 8 years old when SW Episode 1 came out and I found it boring. I also hated Jar Jar. That movie was mediocre on every level. It wasn't a success as an adult movie or a kid's movie.

Sam is on the money here! The Avengers was living proof that you don't need to eliminate the more fantastical elements of comics in order to have a successful CBM. It was a huge risk for the movie to fully embrace its comic book roots, but it paid off splendidly! This is why I love Marvel!

I'm betting the next Hulk movie will be in line with Marvel Now! Banner working scientifically for shield while Hulk is a field agent. At least I hope because the indestructible hulk has started out great.

My 8 year old son loves all of the new Star Wars movies, inlcuding the animated movie/series, but his favorite are the new ones, especially the third with Anakin. When I told him that Luke, Leia and Han would be in the new movies, he wasn't that happy bout it and his first question was, "Aren't they too old for Star Wars?"

The Hulk was the best thing in the avengers, Id love another hulk solo movie as I really enjoyed it first viewing.

Yeah, they're pushing quite hard with the "Iron Man 3 will have no Avengers" stuff. Almost like Nolan pushed that with Talia and Robin.

I'm 90% convinced that the chick with the unnamed role is Wasp. The way she threw Tony to that wall was very Janet-ish

I bet they will go back and do a re-shoot to put someone from Avengers in, like they did with Hawkeye in Thor.

I just realized that Samuel L. Jackson acted in three branches of Disney: Pixar, Marvel, and Lucas Films(though it was before Disney bought them).

Should have asked him if Marvel has asked him to appear in the SHIELD TV show, even if it's just for an occasional cameo.

SLJ pretty much hit the nail on the head with everything he said. Children loved the prequel trilogy and grown-ups loved the original trilogy. Shut the f*uck up with all this complaining.

Maybe "children" loved them because they don't know good movies from bad movies. All they see is color and effects.

It is possible to have color and effects PLUS good story/good dialog.

I'm going to be honest I don't want a cameo from any of the Avengers in IM3 I really do want it to be a stand alone film.

What he said about Star Wars is pretty much how most reboots are look at, older people hate them and the younger generation seem to like them or deal with them a little better. Im 24 so I like the old ones and own a lot of them but I don't mind some reboots and understand the reason for them.

Post credit scene will have something or someone interesting show up. Might not be an avenger - might be some new character, hero or villain.

The only thing that would prevent that is if Marvel Studios decide to do things differently for phase two films and drop post credit sequences.

EVEN IF THERES NO AVENGERS CAMEO IM PRETTY SURE THERE WILL BE A GOTG APPEARANCE (MOST LIKELY END CREDITS) SINCE HE'S GOING TO BE APART OF THE TEAM IN THE MARVEL NOW! GOTG SERIES. OH AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT WHEDON GAVE US THE SUPER HERO SQUAD HULK AND YOU GUYS LOVED IT. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG IT WAS FUNNY AND I ENJOYED IT AT THAT MOMENT BUT A WHOLE HULK MOVIE PORTRAYED LIKE THAT WOULD NOT WORK. NO ONE WOULD TAKE THE HULK SERIOUSLY AFTER THAT. NOW TIH WAS SPOT ON IN MY OPINION. MIX A LIL BIT OF WHEDONS HULK WITH TIH AND WE WOULD HAVE THE PERFECT HULK MOVIE (HONESTLY TIH WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME).

I don't think that the PT being "kid's movies" is an excuse. Everyone loved the OT; kids and adults. I think the real kicker is whether or not you saw the OT before you saw the PT.

Episode 1 came out when I was 12. At that point I'd watched the OT so many times our VHS tapes were practically worn out. And the first time I saw Episode 1 I thought it was awesome. Sure Jar Jar was annoying, but the pod-racing and the lightsaber fight at the end were amazing. Then I saw it a second time. The newness factor of actually having a new Star Wars movie had worn off. And that was when I realized just how mind-bogglingly awful that movie was. Even my 12-year old self thought that movie sucked once I got over the shiny new SFX.

So yeah. Sam Jackson seems to know what's what. He just falls into the "Lucas can do what he wants cuz its his franchise" camp. But he defintely hit the nail on the head regarding the Avengers
